BEN WORTLEYDESIGN FOR INDUSTRY PORTFOLIO
MeMe.Hello, my name is Ben Wortley and I am a third year undergraduate student at Northumbria University, studying Design for Industry.
I am constantly developing skills, using fresh ideas to innovate and redesign current products and solve issues. This approach allows me to push creative boundaries, explore new depths and gain a better understanding of how my product will impact on the end user.
I have completed two placements within the industry giving me the confi dence to put forward and try new ideas, allowing me to play a key role within a team.
The work you will see describes me as a designer and gives you an insight in to some of the projects I have worked on, which refl ect the designer that I am growing in to.

I fi rst started using Fab Lab Airedale in 2012 through a summer course titled “Dragons Den”. From here it led me to a one yearplacement. This gave me experience onnumerous CAD machines, alongside working on live projects with members of the public and clients such as Leeds City College.
Dragons Den Design Brief - To design furniture which doesn’t need glue or fi xings to construct.
In a group of three we sketched, modelled, designed, and 3D cut the “Kids Car Sofa” , including making cushions, a 3D handle and business plans. Reusing materials where possible, followed by a pitch of our fi nal outcome which we won and ended up in the local news for our success.
PLACEMENT01
About my placement
In March 2016 I started a 20 week placement at Tjarks and Tjarks in London, where I learnt skills on Adobe software allowing me to produce high standard work in a fast paced environment.
Through brand guidelines and similar techniques on each packaging project, I was able to apply the same routine multiple times allowing me to understand how packaging designers work.
Due to confi dentiality reasons I am unable to show this work. To see similar work please view - http://www.tjarksandtjarks.com
If you would like an employment reference regarding my placement here than please contact the company.

AL FRESCOFood on the go
I decided to redesign sandwich packaging for Marks and Spencer.
02
INSIGHTS
Existing packaging which offers no other perk but to hold a sandwich.
People need a better way to enjoy a sandwich with a ritual embedded within.
DEVELOPMENT
Adding the feature of the box changing to a plate when opened allowing the ritual of eating from a plate to happen
on the go.
Starting with rough sketch models adding new features and applying patterns to get to the end product I wanted.
I chose this size as the front fl ap is the same size as current packs
and the plate is in perspective with this, allowing my packaging to be assembled and dismantled
easily.
I chose blue and white china as my design, this appeals to the audience better and helps my
packaging stand out.
THE GRAPHICS
PRODUCT IN USE
“Eye catching design on the shelf” “Find somewhere to sit, out of the work place” “Tear off the lid”
“Pull down the side fl aps to open the plate” “Add crisps, relax and enjoy being outside” “Recycle”
GROWChildren grow up fast and need furniture which can grow with them.
I have decided to design a chair for a 7 year old, which will double up as a school desk when they get older.
03
DEVELOPMENTSketching and Prototyping.
GROWHow did I nd this project.
I enjoyed making this, however I found it hard to get the correct anthropometrics. Research and development allowed me to make a dual purposed chair/school desk.
POP - UPTo produce an interactive and fun instruction manual for a kitchen appliance.
Paper engineering 2D forms into 3D forms through cleverly folding and introducing diff erent paper mechanisms.

Open book, pull the coffee cup from behind the tree. Turn until the lid is removed and pour water.
Twist handle tight and pull on tab to release coffee.Scoop coffee and press.
NON LITERALElectronic Device
To model an electronic device with a non literal exterior, yet still be attractive and engaging with the end user.
