In numerous studies examining parent behavior, researchers have found that having high, but realistic, expectations of children is the most significant contributor to their academic success (Jeynes, 2005). 2. Talk to your kids about school. In a Canadian study, researchers examined everything from how often families ate together to how much television they watched. Talking with children specifically about school was the one common connection between parent involvement and student success (Pelletier & Corter, 2004). This finding is confirmed in numerous other studies. 3. Read to your child when they’re young (and even when they’re older). Reading to children- in any language- instills in them a sense that their parents think reading is not only important, but enjoyable. Reading to children has been shown to have a positive and long-lasting impact on students’ academic success (Redding, S., Langdon, J., Meyer, J., & Shelley, P., 2004). Go to your child’s concerts and sports events. Attending events at school is one of the ways that parents can show children that they think school is important. It also builds a general sense of involvement, which, according to Jeynes (2005), may be most beneficial to children’s success. 5. Read your child’s report card. Monitoring students’ progress by doing things like reading report cards carefully and talking to children about report cards has been shown to improve students’ chances for success- particularly students in secondary school (National Center for Education Statistics 1985). 6. Go to parent teacher interviews/conferences. Parent teacher interviews provide an opportunity for the parent to build a bridge between the home and the school. While “at home parenting” has the most significant impact on student achievement, collaborative relationships between teachers and parents also improve students’ chances for success (Harris and Goodall, 2007). These six simple steps can lead to improved attendance, improved student engagement, more positive relationships between parents and teachers, and increased student success overall. Derry West Village Public School puts the spotlight ion Black Heritage.
In December 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month, following a motion introduced by the first black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honourable Jean Augustine.
During Black History Month, students, staff and parents from Across Peel will participate in a number of activities that promote the understanding of the many contributions made by black Canadians. Here is a list of events happening at Derry West Village P.S.
Jan. 10, 2017 * Fana Soro, Yamo! Yamo! Greetings from West Africa performance for our FDK, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students and staff. Feb. 2, 2017 * Leslie McCurdy, The Spirit of Harriet Tubman performance for our Grades 3, 4 and 5 students and staff. Feb. 9, 2017 * Spotlight on Black Heritage presentation at our Central Board office.
Parents play an important role in the development and education of their children and in the success of the school community. At Derry West Village Public School, we welcome and encourage the participation of parents and community members, and are grateful for the countless hours our volunteers contribute throughout the school year. To volunteer at our school, you must complete a short interview and a criminal record check. A criminal record check is required for all school volunteers in Ontario. Even if you want to accompany your child on a field trip,
Offence Declaration required for returning Volunteers
you need this record check. Once you have completed the process, you are on file with the Peel District School Board as being a school volunteer. All returning volunteers will receive an Offence Declaration form that must be filled out and returned to the board office each year. Completing the Offence Declaration will ensure that you can continue volunteering in the next school year. Expect to receive the form in February.

Saturday, April 1, 2017 – 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mississauga Secondary School, Mississauga The Peel District School Board is hosting its annual parent conference on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at Mississauga Secondary School in Mississauga. Once again, the conference will focus on numeracy—30 out of 60 workshops help with math.
Numeracy & Beyond
Parents will still have the opportunity to attend workshops on other topics, including literacy, special education and science. This free learning event is open to Peel parents of students at all grade levels. Child care will not be provided. The conference includes:
a powerful keynote presentation focused on math success
your choice of 60 practical workshops facilitated by Peel board staff
a display area with educational exhibits from local organizations
free lunch and an opportunity to meet Peel parents
Peel Board supports success with ongoing communication throughout the year.
Continuing this year, there will be no school-wide parent/teacher interview conference day scheduled for the February reporting period. Report cards (Grades 1-5) and the Kindergarten Communication of Learning will be sent home February 10, 2017.
By this point in the school year, we have found that most families are well aware of their child’s progress based on the ongoing communication from the school. You will receive a letter with the February report card that indicates if your child is meeting expectations. Should your child’s progress be of concern, the teacher will contact you to discuss ways to work together to further support his/her learning by February 28, 2017.
Our staff are committed to providing families with the information they need to support their child’s success and will continue to communicate with families throughout the school year. The best way to see how your child is progressing in school is through the ongoing communication your receive.
Some of the ways you may keep up-to-date about your child’s progress include the following:
Talk to your child about school
Review your child’s homework and agenda
Receive copies of marks your child has received on assignments and tests
Ongoing communication with your child’s teacher
If you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

Lates Parents we need your help!! It is very important for students to arrive at school on time and be prepared for their school day. When students are late for school, they miss the morning announcements, introductory instructions and interrupt the lesson that is already in progress for the children in the class. We are asking all parents for their cooperation in assisting
their children to arrive at school on time. If that means organizing snacks and backpacks in the evening and taking into account your travel time in the morning, please do so. Punctuality is an important life skill that needs to be taught to all our students whether they are in Kindergarten or Grade Five. Let’s commit to making 2017 the year we are all on time for school!
