What is Perennial Wood?

Sustainability

Perennial Wood was developed by Eastman Chemical Company as an alternative to pressure treated wood. Using Trulast Technology, Eastman modified southern pine by permanently opening and expanding its cell structure. This modification allows Perennial Wood to resist warping due to moisture and temperature and even helps prevent it from rotting over time.

Through a collaboration between the design studio at Appalachian State and Eastman Chemical, we were able to explore the properties of Perennial Wood and use our research to develop outdoor furniture prototypes. This offered us a unique experience to participate in one of Eastman’s first consumer product launches, participate in a social media campaign, and attend industry trade shows.

Stains and CoatingsOnce we received our design brief from Eastman, we immediately split into research groups so that we could explore the different properties of the wood. Our group set up a study using standard Perennial Wood and bleached Perennial Wood. This featured a test group and a control group. Each stain was applied to a sectioned board. Following that, each coating was applied to a specific section on each board. The boards were left under UV lamps in a closed environment for 1 month.

As a result, we were able to examine and analyze the interactions between the wood, wood bleach, stains, and individual coatings over time in a very controlled environment.

Product study conducted during an Appalachian State University tailgate on 09/15/12. Participants were surveyed about their cornhole bags.

The survey was conducted on a partly cloudy day at peak tailgating time in the Raley tailgating lot. This lot is primarily students, however some adults were surveyed as well. The greek life and Yosef Club tailgates were not included in this survey. Professional sports fans were also not included in this survey.

Cornhole Product Study

Page 16: Design Portfolio 2012

After analyzing different tailgating product opportunites, I decided to move forward with the cornhole slip covers. This decision was based on my manufacturing limits and the potential customization factor.

Concept Development

In order to beat out the competition, the product must hit local markets very quickly and at the lowest reasonable price. Using team logos in-creases the value of the product, and would be most effectivee as an impulse buy.

Project BriefThis project began in the fall of 2011 as my first studio project. The project was centered around “Back to School” product applications.

Page 21: Design Portfolio 2012

How can you take advantage of the product’s environment to enhance it’s use?

Page 22: Design Portfolio 2012

The hanging dryer is designed to effectively dry a variety of garnments. It’s hanging position helps students maintain their limited floor space while still meeting their drying needs.

Page 23: Design Portfolio 2012

Independent Refinement - Spring 2012The new design is aimed more at portability and functionality. More thought was applied to the internal components as well as the portability and functionality of the dryer. Satisfied with the functioning elements, I will continue to re-visit the form of the design in the future to appeal more to student athletes. The project will be revised again in a Design for Manufacturing class.

What are we really breathing?

Page 26: Design Portfolio 2012

MISUTO AIR PURIFIER

You breathe 35 lbs of air each day.

90% of your time = indoors.

Take a deep breath...

Asthma = 18 billion dollars a year.

The Misuto Air Purifier was designed to meet the needs of the rising costs of asthma and other respiratory problems. People spend a significant time indoors, where the air is becoming increasingly contaminated. This poses a serious health risk to weakening respiratory systems.

This project was originally designed for a housewares design competition in the fall of 2011. There was emphasis placed on keeping mechanical components and their housing in mind. Also, the product was required to “stand-alone”; it could not be an installation.

TORQUE

Type II diabetes has been known as primarily an adult disease for the past 30 years. As obesity spreads throughout America, the number of reported cases has also increased. More importantly, that “adult” disease has now begun to affect obese children, shortening their lives by 8 to 12 years.

Obesity is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease and Americans spend nearly 190 million dollars annually due to obesity. This is proving to be just as much of an economic problem for Americans as it is a health problem.

Obesity in America

Children Gain Fat CellsWhen children gain weight, they develop more fat cells. When adults gain weight, their fat cells just get larger. By preventing children from developing an excessive amount of fat cells, we can help prevent adult obesity as well. 17%

Parental Statistics

In a world where kids become more and more digitally connected every year, it becomes a challenge to get them away from the screens and onto the field. The average child spends 6 hours a day looking at a screen, whether it be watching the TV, surfing the web, or playing games on a tablet.

As these children grow and develop into adults, it becomes increasingly harder to break these sedentary habits. Nearly 80% of adults hold sedentary jobs and as a result are more tired when they get home.

Gaming affects both children and adults. Over 50% of adults now own smart phones and play mobile games. The average age of the console gamer is 34.

Changing the idea of gaming is one small step towards changing the sedentary lifestyle.

Since our income comes from advertising revenue, this presents an initial start up cost problem. We plan to take a loan and build up and large product launch so that we can hit the advertising revenue immediately. Our goal is to eventually generate enough revenue through advertising so that we can subsidize the cost of the tracker to the customer. We’re trying to improve lives, not make a profit.

Coming Soon... PROJECT IN PROGRESS

We are currently integrating the brand concept into the design of the tracker. The CADD model and website are currently under development. Several key features of the tracker will include USB connectivity, rotational toggle switches, and an adjustable wristband.

To further establish our brand, we will explore color options for the tracker as well.
