When fouryears old emigrated with his parents to Morgan County, Indiana, in which county he has lived continually ever since. On August10, 1862, he enlisted in the 67th Regt., Ind. Volunteers, was taken prisoner with his regiment at Manfordsville, Kentucky, aboutSeptember 15th or 20th. While a paroled prisoner he was taken sick, and confined to the hospital some eight month, and thendischarged on account of disability, for which he is now drawing a pension. On the 4th inst. being the 57th anniversary of hisbirthday, the boys decoyed the old man off several miles into the woods for the ostensible purpose to hunt rabbits, continuing theirchase until about noon, in the meantime his friends and relatives to the number of sixty or seventy had assembled at his residenceand prepared a sumptious dinner; it looked as though enough to feed a regiment. When uncle Baalam got in about noon with hisgame expecting to have a roast and was ushered into the crowd, saw the feast prepared for him, to say the least the surprise wascomplete. Uncle Balam - well he laughed and cried all at the same time. After all had partaken of the feast and passed the usualcompliments, the afternoon was spent in having a general good time. We hope he may live to enjoy many such happy birthdays.----------------Balam Bolin Obituary

"Graces," Faith, Hope and Charity, hovered around her dying bed, casing their white light on the dim pathway which leads fromthis world to the "Beautiful Beyond." Truly, "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." A short service was held at the house bythe writer. Many friends participated: and then, followed by the bereaved husband, and sorrowing children a large number offriends, the remains were conveyed to the Williams' graveyard and laid to rest. The husband and seven children are left sorrowingand sighing for the mother who bent all her energies for years to their best interests, often under the trying ordeal of adversecircumstances.

OBITUARY(Smith County Pioneer)

Maude Hubbard Lived Full Life of 102 Years

Maude Hubbard, daughter of Jackson and Lucinda Bales, was born Dec. 20, 1872 in Bloomington, Ind., and departed this life Oct.29, 1975, in Smith Center at the age of 102 years, 10 months and 9 days. Death came at Ingleboro Rest Home, where she had beenlovingly attended for nine years.

She was baptized into the Church of Christ on March 18, 1894, and remained a faithful member until the end.

On March 5, 1896, she was united in marriage to David Allen Hubbard, moving from Indiana to Kansas in March of 1900.

To this union were born five children. Preceding her in death were her husband and eldest son, Floy Lee.

Surviving children are Mable Louise Gano of Colorado Springs, Miner Hubbard of Smith Center, Paul Hubbard of Lebanon, andJessie Mae Graham of Colorado Springs; 12 grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was a loving mother, a dedicated Christian and an inspiration and strength to all who really knew her.

Roy Harris officiated memorial services at Simmons Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 1. Lawrence Kern was the vocalist and sang "AbideWith Me" and "It Is Well With My Soul".

Notes for DAVID ALLEN HUBBARD:Loese Hubbard told Dolores Gano that Maude and David Hubbard moved to Smith County Kansas to work for Albert Cooksey, who is believed to be a cousin. Albert Cooksey married Jane Godsey, daughter of Joseph and Esther (Whisenand) Godsey who wasa sister of Elizabeth E. Godsey, wife of Henry Curtis (Curt) Bales, so it is possible Maude and David were related only by marriagethrough the Bales family. Albert Cooksey lived about six miles northeast of Lebanon on one of Charley Pennington's farms. In 1910 Maude's cousin, Curt Bales (son of Hawkins Bales) moved in across the road from Albert Cooksey to another Penningtonfarm. White Rock Creek ran through their farm. This was in the Salem area, which was quite a village until the Rock IslandRailroad was built and most of the town moved to Esbon and Lebanon. All that remained of Salem was a general store, blacksmithshop, Methodist Church, school and a few family residences. After one to two years the Curt Bales family moved to Illinois. Theycame back to Kansas in October 1913. Charles F. Bales, son of Curt Bales wrote the book "Twice a Boy" from which thisinformation was taken.

Another connection between these families is that Rebecca Hartsock, whose mother was Rebecca Whisennand, married WillisHubbard, father of David Hubbard. Mary Hartsock, sister to Rebecca married Abraham Godsey, whose son Joseph married EstherWhisenand and their daughter Jane married Albert Cooksey.-----------------------------------------The Bloomington Telephone, Sep 20, 1884, page 8:Hindostan--The store room of Rev. Less than a week prior to his death, he and wife were visiting their son and familywho lived about 8 miles from there, realizing probably that it would be his last visit. After giving in detail a general biography of the deceased, the reverend gentleman thenselected his text suitable for the occasion lasting for over an hour. The masterly oration throughout was most touching and affectingthrough most useful and salutary of the spiritual welfare of the vast assembly who came there on the sad occasion. The funeralprocession was one of the largest and most representative that took place in this vicinity for many years, which constituted ampleproof of the love and respect deceased was held by all classes in the community.

The deceased was a most devout and attentive member of the "Church Of Christ" which he joined several years ago.

Interment took place in the cemetery south of Lebanon, Kans., where he raised some of his family before moving to Pawnee.
