The story …

� Prince Edward Island, Canada was named for Victoria’s father; Prince Edward – son of George III and brother of George IV and William IV

• Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent and Strathearn (2 November 1767 – 23 January 1820)

• Edward was stationed in Quebec & Nova Scotia from 1791 to 1799

• The legislature of St. John’s Island voted to change its name to Prince Edward Island in honour of Prince Edward on November 29, 1798.

• He died of pneumonia 6 days before his father, George III

� It was seemingly by accident that Victoria came to the throne

� Of the sons of George III, Edward had the eldest legitimate heir

� Edward died the year after Victoria was born. Her mother had 2 older children by a previous marriage
