POCkET PARkS

Spring 2011thesis semesterProfessor: Lily Chi and Yanni LoukisasSite: New York City

This project is exploring ways for the underutilized rooftops and blank walls in New York City to be used for programs that revitalize the neighborhood and provide recreational space for the residents and visitors of the area. Instead of wiping the existing structures away, like the city proposes, by uti-lizing the potential that rooftops and blank facades offer, a new sys-tem for occupation could be de-veloped that would allow for the simultaneous existence of the new exterior and old interior condition.

RESCUE 2 FIRE HOUSE+

AUTO REPAIR SHOP

Fall 2009 AAP NYC ProgramProfessor: Craig Dykers (Sno-hetta) & Liz BurowSite: Brownsville, NY

This project attempts to rethink the conventions of a traditional fire house by introducing a com-munity service component to the project. A series of programming exercises helped the project devel-oped detailed adjacency diagrams that guided the design process. By adding an auto repair shop, whose facilities could be shared by fire fighters, locals and the general public, the project provides an opportunity for unforced interac-tions between the users.

TIBER ISLAND BRIDGES

Fall 2008 AAP Rome ProgramProfessor: Cibinel, Clemente, Isidori, Locey, Martocchia, SimitchSite: Rome, Italypartner project with Felipe Romero and Giselle Genbow

A two-week design charrette that addresses a contemporary prob-lem of Rome. The project traces the development of streets in the city over centuries and proposes to revitalize their history by intro-ducing a series of bridges over the Tiber that carry the specific char-acteristics of the long-gone street network.

MASTER PLANNING IN ROME

Fall 2008 AAP Rome ProgramProfessor: Cibinel, Clemente, Isidori, Martocchia, SimitchSite: Rome, Italy

Situated in a very difficult neigh-borhood of Rome where the needs of the modern city meet the historic relics, this mixed use project attempts to address many problems on a master planning level. Extensive site analysis and development was involved in the project.

Page 26: Design Portfolio

The water circulation system is con-nected to most other systems includ-ing heating/electricity, plants, etc. The water tubes are capped off by modular nozzles that can be modi-fied depending on the needs at that particular location. The nozzles can range from an open flow to a pressur-ized steam. The functionality ranges from watering the plants, generat-ing weather (i.e. mist), and human programs such as showering

The future of suburbia is the flexibility to go off the utility grid. This wall panel that houses the heating and electrical system is designed for the possibil-ity that in the future energy can be harvested naturally and stored in power cells. Each cellular unit is separate with its internal system that includes a microtubule, mini-thermal genera-tor, water purifier and etc. However, all units would be working in-sync through a wireless network connected to a master computer. The cells can also be integrated and upgraded to the influx technology.

wEATHER GENERATING HOUSE

Fall 2007 Professor: Paul AndersenPartner project with Ziyin Zhou

The agenda of the studio was fo-cused on three research channels: a rigorous development of a per-vasive sensibility, integration of multiple versatile building systems in advanced construction and an alternative suburban agenda based on a study and revision of the New Urbanist Charter.

The plants containers accepts modular cells that has individual plants that one can buy in a mar-ket. Due to the verticality of the wall, the use of hydroponics in a gel form will be used. The plants can be taken out of this modular plant container and changed/stored depending on the home owner’s preference.

Light can come from the outside or it can be interior generated. The tubes have the ability to gener-ate different lighting conditions through the use of LED/ and other types of lighting techniques used in electronics such as television.

The ventilation tubes allow the breathing of the envelope. The tubes are curved to prevent visibility. It is also possible to redirect exterior air to avoid unpleasant conditions such as a street where automobile pollution can contaminate the interior environment.

ALTERNATIvE DENSITIES

Spring 2007 Professor: werner GoehnerSite: Ithaca, NY

Creating a field condition by ag-gregation of the same element and its variations through different connections.

Using the initial design charrette and applying similar aggregation techniques to develop a new ty-pology of housing. The project addresses one of the fundamental problems of the American city-urban sprawl, trying to create an alternative living condition that exists between suburbia and the skyscraper, preserving all of the amenities of suburban living such as car access, outdoor space, pri-vacy, etc.

BUILDING IN THE CREEk

Fall 2006 Professor: John ZissoviciSite: Ithaca, NY

The project assumes that Casca-dilla creek in Ithaca, NY would be dammed to raise the water level and provide for more public access to the water. A small building and a park are also part of the program.

INTERFACE

Fall 2005 Professor: vince Mulcahy

Use of light as an interface be-tween the human body and an object of everyday life. Develop-ing an elaborate skin and skel-eton, driven by the function of the object and inspired by the human body.

Using the same principles and ap-plying them to a swimming pool that exists between the hardness of the cliff and the lightness of the envelope. As the water is falling down the cliff, people are circulat-ing up and they both meet in the middle.

ART IN THE STREETS

Fall 2009AAP NYC ProgramClass: what would Gordon Do? Site: Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten IslandProfessor: Mary woodsPartner project with Mia Ovcina

Through this project we are look-ing to explore how public art (as well as public expression and pro-test) can again become relevant and available to Manhattan as well as how it can reconnect the bor-oughs through public art. Through a series of (Gordon-esque) inter-ventions at different scales, we propose initiatives that could be used to stimulate a new inter-bor-ough discourse which will bring street art back to Manhattan as well as celebrate and recognize it in the outer boroughs.

Fall 2009AAP NYC ProgramPartner project with Mia Ovcina and Ashley Reed

During the fall semester the stu-dents in the AAP center in New York hosted a birthday celebration for the 75th anniversary of Rich-ard Meier, so we had to design the invitation, come up with a set up for the event and decide on the menu.

Spring 2008Professor: Mark Cruvellie Partner project with A.Abrahamian and S. Caracostea
