James brought 400 acres of land from Anne Mayo in Cumberland Co., VA. Anne was the very land wealthywidow of Joseph Mayo, and these 400 acres were part of a 4,740 acre patent that Joseph Mayo had received inAugust of 1740. James paid Anne twenty-four pounds for the land. The land had a small creek running throughit known as Soke Arse Creek or Run. One can only imagine how the creek received it's name but sometime inthe early part of the 1800;s the creek was renamed Bonbrooke as it remains today. It is impossible to know howJames' land looked in 1750 as today it is included in state forest land and is used for planting and cutting of pulp.Some of the types of trees listed in the Mayo-Andersons deed include gum, pine, white oak and Spanish oak.

Records on James and Margaret after 1750 are sparse. Records have been found that does show that James andMargaret were still in Cumberland, VA in 1761-62. At that time the couple were suing Moses Smith for talkingindecently to Margaret. A suit was filed in Cumberland, VA for a "plea of trespass case … damage one hundredpounds," and continued until May of 1762 when the case was dismissed, James and Margaret failing toprosecute. Then in 1766, from the records, it would appear that James was in debt to George Kippen and JamesLyle for fifteen pounds, two shillings and six pence. According to the records James absconded fromCumberland, VA and an inventory was made of all the items he had left behind in order to satisfy his debt.Where he and Margaret and their young family went has not been discovered.

William Anderson was a tailor by trade. Nothing is known of his early years except that somewhere and fromsomeone he learned the tailoring trade. The earliest record thus far found for him was in 1769 and identifies himas a tailor. William was probably identified as a tailor in the Cumberland records because another William alsolived at that time in Cumberland and this was a means of keeping the two men apart.

William made a few additonal purchases of land to go with his share of his father's estate, but never was a largeland owner. He apparently kept is family by his tailoring trade, although his sons probably did work the land.One of the last records found for William while he was alive is recorded in Spotsylvania County. In Septemberof 1794 he purchased a negro woman named Bess from his father-in-law. John Shirley was to have full use ofthe woman until his death and then she was to go to William or his heirs. Family tradition lists fourteen childrenfor William and Catherine, however proof for only eleven has been found. William taught at least two of hissons the art involved in tailoring. He may have taught other young men as well as several of his brothersdescendants were also tailors. Of his sons, it is known that James and William were tailors. Most of the othersix boys became farmers when they were grown, and one in later years became a preacher.

It is not known if any of the Anderson children received a formal education.The records of Cumberland do nottell if there was a school where the children could attend. It is known however, that they could all read and writebecause of later records found.Perhaps Catherine and William served as school teachers to their young brew.

One wonders what the cause of William's death might have been. He was under fifty ys. of age at his death in1795. Many illnesses were common place in the late 1700's however, and because of it few people lived intotheir sixties and seventies. Whatever the cause of death, William died in Cumberland between May 17 and June22.

Catherine continued to live on the homeplace and raise her family. At William's death at least four of hischildren were young enough that they required a guardian. Their older brother John played this role until at least1805 when their mother became their guardian. John also became executor of his father's estate as William haddied interstate.

My third Great Grandfather, Thomas Anderson, left Cumberland County in 1806 and headed west. He travelledwith two brother, Garland and Joel.The three Anderson boys had been born and raised in Cumberland, VA.They left behind several brothers and sisters and their mother Catherine Shirley Anderson. Their father, WilliamAnderson, had died in Cumberland, VA in 1795. William had been a tailor by trade and lived on land inCumberland, VA he had inherited from his father James Anderson. Beside William lived his two brotherLawrence and George and their families. Also, living in Cumberland were three other brothers of William -Richard, John and Jesse.

When it came time for William to marry, he picked a girl from Spotsylvania County, VA. Catherine was thedaughter of John and Elizabeth Shirley and was probably one of the oldest children of her parents. She andWilliam were married about 1770. William and Catherine, by family tradition, had fourteen children; however,records have been found for only eleven: Elizabeth, who married Jacky Tally and had many descendants, livedfor many years in Cumberland, VA. John married Frances Anderson, his first cousin, and had manydescendants. Joel, Thomas and Garland moved to middle Tennessee. Thomas and Garland married sister, Judithand Sarah Robinson, daughters of Edward and Anna Meador Robinson of Cumberland, VA who moved withtheir daughters and sons-in-laws to Tennessee.

William was a tailor as was his father. He married and lived in Cartersville, Cumberland County, VA, until hisdeath about 1822. He had one son and three daughters. Sarah married Gross Robinson in 1809 and lived inCumberland, VA until her husband's death. Then she and her many children moved to middle Tennessee near

her brothers.

Caleb married his first cousin Rebecca Anderson and lived in Cumberland, VA. He had no children and died inCumberland, VA in 1847.Frances married James Meador and had children. Little is known of Frances after her marriage, however.Shirley married twice, first to his cousin Elizabeth Anderson and then to Mary Oslin. He had one son, Willis,whose descendants stilllive in Cumberland,VA.

James died as a young man in CaIra, Cumberland, VA. He too was a tailor, and when he died he had no wife orchildren. Children also recorded for William and Catherine for which no records have been found are Paul,Nancy, and Patsey.

The Anderson brothers produced a bountiful clan in the early years of Cumberland County. William, George,and Lawrence lived on Soke Arse Creek, which was later renamed Bonbrook Creek. Richard lived near by andJohn and Jesse lived lower in the county near the present Brown's Church. Their children married into many ofthe families of Cumberland including Meadors, Robinsons, Talleys, Oslins, Osbornes, Jenkins, Blantons andTrents.

Notes for CATHERINE SHIRLEY:In March of 1830 Catherine wrote her will and left two thirds of her estate to son Shirley and the balance to sonCaleb. By this time Catherine was near 80 years old, but she was to live another three years before her death. Maybe because he died early, but he seemed to be thepoorest of the brothers. He probably lived on the 400 acres until his own marriage but never owned any of it,although his own land was very close to his older brothers.

Notes for LAWRENCE ANDERSON:Lawrence was probably the oldest of the Anderson brothers because he appears to have received the biggestshare of the 400 acres. It would appear that when he wrote his will in February of 1781 he was "sound of bodyand mind" yet three months later in May he was dead, probably about 35 years old. From the tone of the will Iwould suspect he either went off to war, knew someone was gunning for him, or there was a sickness about andhe was afraid he might catch it. Anyway, apparentlywhen he wrote his will he was fearful for his life. Rhondahis wife never married but raised her children and did some fine property wheeling and dealing. She was able ather own death in 1833 to leave her children not only their share of their grandfather's estate, but some otherprime land.Her daughter Nancy never married; Fanny married her cousin John Anderson, son of William andCatherine(Shirley) Anderson, and Lawrence died shortly after his mother.

George had at his deathan estate worth over $2,700 which included 8 slaves but most of them were children. Thomas became a very wealthy farmer forhis day because he gave at least three of his sons and one of his sons-in-law enough money to purchase land inthe Silver Point area. And at his death he had between 259 and 300 acres of land along with 12 negroes.

Notes for REBECCA PERANNAH BARTLETT:During the Civil War, two men were passing through Buffalo Valley, Putnam County, Tennessee on their way toWhite County, for their families. They were going to move them to Kentucky where they had made new homes.Somewhere in the valley, they were shot and seriously wounded by two Rebel soldiers. The injured men weretaken to the home of some people named Garner.

Annie Anderson Bartlett, my grandmother, heard of this and sent my mother (Rebecca Peranna Bartlett), whowas about 15 years old at the time, to see if there was anything that they could do for the injured men.

The Garners lived near Thomas Anderson, Jr. and they didn't have bedsteads, just straw beds on the floor. Theinjured men, later identified as being named Dildine and Barclay, had been placed on two of these rough beds.As my mother entered the room, Mr. Dildine looked up and asked her for a drink of cold water. She started tothe spring with a wooden bucket and a gourd dipper when the Garners told her that the Rebels had ordered themnot to wait on the injured men and that any one that did would be killed. Mother hurried on and said, "Let 'emkill!"

She brought the water and gave Mr. Barclay a drink and he asked her to pour cold water on him as he was hotwith the fever. Mr. Dildine had been shot in the head and by that time, was unable to talk. He died later on thatfirst night. Mother stayed the whole night pouring cold water on Mr. Barclay. The wooden floors were old, sothe water soaked right through the straw bed and went right through the floor.

The next day Mr. Barclay asked mother to write a letter to his wife. Mother wrote the letter and Mr. Barclaydied that night.

About three weeks later, Mrs. Barclay came horseback with her six-month-old son to meet the people who hadbefriended her husband in his hour of greatest need. She was very thankful for all kindness shown her husbandand told my grandmother that she would send the family a half uh-bushel of salt if they would let Rebecca gowith her to bring it back. A horse was saddled for Rebecca, and she left on her long trip to get the salt. They hadgotten about as far as Silver Point (about five miles), when Becky lost her courage and began crying. She justcould not bear to think of going so far from home. She turned her horse home, the much needed salt wasforgotten.

Forty years later, the fears and hates of the war forgotten, Mr. Barclay's son camw to Buffalo Valley to find hisfather's grave. He wished to remove the bones and lay them at rest beside his mother. Riley Jones, my brother,told of hearing mother tell the story of Mr. Barclay's death and that she might know where Mr. Barclay had beenburied. She knew the cemetery, but not the exact grave as there were few tombstones.

That cemetery is now under the mightily Interstate Highway which dissected the valley. That cemetery, with allits occupants, except Thomas Anderson Jr. and Louisa Anderson, whose remains were removed before the roadcovered the cemetery.

Story of Lewis Monroe Anderson (1867 - 1935)by his grandsons, Louis Gill & Lamar Medley

Louis Gill gives this story: "In the 1880's men would cut timber and snake the logs down to a stream, float themdown to a certain spot and lash them together into a raft. Then they would ride the raft down the CumberlandRiver to the saw mill at Nashville. Louis Anderson was doing this one winter when he was a young man. Theraft broke up and threw him into the river. After this he got rheumatism so bad that he wasn't able to do muchphysical labor thereafter. Some people thought he was lazy. He was about 6'4" tall, and he became very heavyin his later life. Also, he was very well liked."

Lamar Medley, describes him in the following manner:

"It would seem he had the right of leadership and executive ability, for I never saw him when he wasn't dressedup, white shirt, tie, etc.

The only manual work he ever did was robbing bees, a task he seemed to relish. He knew how to direct labor,which always seemed more appealing than doing it himself. He thereby had an excellent farm, well run andmaintained with very little turnover in his labor force. His tenants liked to work for him. He subscribed to thenewspapers that were available to him, the Nashville as well as the local ones, and read them with great interest.He could relate what he read in an interesting manner, and was a good story teller. This was one reason he wasable to keep his help.

At the end of the days work, when the hands brought the teams and the tools back to the barn, Grandpa alwaysgreeted them cheerfully and would have them visit a while at the barn or on the porch. He would tell them thenews and they were always keenly interested in hearing him.

Virgil and Audra got married on a Wednesday evening in the back seat of Virgil Timothy Denny's model T car.

The cause of his death was died by self inflicted shotgun wound; he had stomach cancer.

Virgil had one of biggest self producing farms in the area. It was located near Buffalo Valley, at Silver Point,Putnam Co., TN. Near him lived his distant cousins, the family of Wesley Carr. This family was the backboneof the Virgil Timothy Denny farm and tended to the needs of the Denny family and farm for years. Oak Ridge, Tenn.-Lamar Medley a Putnam County native and a veteran of 35 years with the FederalGovernment, is retiring from his position here with the Energy Research and Development Administration's OakRidge Operations.

For the past 15 years Medley has been engaged in the execution and administration of ERDA's contracts withsoutheastern-area universities, colleges, industrial and commercial firms for the conduct of research, educationand training program related to the energy research and development efforts of ERDA.

Mr. Medley's sister is Louise Medley who lives on Walnut Street, Cookeville,TN.

He has been a member of the Contract Division of ERDA's Oak Ridge Operations since 1972 and before thatwas associated for some 10 years with the Research and Development Division of the former Atomic EnergyCommission (AEC).

A native of Baxter, Tennessee, Medley first came to Oak Ridge in 1946 with the U.S. Army and was assigned tothe Facilities and Services Division, which later became the Community Affairs Division, with responsibilitiesrelated to providing housing, commercial, medical, utility and transpiration services within the City of OakRidge, prior to its' incorporation.

Medley began his Federal service with the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942 and later served as SquadronCommander in the Mariana Islands during World War II. He was discharged from active duty as a Captain in1947.

Medley and his wife, the former Carolyn Hall of Clinton, have three children: James E. Medley is serving as aLieutenant with the Army in Fort Stewart at Savannah, Georgia, after recently graduating with honors from theUniversity of Tennessee. At the time of his graduation he was a Cadet Colonel in the ROTC Ranger Corps andwas named the outstanding cadet of the year. Their daughter, Deane, graduated this month with honors fromU.T., and a second son is Mark Lamar 12 years old.

Lamar Medley served in the U.S. Air Force as a Captain in World War II. Lamar Medley, 83, of Clinton, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Medley served in World War II in the Pacific Theater as a captain in the Army Air Corps. He came to OakRidge in 1946 while still a captainand worked in community affairs.

After the Army left Oak Ridge, Mr. Medley remained and worked for the Atomic Energy Commission,predecessor to the Department of Energy.He retired from the DOE in 1976 as a contract administrator.

He was born Dec. 9, 1916, in Baxter. Mr. Medley was an active member of Memorial United Methodist Churchin Clinton and a member of thechurch's Wesley Bible Class.

According to his family, he enjoyed the outdoors, especially raising cattle.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter, James E. Medley and his wife Sarah, Mark Medley and his wifeDonna, and Deane Medley, all ofClinton; two sisters, Ruth Neal of Baxter and Louise Medley of Cookeville; five grandchildren, Harper Pietrzak,Ben Medley, Anne Medley,Patricia Medley and Corey Medley; and by one great-granddaughter, Georgia Pietrzak.

Mr. Medley's wife, Carolyn Hall Medley, is deceased.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, July 21, at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. DonThomas officiating.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 22, at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Memorial United Methodist Church, 323 N.Main St., Clinton, TN 37716.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.
