General Notes: Dr. Phillips remembered as a boy when Wilson's Raiders come to hisfamily's farm in 1864. They stole meat from the smokehouse, threw all the clothes onthe floor and poured sorgam syrup over them. The negro servant had hidden thehorses in the canebreak by the river. He had tied them so tight that all but two broketheir necks struggling against the ropes. He also remembered they wove their ownlinsey-woolsey cloth during the war, and what a treat it was to dress up in his linsey-woolsey suit to go with the negro servant to Warrior to sell the cotton. [CatharinePhillips Hager, daughter] As none of the census takers from 1830 to 1860 recordedany slaves for any of the Phillips's, I think the inclusion of slaves in this story is a littlesuspect. community that in the early 1940's when Mrs. Phillips wanted to go shopping inBirmingham she would call the bus company, and they would reroute a bus by herhouse to pick her up. [Katherine Southard] Granddaughter Jane remembers walkingfrom Granny's house to the train tracks where the train would stop and pick them up. Granny Phillips had chickens and a strawberry patch at her house in Dora. There wasalso a china berry tree, and when the berries fell off they turned your feet purple whenyou walked barefoot in the yard. When she was 5 or 6 years old, granddaughter Janeremembers Granny had a field of cotton that Jane and Sara helped pick. It was highcotton, not the lower growing cotton that is grown today. Sara's hair got all full ofcockle burrs while they were picking cotton. Jane remembers churning butter on theback porch. Granny had two stoves, a giant wood-burning stove that she used inwinter because it helped heat the house, and an electric stove. After Dr. Phillips died in1935, Granny rented out the back bedrooms to school teachers. Jane remembers thatGranny had a beautiful set of painted furniture in the front bedroom. She had a bed, dresser, and dressing table painted pale green with flowers. Margaret was a quilter, and four of her quilts still exist. the treatment prescribed by his father and other doctors, including his uncle Dr.L.L. Terry. He had attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). Hehad been a bookkeeper for the Chevrolet people, and then was a bookkeeper atDora Motor Company, which Dr. Phillips had a half interest in. About 1928, A. B. became moody and depressed. He lost interest in his workand became careless in his dress. He had obsessed ideas and hallucinations, andonce or twice threatened suicide. He was suspicious, and thought his father andmother were taking his mind away. He became untruthful, and at times vulgarand profane. He was in the hospital for three weeks where his mental conditiongreatly improved, but on returning home, refused treatment. In August 1928 hewas then confined to Hill Crest Sanitarium in Birmingham. In October 1928, A.B.'s condition was taken before the court and he wascommitted to the state hospital, Bryce in Tuscaloosa. He was brought to thehospital by his cousins Joe Phillips and W. W. Phillips, most likely JosephPhillips and William Jefferson Phillips, the sons of Jefferson Lawrence Phillips, brother to Martin Marion Phillips, Dr. A. B. Phillips' father. The doctors at Bryce diagnosed A.B. as having Dementia Praecox - HebephrenicType. This was later updated to more current terminology of SchizophrenicReaction, Hebephrenic Type. According to the correspondence in the BryceHospital records, A.B.'s doctors at Bryce did treat him for syphilis using theavailable treatment of Salvarsan, since this was before penicillin was available, but they did not think his syphilis was the cause of his mental illness.Hebephrenic schizophrenia is today defined as a form of schizophreniacharacterized by severe disintegration of personality including erratic speech andchildish mannerisms and bizarre behavior. It usually becomes evident duringpuberty, and is the most common diagnostic category in mental institutions. A.B. spent the remainder of his life at Bryce Hospital. He was described in themedical records as being delusional, suffering hallucinations, being silly at times, laughing for no apparent reason. He apparently suffered a cerebral thrombosis inJanuary 1970, and passed away March 11, 1970. The correspondence in the Bryce Hospital file included letters from A.B.'sparents to his doctor. Often they were sending money and/or requesting a specialmeal for him. In February 1931, Dr. Phillips wrote to Dr. Partlow - "How is myboy A. B. Phillips Jr?". Just those few words seemed to express how heart-rending A.B.'s illness was for the family. Upon the death of his parents, Henry Hager, A.B.'s brother-in-law, became hisguardian. Jane Hager Reuther remembers that sometime after A.B.'s funeral, CatharinePhillips Hager told her that the woman who had been A.B.'s girlfriend or fianceewhen he was committed to Bryce had come to the funeral. General Notes: Henry was named for his uncle, Henry Jordan, his father Charles'sister Annie's husband. When he was younger, Henry was known as Hank. As an adult most peoplecalled him Henry, but old friends still called him Hank. [3] Henry attended 2nd and 3rd grades (1915-1916) at Ira Street School in Atlanta,Georgia, while living with his Aunt Annie Hager Jordan and Uncle Henry Jordan.Uncle Henry signed his report cards. Henry attended the second grade for the first3 quarters, and was then promoted to the 3rd grade by examination (Apr 3 1916)and attended the 4th quarter of the 3rd grade. [report cards] When he was young, Henry hoboed on a train from West Virginia to Atlanta, andcame down with appendicitis on the way and almost died. His Aunt Annie Jordanlived in Atlanta, and took him to the doctor. [3] In the 1930 Census, Henry Hager was living in Birmingham, Alabama, onHighland Avenue. He was 23 years old and an engineer, working in themechanical industry. His roommate, or lodger on the census, was D. A. York (?),36 years old and a physician. In addition to his B.S. degree in Mining Engineering from the University ofAlabama, Henry also received a Masters from the University on a researchscholarship with the US Bureau of Mines. [4] The Mine Foreman Certificate of Competency that Henry received in 1939 isrequired in order to be an underground mine foreman in the coal industry.Underground mining is quite hazardous. [4] Daughter Sara and son-in-law Tom Moxley struck up a conversation with a manthey met while out to dinner in Birmingham. The man happened to have workedin coal mining. Sara said her father was Henry Hager. The man said that he hadbeen a negotiator for the union and Henry was the fairest man he ever dealt with.[1] Henry was instrumental in getting the Negro high school built in Walker orJefferson county. They wanted to hang his picture in the high school. Henry didnot want it there as he did not want everyone to know all he did to help otherpeople. [2] When I was about 5 or 6, I remember Granddaddy telling this story: Once upon atime there was a band of robbers sitting around the campfire. The leader said,"Pedro, tell us a story." And Pedro said . . . Once upon a time there was a band ofrobbers sitting around the campfire. The leader said, "Pedro, tell us a story." AndPedro said . . . Once upon a time there was a band of robbers sitting around thecampfire. The leader said, "Pedro, tell us a story." And Pedro said . . . . And onand on the story would go until he couldn't repeat it any more times, or you werelaughing so hard he couldn't continue. [CAR] Grandmother and Granddaddy would occasionally drive up to Huntsville fromBirmingham. Granddaddy would come in, say Hello, have a drink of whiskey, andstand around jingling the change and keys in his pockets. He had come, said hello, and now it was time to go. Grandmother, of course, needed to sit and visit for awhile. [CAR] Henry had scars on his lungs, probably from childhood T. B. (tuberculosis). Hereceived further scarring on his lungs in the winter of 1936 from severepneumonia. He smoked most of his life, usually in secret. [5] He died November4, 1985, from complications after lung surgery. After surgery to remove part ofhis lung, a clot formed and/or broke loose and traveled to his lungs causing themto fill with fluid as if he had pneumonia. This was his second surgery to removepart of his lung. The first surgery was several years prior to the second. General Notes: Born one month premature at 7:05 PM, weighed 4 pounds,13 3/4 ounces, at Bridgeport Hospital [Lydia Speiser Reuther's notebook]. During college (Auburn, AL), Cal owned and flew his own airplane, anErcoupe. In 1951 or 1952, Cal flew to Connecticut from Auburn through bad weatherwith no radio and was the only plane flying over NY. Coming back to toAuburn, he developed trouble in Maryland (?). He was able to land butcould not afford to fix the plane, and left it at the airport. [Jane Reuther] During college at API Cal worked for Mr. Fortner at Jake's Joint and theElk's Club. He met Jane at Jake's Joint. Mrs. Fortner gave Cal her recipe forBarbecue Sauce and Barbecue Basting Sauce that he used throughout his lifeto make fantastic barbecue chicken on the grill. Cal graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (API - later re-namedAuburn University) in Auburn, Alabama, in 1953, with a Bachelors ofScience degree in Electrical Engineering. His first job was across the countryfor Boeing in Seattle, Washington, working on the B-52 airplane. He leftBoeing in 1956 for Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, PA, but was on his wayback to Boeing and Seattle in 1958 when Jane was pregnant with Cathy. Eglin AFB. In 1963, Cal, Jane, Cathy and Russell moved to California where Calworked on the Minuteman weapon system. In April 1965, Cal, Jane and the children moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where Cal continued his work for Boeing, this time on the space program. He was responsible for the Boeing Saturn V Logistics Support Staff, developing a Logistics Support Plan. He was also responsible for Saturn VLogistics activities and program schedule. In 1967 he assumed responsibilityfor directing the preparation of the Saturn V Flight Manual, a single sourcereference prepared specifically for the astronauts' use. When Boeing reduced their operations in Huntsville in 1974 (the summerPresident Richard Nixon resigned and the fall Cathy got her driver'slicense), Cal and Jane decided to stay in Huntsville rather than be transferredto another city, and Cal went to work for Sperry Corporation on tacticalmissile systems at MICOM. In 1980 he began a brief stint at GuestAssociates providing marketing and technical representation for technicallyoriented customers, as well as consultation to small business through theSmall Business Administration. In 1982, Cal went back to work for Boeing on marketing managementassignments for the Air Force, MSFC, MICOM, and SSDC customers. Heretired early in 1993 after Jane's brain aneurysms and surgery that year. Early in their marriage, when they were young and poor, Cal decided to startmaking furniture instead of buying it. He bought the appropriate tools and setup shop in the spare bedroom in their apartment. The first thing he madewas a long low bench in the Danish Modern style. He made their bedroomfurniture and later on a hi-fi cabinet, kitchen table, and a new dresser forJane in the 1970's. In 1983, when his mother Lydia was no longer making the family Christmascookies, Cal took up the task, often with daughter Cathy's help. He madetheir favorites Springerli, Brownie Lebkuchen & Schwaben Brodli, and newones as well. Just as Lydia did, he kept track of what he made and howmany. In 2002, Cathy took up the tradition on her own. Cal also had avegetable garden for many years, and took up canning at that time. Not onlydid he can vegetables, but he also made jellies and pickles. In 1988 & 1989, Cal and Jane built a new, larger house on Mountain SpringsCircle in Huntsville and moved in in April 1989. The house included a 3-cargarage with large shop attached, and Jane's large weaving room over thegarage and shop. After Cal's death, the house was sold to Hank and KathyPerkins, friends from church, and a school friend (Hank) of daughterCathy's when growing up. Cal entered Huntsville Hospital November 25, 1999 (Thanksgiving Day) forheart bypass surgery on November 26. The surgery was successful, but

numerous complications ensued due to Cal's emphysema and the steroids hehad been taking for the emphysema that interfered with the healing process. After seven weeks in ICU, he passed away due to multiple organ systemfailure on January 14, 2000, at 5:05 PM. Daughter Cathy, son Russell, future son-in-law Bryan Kennedy, and Dr. T. Benton Washburn werepresent. He was buried January 18, 2000 at Maple Hill Cemetery inHuntsville. Unknown to his family until after he entered the hospital, Cal had beenhaving heart problems for some time. Nitroglycerin pills were found in hisstudy for heart pain.
