centre in Kandy. He selected a land through a local broker in the areaand they bought the land recently in close proximity to Nillambemeditation centre, Kandy. The land is in a small hilltop of an area of18 perches which is originally a part of age old tea plantation. Thesurrounding is quiet unspoiled landscape of tea planation. The sitehas breathtaking panoramic view to the East.

Mr. Marceline Fernando hired an architect to design his house as pertheir requirement for a peaceful living. The client specifically needsa lot of privacy, so client wants a nice house that will match withthe environment that will enhance their living quality. The clientwants four bedrooms, and an open roof terrace. But their main concernis building maintenance, they need their house to be one that is easyto maintain with all necessary facilities.

There is an access road to land. Existing width of the road is 1.2m(5’), need to expand up to 2m and paving with a suitable paving.

The contract includes both building house and the access road.According to the client brief the architect develops a design concept. And he selects some building materials which make the building and itsfinishes easy to maintain and give a good look resembling the cottagearchitecture suitable for upcountry with touch of Kandyan style.

According to the client brief the architect develops a design concept. And he selects some building materials which make the building and itsfinishes easy to maintain and give a good look. At the same time theproject Engineer suggest the client to develop a Rainwater Harvesting(RWH) System to utilize rainwater for extensive gardening andlandscaping to reduce long-term maintenance costs.

Tasks:

1.Identify and describe clearly the planning process of building thehouse and the access road. (Lo 1.1)

2.Briefly explain what are the similarities and differences of thedesign process of this two building works? (Lo 1.2)

3.Describe in detail the main stages of the production (construction)phase of this house. (Lo 1.3)

Note: You can assume & develop a design concept for above house.Based on that concept you can describe the production process.

4.Explain in brief, how do you manage and co-ordinate the design andplanning process of the house to meet above requirements of theclient. (Lo 1.4)

Part 02

Task 05:

If you are the architect, how you interpret the client brief and theother factors that may affect the selection of materials, systems andequipment in different architectural design elements that will enhancethe aesthetics in this project? Give examples and sketches where it isnecessary. (Lo 2.1)

Task 10:

Architect already suggested a Rainwater Harvesting Tank for abovehouse in order to increase the resource efficiency to make this housemore sustainable. Now he wants to pump water from the RWH tank to thefountain of the proposed reflection pond in the South West corner ofthe land. Explain briefly how you integrate this system andrequirements with overall design of this house. Produce flow diagrams, sketches where it is necessary. (Lo 2.2)

Task 11:

For interior floors of the house, the architect suggests: Terra cotta or

Terrazzo

Do a cost study and compare the financial implications of adopting

above finishing materials. Give reasons for your recommendation. (Lo
