Let’s know more…• Moisture: Present in the air in the form of Vapors (Gas Phase) having more
penetrative & damaging ability than liquid form.We measure moisture in % RH w.r.t. Temperature and is dynamic
through out the year. Also the moisture in compressed air flow is measured as dew point.Affects integrity of packaging materials, packaged products, bacterial
growth, bad odour etc…
• Oxygen: Air contains about 20-21% OxygenOxygen can create havoc in presence of Moisture on variety of
materials including foods, foodgrains.Rust formation is very common occurrence on metals and is due to
Oxidation!Other effects are formation on mold, mildew, bacteria, toxins, color
The quality of dry drugs, dry food, hard candy and other hygroscopic materials can only be maintained if it is kept in contact with air at a low relative humidity. Most hygroscopic materials are "comfortable" at a relative humidity below 50%RH. There are some materials, for example instant powder for drinks, that require 15%RH.
• MOULDMould and fungus formation is prevented if the surrounding air is
kept below 60%RH.
BACTERIABacteria need humidity to survive and multiply. Often these conditions are found on hygroscopic material. If the surrounding air relative humidity is held below 50%RH most bacteria will not find a suitable environment to multiply.
Using an appropriate desiccant in appropriate quantity, which will adsorb water vapors/ gas/ odour & maintain low RH inside the packaged environment through out the specified shelf-life.
Any other solutions?Moisture Barrier Bags, Vacuum Packing,
MAP (N2 Purging) in addition to Desiccants & Oxygen Absorbers
Which solution is better?• Desiccants & O-Busters are economical yet more effective.• Work by removing (adsorption) available Moisture & Oxygen in
packaged/sealed environment. Have very high affinity for moisture & Oxygen.
• VCI: Vapour Corrosion Inhibitors emmit vapours & form a thin coating on surfaces thus not allowing the moisture to deposit on it. The problem is, the vapours do not reach out to remote corners or surfaces.
• In any case the Desiccants or VCI work only in packaged environment inside hermetically sealed Moisture Barrier Bags.
• Moisture Barrier Bags: Bags with very Low MVTR & OXTR (Moisture Vapour Transmission Rates ). These bags have capability to prevent outside moisture/oxygen to penetrate inside.
• MAP & Vacuum Packing: Reduces/removes air inside packaged goods.
Solution to Moisture & Oxygen menace in the form of…
• Desiccants & O-Busters:
Used for protection of packaged goods from attack of Moisture/Odour or Gas & to prevent formation of Mold, Mildew, Bacteria, Insects, Toxins, Color change, Taste change, Corrosion or Rusting (Oxidation).
• Humidity Indicating Cards:
A low cost method of indicating humidity conditions inside various types of barrier packaging.
Desiccants in Packaging ApplicationsPackets/Pouches/Bags
• Major Desiccant Types:
• Clay: Clay is natural/non-hazardous/inexpensive/highly effective adsorbent within normal temp. & RH changes. However has tendency to release moisture back on saturation
• Silica Gel: Form of silica manufactured from Sod. Silicate and acid. Non hazardous, porous molecular structure that closely resembles a sponge, with very high capacity (40% of its own weight at 100% RH) for moisture adsorption. Indicating/Non indicating type.
• Molecular Sieves: Synthetic crystalline version of Zeolite containing a network of uniform pores and empty cavities. Is derived from Na, K or Ca Alumina Silicate (Al2O3.SiO2). MS is the most aggressive and expensive of the primary desiccants.
FACTORS FOR THE CONSIDERATION IN CALCULATING MOISTURE ATTACK
• Container Size / Box Size / Packing dimensions should be known.
• Thickness for the packing material . MVTR should be known.• Free space / void / head space should be known.• Outer wrapping thickness during shipment should be known.• Shelf life of the product.• Moisture content should be calculated with respect to weight of
the product.• Transition time & route should be known.• Packing environmental conditions should be recorded.
• Packaging experts face a confusing array of variables when selecting moisture adsorbents partly because moisture control is a multifaceted challenge. There are four sources of water contamination in a closed container or package:
• Water vapor in the air inside the package• Water vapor adsorbed by the materials inside
the package• Water vapor on the walls of the package• Permeation of water vapor into the package.

Types of protections
• The protection to be provided depends on vulnerability of product & packaging, the markets to be served & value of products.
• eg: A VVIP is provided with Z or Z plus security compared to an MLA or Corporator
• Desiccants provide low cost insurance/security to your products!
There can be three tiers of protections:
• Single Tier: Desiccant is placed in direct contact with goods to be protected inside primary packing having sufficient barrier packaging.
• Two Tier: Desiccant is placed inside primary as well as secondary Packing (usually Corrugated boxes further with stretch wrapping)
• Three Tier: Inside the shipping containers 20” or 40” for the exports through sea route
• In the third layer protection ‘Cargo Dry Paks’ are used to prevent ‘Container Rain’ & keep the containers in dry condition.

Quality Parameters-Desiccants• Should have very high adsorption capacity• Should have low residual moisture (LOD)• The desiccant material should have neutral pH (6.5-7.5), inert
& non-toxic in nature• Should be packed in non-dusting, non-tearable, non-lintable
packing materials preferably spun-bonded olefins• The packet material should not have wetting effect on surface
upon saturation• Should be confirming to International standards CFR/EU
compliant, MIL-D specs, JDEC-033, FDA etc…• Should be active (RTU) when using,• The packet material should be permeable to moisture• Desiccant must have moisture holding capacity at higher
temperatures below evaporation point of water• Desiccant should not release water upon saturation

Do & Don'ts-Desiccants
Do’s:• Always use desiccants when you are ready to pack your goods &
seal immediately• Place the desiccants at different locations inside the package & near
the possible sources of air permeation• Store in the original container away from darkness• Look at the HIC placed inside the desiccant container before using
Do not’s:• Expose the desiccants unnecessarily• Remove the HIC card from the original container• Use over-exposed desiccant pouches• Punch holes in the desiccant packets
