Communication
Effective communication is a key challenge as well as a majoropportunity for all organisations these days, not least for the Church. In the world of communication, standards and expectations arerising all the time.
The Communications Team in the Diocese of Derry and Raphoe, chaired by the Archdeacon of Raphoe, The Venerable Scott Harte, isto be congratulated for some significant successes in ourcommunication strategy in recent years.
The Diocesan magazine, n:vision, edited by Rev Pat Storey, continuesto be recognised as the premier diocesan magazine in the Church ofIreland, and has again in 2010 received first prize at General Synod. The Diocesan Website, designed by Rev Earl Storey, our DiocesanCommunications Officer, has similarly been awarded first prize in itscategory. These are notable achievements, and I warmly congratulateeveryone involved in the production of both of these important toolsof communication.
The purpose of this Diocesan Directory is also to communicateeffectively, to make accessible to a wide circle of people, both withinthe diocese and beyond, a wealth of information about centraldiocesan administration and management, as well as about theparishes and the clergy. I always keep a copy within easy reach.
The experienced and gifted editor, Canon David Crooks, has onceagain produced a useful and attractive volume to which many peoplewill turn again and again through the course of this year. I am certainthat I will rely on it frequently. So I offer my grateful thanks to Davidfor the good work he has done for us all.

In 2011, we shall celebrate some significant centenaries.
1111-2011
The Irish Church originated in the mission of St. Patrick in the fifth century. Soon, greatmonastic seats of learning such as Clonmacnoise and Glendalough were established. Fromsuch centres, the great saints and scholars of the Irish Church, including Columba, wentabroad, to Iona, and soon, to the European continent, to return the Gospel to Europe afterthe faith had almost disappeared following the collapse of the Roman Empire. For thesecond half of the first millennium, the Irish Church was monastic in character. Being on aremote island, it developed independently. Whereas on the Continent, the prevailing formof monasticism was Benedictine, with its ordered rule and way of life, the Irish form ofmonasticism outside the great monasteries was very different, much more austere and strict.
In 1111, the first of three great reforming Synods was held at Rathbreasil in Co. Tipperary. At this Synod, Irish monasticism was modified, and the date of Easter was brought into linewith continental practice. The most important achievement was the creation of thediocesan and parochial system. Henceforward, the country was divided into the diocesesthat we still have today, with minor boundary alterations, ruled by a bishop, with parishesserved by a priest. Many of our great cathedrals such as St. Patrick’s in Dublin and St.Canice’s in Kilkenny, date from this period.
At the Reformation in the 16th Century, the Irish Church was separated from Papaljurisdiction and regained its independence. The Plantation of Ulster in the early part ofthe 17th century brought in Scottish Presbyterian and English settlers. Today, the Churchof Ireland is the oldest part of the world wide Anglican Communion.
1611-2011
In 1604, King James I summoned a great conference at Hampton Court, thepurpose of which was to sort out differences between Puritan and Anglicanelements in the Church of England. At this time, the need for a newtranslation of the Bible was becoming more urgent. Following the HamptonCourt Conference, translation from the original languages, Hebrew and
Aramaic and Greek commenced, resulting in the King James or Authorised Version of theBible in 1611, 400 years ago. The Authorised Version was the culmination of a century’swork, and was the product of the labour of several scholars. It built upon the foundationslaid by the great 16th century translators, William Tyndale and Myles Coverdale.
2011 – A Year of Centenaries
In their preface, the translators say, “We never thought from the beginning that we shouldneed to make a new translation, nor yet to make of a bad one, a god one…but to make agood one better, or out of many good ones, a principal good one, not justly to be exceptedagainst; that hath been our endeavour, that our mark”.
In the 19th century and since, many ancient manuscripts of biblical texts were discovered, which were much older than the texts available to the AV translators, so it is now possibleto have modern translations, such as the Revised Standard Version and the New EnglishBible, based on these older manuscripts. Being nearer the time of the New Testament, these manuscripts enable scholars to produce much more accurate translations. As aresult, and because English is a living and changing language, the Authorised Version isnowadays much less widely used. Nevertheless, it holds for ever, a very important place inthe history of English and Irish worship, devotion and biblical study, and is a suprememonument of the English Language and its literature.
1911-2011
The production of Succession Lists of Parishes and Clergy of the Dioceses of the Churchof Ireland began in 1814 with the publication of The present state of the Established Church orEcclesiastical Register of Ireland for the Year 1814. Later in the century, and early in the 20thcentury, others produced Succession Lists with biographical notes on the clergy diocese bydiocese. The most outstanding of these was Canon James Blennerhassett Leslie (1865-1952), Rector of the parish of Kilsaran in the Diocese of Armagh for 52 years. Hepublished eight volumes including Derry Clergy and Parishes in 1937 and Raphoe Clergy andParishes in 1940. His first volume, Armagh Clergy and Parishes was published in 1911, 100years ago. Leslie also produced Succession Lists for most of the other dioceses which hewas not able to publish. These are in manuscript in the Library of the RepresentativeChurch Body in Dublin.
In 1993, a Committee of the Diocesan Library of Connor, Down and Dromore updatedand published Leslie’s unpublished Lists for Connor Diocese. This was followed with Clergyof Down and Dromore in 1996, and with Clergy of Derry and Raphoe in 1999. Since then, eightmore groups of diocesan Succession Lists have been updated and published, and theremaining four are being edited with a view to publication in the near future. Theseinclude Cashel and Emly and Leighlin, and Ossory, which will both be published hopefullyin mid-2011, to mark the centenary of Canon Leslie’s first publication.

The FIFA 2010 World Cup was played in SouthAfrica between 11 June and 11 July. Thirty twointernational teams from around the worldcompeted for the ultimate prize in soccer. Inthe United Kingdom we will probablyremember the tournament for the very poorperformances from the English, French andItalian teams. Much was expected from theseelite teams. Their failure was largely put downto their lack of motivation and teamwork. Inorder to win any team competition thecompetitors must work together to achievetheir goal. Two of the teams that showed greatteam spirit, Spain and the Netherlandscontested the final in Johannesburg.
As part of our diocesan initiative, “Transforming Community, Radiating Christ” we recognisethe importance of team work. Indeed one of our strap lines is, “We serve in teams.” Thedictionary definition of a team is, “a single unit composed of individual components for the purpose ofaccomplishing a common goal.” When St Paul wrote to the young church in Ephesus he had thesame thing in mind. “There is one body and one Spirit – just as you were called to one hope.”
Regrettably, the church does not always play as a team. Yes, we can resemble a football game attimes. If you have ever been to a major football match you will have seen this for yourself. There will be 22 players doing all the running about while tens of thousands cheer or boo fromthe sidelines. We can be like this in our parishes as well. A small percentage doing all the hardwork while others stand back and observe.
What a contrast to what St Paul says regarding the task of ministry in the “body of Christ.” Godhas given church members specific gifts for a very special purpose. Each one of us has God giventalents that we are meant to use for the “building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unityof faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God.” In a football team it would be no good if they hadeleven goal keepers or eleven centre forwards. For a football team to be successful they needplayers who can play in a particular position, but yet contribute to the overall performance. Thesame is true in the church. When we work together, for the good of the church, then thingsstart to happen. Spiritual growth occurs in individuals and the church benefits.
In generations gone by, perhaps we had too many spectators and not enough players.Hopefully, things are changing. The rural deanery “listening evenings” held just before theWorld Cup clearly demonstrated that many more people are fully engaging in parish life. Theenthusiasm and energy of the parish teams was evident at each venue.
Transforming Community,Radiating Christ – “We Serve in Teams”
God wants us to be good team players in order that his church here on earth can grow. Theonly way to be effective is to realise that every person has an important role to play in winningthe game. For the “body of Christ” to work correctly, each member has to perform theirfunction to the best of their God given ability.
Over the last eighteen months many good news stories have emerged from across our diocese. Most, if not all of them have resulted from people working together in teams, from the ideasstage, through planning, implementation and review. Often the process has been difficult andtime consuming but perseverance paid off.
As you read through the pages of this 2011 Diocesan Directory you will clearly see that there aremany teams working together, both at parish and diocesan level. Team work has paid off andwill continue to do so in the future.
In St John 17:20-26 we read how just before his arrest Jesus prayed for his disciples. His prayerwas clearly one for unity, not a unity in terms of structures, administration or organisation, buta unity based on love and obedience. That his followers might be united as he and his fatherare united. For a football team to be successful the players must work together under thedirection of the manager. Imagine what we can do in our parishes under the direction of theTrinitarian God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

DRY and RDYC work in conjunction for the progression and facilitation of Youth Workin the United Dioceses of Derry and Raphoe
Over the past year, DRY have been on a new journey, to find a new person to fill thepost of Diocesan Youth Officer. On the 6th September, I, David Cavan, stepped into thepost, with great excitement and a healthy amount of fear!
One of the things that has happened this year with no help from myself I may add, which has been a big success was the RDYC weekend away to Gortin. Below is an articlewhich was written for the Diocesan Magazine. Accompanying it are some great photosof the weekend away. Hopefully by this time next year there will be lots more to report.
RDYC YOUTH WEEKENDFriday 17th – Sunday 19th September 2010
Having all safely arrived in the quiet village of Gortin, it was time to get settled in andfind out who was who. This year the ice-breakers where led by the hugely popular NoelBoyd and a new face at the RDYC event, Kirsty. They played all kinds of games to getthem well introduced in the big gym. After the ice was broken, the weekend had trulybegun and after supper, wind down started with them settling down to a movie andpopcorn and even a dance off.
On Saturday, it was up bright and early. Breakfast was a very quiet affair as most had notslept or slept very little. The morning activities started with heading over to theadventure team in the pouring rain. The group was split into four teams and thecompetitive edge came out in all our young sport stars. The games included TeamSkipping and Archery. Other games involved a plastic chicken and another, a hula hoop.
The mind was also put to the test with different puzzles.
After a great dinner we headed off for Gortin Lake through the fields and over streams.(Sometimes through the streams).
Each team had to build their own raft and the wacky races started.
After a lot of paddling and splashing about the Red Team emerged, victoriously fromthe Lake as the winners.
It was straight back then to the centre for showers all round and to get warmed up. Theevening then began with a BBQ style dinner and this was then followed by a talk by theFabulous Titch. His talk was both interesting and mind challenging as it finished witheach team racing to complete a puzzle.
After the talk it was further mind challenging as it was Quiz Time, with the quiz beingset out by the puzzle master Alvin. This year Alvin added another twist in the role of acard that took points off different teams in different rounds. After a mind boggling 10rounds the top three teams were announced and it was Alan Alcorn’s team that cameout victorious, but we also had a prize for the team with the least points and the prizeof a tin of beans was collected by Shane Mc Bride with great delight.
After an eventful day, supper was given and then it was chill out time with the homecinema with popcorn and treats.
On Sunday morning, after breakfast everyone attended the local parish church wherewe were given a warm welcome. After the service, we returned to the centre for a gameof Pictionary with many weird and wonderful things to draw. After the game ofPictionary was Sunday Lunch, and then it was tidy up time and the most importantthing of all, a group photo. That was the ending of another youth weekend,
We hope to see you all there next year and thank everyone for coming this year!!!

Mothers' Union is an international Christian charity which has 4 million members in 81countries. By supporting marriage and family life worldwide, especially through timesof adversity, members tackle the most urgent needs which challenge relationships andcommunities. We are also represented at the United Nations Commission on the Statusof Women.
I was very honoured to be commissioned as Diocesan President for Mothers’ Union inthese dioceses by Bishop Ken Good, in Christ Church, Londonderry, on Sunday, 21stMarch, 2010. My vision for Mothers’ Union in our dioceses is that we should promoteChrist through our aims and objects, making Him visible and real in our churches andcommunities, and in so doing enable Mothers’ Union to extend the kingdom of Christ. This is not a vague hope, but a goal we actively pursue through prayer, programmes, policy work and community relationships. Building on past strengths, we are seekingnew ways to minister in relevant ways to younger women, while maintaining thefellowship of our existing members. We live in a different world to that of our founderMary Sumner, but if anything, I believe Mothers’ Union has as crucial a role today insupporting families with the challenges they face in the 21st century.
In 2011 we plan to support families through our ‘Passionate About Parenting’ courses. We are looking forward to welcoming Mrs Karen Hill, Chichester Diocese, who is aformer Trustee Member of Mary Sumner House. She will be the keynote speaker atour Branch Training meeting in 2011. There are currently three trained ParentingFacilitators in Derry and Raphoe who work with parents to give them the confidencethey need to do the most important job they will ever undertake. I would encourageyou to promote Parenting in your parishes.
Another focus of our work is the ‘Bye Buy Childhood’ Campaign which waslaunched on 14th September, 2010. Childhood is now treated as a marketingopportunity. In the UK, for example, it is worth £99 billion per annum. A total of£350 million is spent persuading children to consume.
On average, our children:• See around 10,000 ads a year.• Recognize 400 brands by the age of 10. Over 70% of 3 year olds recognize theMacDonalds symbol. However, less than 50% know their own surname.

The Bishops’ Appeal fund for world development was set up by the House ofBishops in 1972 following a great need for assistance in developing countries. Anadvisory committee was set up, which reports to the Standing Committee within thecentral church. The purpose of the committee is
1. To raise awareness throughout the Church of Ireland of the needs of the poorcountries,
2. To raise funds and to allocate grants to worthy projects submitted by developmentagencies, churches and individuals,
3. To have funds readily available to allocate when disaster strikes, such asearthquakes, flooding and food shortage.
The advisory committee meets six times a year. Allocations for disasters etc. can bemade between meetings by the two Archbishops. Funds normally come fromindividual members of parishes and then through their dioceses. Some funds arereceived directly from individuals and through bequests in wills. Gift aid is claimedon money received if the donor indicates that they are eligible to pay income taxeither in Northern Ireland or in the Republic.
The Chairman of the Advisory Committee, Bishop Burrows says, “We hope that weachieve something in educating the church at home about current developmentissues, whether it be through encouraging informal prayer and prayerful action, stressing the Biblical and theological imperatives that tenures all our work, promoting fair trade and awareness of issues in climate change as they impingeupon the poor, lobbying governments, which in these lean economic times caneasily be tempted to cut overseas aid budgets in a manner that frankly costs lives. The work of Bishops’ Appeal goes far beyond fund raising, vital as it is – it is aboutthe quest for justice which should always characterise those who pray the Lord’sPrayer daily, and yearn for a kingdom in which no-one has to put off until tomorrowreceiving the bread which is their entitlement today”.
The grants allocated to projects and disasters up to 31st October 2010 were:-
Education £62,000Rural Development £185,000Medical/Health £57,000Disaster/Famine £286,000Total £590,000
Currently the Appeal is concentrating on Water, ie., Water of Life. “I was thirsty andyou gave me drink”, St. Matthew 25:35

• Watch many hours of TV. On average, children aged 5-16 now spend nearly 6hours a day in front of a screen - TV and internet.
However, it’s not all bad. The facilities we have for communications and gettinginformation are amazing. The widening of our horizons is wonderful in so manyways, but the effect of so much commercial pressure is hard to withstand – for anyof us, not just children.
In Mothers’ Union we want to challenge the negative side of commercialization –particularly the commercialization of childhood. We believe that children should bevalued as children, not as consumers.
We want to raise awareness and empower families to address the influences of thecommercial world within the home by offering and modelling alternative Christ-ledways of living and responding. We want to help childhood last longer and behealthier.
As a start we would encourage you tocheck out your consumer habits – use theBye Buy Test.
Everything we do in Mothers’ Union isgrounded in prayer. I close with a prayerwritten by Mrs Elsie Stewart fromStranorlar Group Mothers’ Union.
O God, in whom I put my trust, thank youthat long ago, even before I was born, you promised to love me unconditionally andthat nothing would separate me from that love. Thank you, in spite of human frailtyand sin, that you loved mankind so much that you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, to dieon the Cross, enabling me, through repentance and faith, to have a personalrelationship with you. Empower me, as your child, to develop growth and maturitywithin this relationship by striving to live within the boundaries you have laid out inScripture. Help me to acknowledge that these boundaries are there to safeguard mywalk with you. Grant, as I live to serve, that I may demonstrate my love for you andfor my neighbour. May that love be genuine evidence of my commitment to live asJesus commanded, and result in the encouragement of others to follow in the waywhich leads to eternal life. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
