An eight week design competition, sponsored by Cripe Architects + Engineers used the na-tional Kawneer: Schools of the Future design platform. Propel el-ementary is an environ-mentally responsive and highly integrated school in Northern Seattle, WA. As an extension of Seat-tle’s Lake Union Park, the design influences holistic learning experiences to its community and students. It was inspired greatly by Seattle’s vibrant history, natural spirit and progres-sive goals. The mechani-cal workings of speed boats, float planes and paddle wheel steam boats throughout Lake Union in-fluenced kinetic features and learning stations with-in the school. These fea-tures propel learners with interactive information in an exciting environment.

This was a two month design competition proj-ect sponsored by Gresham Smith and Partners. In a team of two, a health and wellness cen-ter was designed for downtown Indianapolis, IN. Spanning across two triangular sites along main street Massachusetts Avenue, this concept centered around the dilution of energy from the street level in this arts district to the secluded meditative upper levels of retreat and tranquility.

With the program of AISC Steel Design com-petition for a Re-Ligare Institute in reconnect-ing mind and body, the building used a pixilated steel wrap that transformed from an open skin to a shielding layer towards the private sector of the upper floors.

With a seamless transfer from exterior to inte-rior, the building creates a vibrant and enjoy-able atmosphere to be used throughout the year.

The main form of the building was a per-sonal idea while the development of a digital model was my partners. The concept, render-ings, technical drawings and presentation, in-cluding the model, was an entire partnership. skin picelation

MUNCIE SYNERGY BASE.

This short, three week project, was to design an energy center for Muncie, IN. As a team project, my partner and I developed the criteria and program for this project. Designed as community based help and information cen-ter, Muncie Synergy Base focused on the encouragement of environmental awareness and living in the Muncie community. The site acted as a plethora of environmental features for community interaction ranging from neigh-borhood gardens, energy generating playground equipment, bio swales and native plant life learning trails. The layout of the building was kept simple to ensure logical space for community exhibits, meetings, classrooms and environmental business incubation offices.

The technical plans and perspectives were produced by my partner while I executed the hand drawn images. But the concept, development, completion and presentation of the project was truly a shared effort.

This was a brief four week project involv-ing the renovation of an abandoned church into a community arts center. Focusing on essence of the church as a main gathering gallery, the arts center provided a function-al solution to the prosperous neighborhood.

Recently I have participated in an architectural elective focusing on the advancement of Haitian building technologies. A research and develop-ment centered course, the course explored the fundamentals of Haitian construction. I.E. concrete block and the curing process of these blocks. Participating in two separate group competitions, the course examined the modern process of mixing, curing and constructing concrete block and formulating more effective methods of Haitian block form and con-struction. The first competition was to design a new concrete block for the NCAAM Student Desgin Competition. The second competition asked for each group to design ready to assemble kilns for curing concrete block in Haiti sponsored by NCMAF 2010-2011 Student Design competition.

Looking to provide a practical and extremely effective environ-ment for the curing process, my group, as a whole, collaborated to design an all wooden kiln of verticality. Its Mondrian style paint job allowed for an easy color coated assembly for Haitian language while posing as the bright primary colored art to prevalent in the country. Highlighted by the kiln’s economic compactness, the kiln could cure between 4-16 blocks with just a 4.2 sqare foot area. The kiln takes advantage of Haiti’s natural climate to focus on mois-ture capture to create a humid environment for the curing process.

The design process for both the new block competition and the so-lar kiln was a collaborative design effort of every team member. The presentation of the new block was created by another group member. I executed the presentation images for the solar kiln de-sign while the board layout was created by another group member.

This was about a two and a half month project for our building tech class encompassing design, construction, collaboration and some definite time commitment. In groups of three, we were to design an architectural structure filling 80% of the 7’x5’x2.5’ space with planar, void and cut through parameters.

Starting from conceptual sketches into finite construction draw-ings, this project involved an extensive management of time and construction abilities. From the CNC mill to a hand held rotator sander, this project required a well rounded knowledge of con-struction techniques and craft with ambition and precision.

The final product was a development of my own sketch and idea but the construction, refinement and completion was a total team effort. We each took part in the assembly, construction documents and documentation of this exquisite corpse structure that we couldn’t be more proud of.

This project really inspired me to learn and partici-pate in more hands on-design build projects. Start-ing mid-January 2011, I will be participating in a non-traditional studio project named ecoRehab. This amazing organization takes run down houses in foreclosure and performs a complete green reno-vation. As the program is starting in a new location this January, I will be participating in the most crucial and informational phase of rebuilding.
