Welcome all to your latest Events Diary.
Hello Everyone!
Can you believe that Summer is here already?! It seems like only five minutes ago we were celebrating New Year! We have put together the next social events diary for you and hopefully, something will be appealing to you. We look forward to welcoming you at an event.
For any event that involves food (which to be fair is most of them), we are happy to cater for special dietary requirements, all we ask is that you tell us as soon as you book (the sooner the better).
Derby District is celebrating its Bicentenary this year and we have a special concert in September where we will be hosting the award winning Oddfellows Brass Band. Tell all your friends and neighbours as they are spectacular to behold.
We are, at long last, re-introducing the Annual Photographic Competition. We will be taking entries any time up until Thursday 1 September. The theme this year is ‘Friendship’ so get your cameras out and your thinking caps on. The winners will be announced at the Friendship Coffee Morning on Thursday 8 September. Each entry is 25p, all proceeds will go to the Provincial Grand Master’s (District Chairman) charity, which this year is Sight Support Derbyshire.
We will be hosting the Inter-District Skittles Match between Derby and Burton-on-Trent, on Friday 28 October. We thought we would let you know in advance so that you can save the date…. more details in the next diary, but that is a few months away yet.
Kindest regards,
Penny
Financial Branch Secretary

Provincial Grand Master’s
(District Chairman) CharityMy name is Bill Henchliff and I
am proud to be your Provincial
Grand Master (District
Chairman) for this coming year.
The charity I have chosen to support,
with your help, is ‘Sight Support
Derbyshire’ which is part of a national
charity that helps people with sight
loss and provides low vision aids,
information sessions and resource
centres. Sight Support Derbyshire,
as the name says, is specific to
Derbyshire. I am hoping to have a
representative to come along and talk
to us at one of our Coffee Mornings
in the new future. I hope you will
be happy to support this as you have
supported charities over the years.
I am looking forward to attending as
many events and Coffee Mornings as
I can and will be visiting the Lodges
when the Provincial Grand Masters
visits are arranged.
In the meantime, may I wish you all
well and hope that the Covid pandemic
hasn’t caused you to much distress.
Yours fraternally,
Bill Henchliff,
Provincial Grand Master
(District Chairman)
Presentation EveningEveryone was very excited to
find out what the total raised
for Derby Blood Bikes was
going to be. To add to the
excitement, representatives of
Blood Bikes had brought one of
their amazing machines along
to the event. The bikes are very
impressive close up, taking up
quite a bit of space; two panniers
had to be removed to get it in
through the door!
After a drum roll (banging on
tables) Polly revealed the amazing
sum of £7,810 had been raised,
which is doubly amazing as we
have only been open socially since
July 2021. Well done Polly and
Derby District members on this
wonderful achievement.
Polly presented the cheque to their
Treasurer, Sue Vallis and her husband
Mark, one of the volunteer riders who
were momentarily lost for words, but
when he recovered he thanked Polly
and everyone and said it was such a
wonderful amount and it would be
used to help purchase a new bike, to
replace one of the older ones and not
just put into funds for petrol costs.
With our permission it would carry
the Oddfellows logo.

Short Walk
A short walk between Christmas
and New Year was arranged
on Wednesday 29 December
2021 around the lovely Darley
Park. It was felt a bit of exercise
in the fresh air would blow
away a few cobwebs.
Unfortunately, the morning started
grey and wet and the only intrepid
walkers were these three brave
souls, plus a puppy.
The weather cleared and they enjoyed
a lovely walk and a visit to the
café for coffee.
This was seen outside The Bull’s
Head, Breaston - obviously
refreshments for the discerning pooch!
Games AfternoonNot the best attended event but enjoyed by those
who did come along on a cold and foggy afternoon.
The games played were poles apart, the sublime and
ridiculous. One half player Tridominoes and were very
serious and quiet, whilst the other half played Beetle
and were very, shall we say, excitable. They also played
Dingbats and had to use their brains considerably more
than playing Beetle.
A nice afternoon, much better than staying at home
looking out of the window at a very grey day.

First Coffee Morning of 2022
Our first Coffee Morning of 2022
was a great success with 32
members in attendance.
Ashley Franklin of Radio Derby fame
came to give us a talk on his time
being employed by Derbyshire Life.
He started by saying how lovely it was
to give a talk in person and not on
Zoom and wished us well.
He had worked for Derbyshire Life
for some 15 years and very much
enjoyed it as not only was he writing,
but also taking the photos that went
with his articles. During his time, he
had been lucky enough to have several
front covers. He spoke of how he did
his research by contacting web sites,
parish councils, post offices, the local
vicar and, of course, the local pub, all
being a font of information.
He also spoke to local shops and anyone
of interest in the local area. He went
on to give us an outline of many places
he had written about with a little local
history. The list is long and as I don’t
take shorthand I am unable to tell you
of all the places, but one I do remember
is Ripley. He said that the Regal at
Ripley was the first place that Harry
Webb (the now Cliff Richard) played
under that name and it was the 3rd
May 1958 (not that I or the editor of
our magazine are fans - we are).
At the end of the talk, we drew our
usual raffle and then headed home. A
lovely morning spent with friends was
over till the next one.

1942One of our members turned 80 years old in
January and received a greetings card with
lots of interesting pieces of information from
that year. She asked me to put together a short
article for you.
As everyone knows we were in the middle of the Second
World War so, not the best of times...
Popular baby names were Mary, Patricia, Barbara, James
Robert and John.
A few well known celebrities born that year were Paul
McCartney, Britt Ekland, Billy Connolly, Aretha Franklin,
Cassius Clay *Mohammed Ali) and Joe Biden.
Hit songs from that year - Deep in the Heart of Texas by
Alvino Ray and White Christmas by Bing Crosby. Frank
Sinatra recorded his first ‘solo’ tracks.
Casablanca, Road to Morocco and Walt Disney’s
Bambi were released. Most British TV Broadcasting was
suspended for the duration of the war as they believed the
signals would help German bombers.
Duct tape was invented for use by the US Army as a
waterproof sealing tape, Superglue was created and
the first electronic digital computer was built at Iowa
State University. In September the nuclear age started.
Car manufacturers switched from making cars to
making war materials.
Instant Coffee was introduced and British people were
asked to bathe in 5 inches or less to help the war effort.
And finally... The average cost of:
Car - £315, House - £575, Loaf of Bread - £0.01, Litre
of Petrol - £0.02, Postage Stamp - £0.01 and the Average
Annual Salary was £201.
For those of you lucky enough to reach that age, I bet it
only seems like yesterday!

Calling all Knitters and CrochetersWe know there are many of you out there who love
to knit and crochet, and where there is a knitter or
crocheter there is usually a stash of wool oddments.
If you are one of these, but for whatever reason, don’t want
to or are unable to come to our crafters meetings, would
you be willing to knit or crochet some squares and donate
them to us. We will stitch them together into blankets and
donate them to a charity. Please note there are now some
morning get togethers.
Knitted squares should be Double knitting wool on 4mm
pins, 34 stitches and 62 rows of garter stitch. Crocheted
granny squares should also be in Double Knitting wool on
a 4mm hook with 6 rounds.
Squares should be sent or delivered to Oddfellows Hall, 32
Charnwood Street, Derby.
Thank you in anticipations.

Valley LodgePenny Folds has expressed her desire to retire
in March 2023. With this in mind she asked the
Committee of Management if she could reduce
her working week from five to four days from April
and they have agreed to this. She will now work

The position will be advertised later in the year with the
intention of her replacement commencing work in January

Joan Waller turns 100
Congratulations to our centenarian member,
Joan Waller, of the Loyal Good Intent Lodge.
Unfortunately, due to the COVID restrictions, we
were unable to carry out our usual visit by the
Provincial Grand Master (District Chairman) to
present a bouquet of flowers and a Telegram from
our Grand Master of the Order. This did not stop
us making a delivery by other means. After liaising
with the staff at Joan’s Care Home, we arranged for
them to be presented by the staff.
Joan’s son, Chris Waller, has kindly sent a couple of
photographs, one of Joan and one of her gifts and flowers.
It looks like she had a lovely set of gifts and cards (and
enjoys a Milky Way too). If you look closely at the photo
with the chest of drawers, our Telegram is in amongst her
cards in a wooden picture frame.
Chris told me that in her youth Joan was a violinist in a
local orchestra run by a Miss Dowding from Burton on
Trent. She left school at 14 and became apprenticed to a
tailor, aiming to pursue a career as a bespoke tailor. Sadly,
the war intervened and as soon as she had qualified as a
tailor she was conscripted for munitions work. She was
sent to Derby where she spent the war doing 12-hour
shifts in a factory making parts for aircraft. This is where
she met her future husband, Chris’s father. Shortly after
the war they married and Joan became a housewife, but
continued tailoring, making most of her own clothes.
She once won a competition for tailoring run by the
then Derby Technical College’s Department of Fashion.
Later in life, when Chris was in his mid-teens, she started
working at the local school in the kitchens and stayed there
until she retired.
Joan was also a member of the Granville Methodist
Chapel’s Ladies Choir and a member of the Woodville
Women’s Institute.
Chris thinks his mother was introduced to the Oddfellows
by his father and had been a member for “donkey’s years”.
It sounds like she has lived an interesting life and liked
being involved in many social and musical groups. It was
such a shame we couldn’t go and meet her.
May she stay safe and well in the comfort of the home.

DevastationCarnage, pillage, havoc, waste, flames and smoke rise high.
Blotting out the sky and sun, darkening my eye.
Leaping, prancing, macabre dance, before my anguished face.
Do we deserve this savage end of our once proud race?
Striving, toiling, we built a city, now consumed by fire.
Helpless anger fills our hearts, have enemies no pity?
We flee from all the bloodshed, and ask ourselves again.
Why it is we must suffer all this loss and pain?
Beautiful cities of our dreams, now heaps of rubble
amid massacred streams.
Where homes lie adjacent to war and devastation.
And hope is blitzed, grey, dulled beyond comprehension.

This was a very enjoyable
afternoon with a very friendly
atmosphere, with just ‘bit’ of
rivalry. All lodges had entered at
least one team, but the eventual
winners were the members of the
Stanhope Lodge, which is quite
amazing as Lorraine Killa and
Miles Roper had never played
before; obviously natural talent
there. At the end of the afternoon
the Provincial Grand Master
(District Chairman) presented
the team with the trophy.
Thanks to Carol Oliver for running
the event and Terry Spinks who kept
the score. Also thanks to Christine
Cunningham on providing a selection
of cold cobs sold with profits going
to the Provincial Grand Master’s
(District Chairman) charity.

Valentine Coffee MorningThe Hall was full for this Coffee Morning and members not
only enjoyed coffee/tea and biscuits, but were treated to a
chocolate heart too.
We had the usual raffle, bric-a-brac stall and blackout for a heart decorated
covered hot water bottle, heart shaped cushion and bed socks won by
Christine Shelton.
We hoped everyone got into the mood for romance!

Annual
Dinner DanceAfter a two year absence
it was lovely to put on our
gladrags and set off to the
Derby Conference Centre for
our Annual Dinner Dance to
celebrate Polly’s two years as
our Provincial Grand Master.
It was an excellent evening with
the Grand Master of the Order,
(Chairman) David Ogden as
our principle guest, sadly riding
solo as his wife, Diane had tested
positive for Covid he previous day.
We were also pleased to welcome
Mark and Sue Vallis from Derby
Blood Bikes, the charity, Polly
had chosen to support. We also
welcomed friends from Burton-
on-Trent, Beds and Bucks,
Coventry Godiva, Deeside,
Erewash, Leicester, Worcester,
Heart of England and Ormskirk
and Southport Districts.
The meal was lovely and the
service very good. After speeches
and toasts and presentations, we
were entertained by Rocks and
Frocks, with music from the 60s
and the dance floor soon filled.
A raffle raised the wonderful
amount of £440 for the charity
and there was also a donation
from the Grand Master of the
Order (Chairman).

Fundraising and Good CausesWe’ve held some lovely events since we reopened in
July 2021 to help raise money for my chosen charity
Derbyshire Blood Bikes. I have been amazed by
your kind generosity and donations, the final
amount of £7,810 was fantastic, although I do know
that additional money was donated directly to the
Derbyshire Blood Bikes by some of our members
and all of this money will go a long way to putting a
new bike on the road.
Mark from the Blood Bikes messaged me the week
following our cheque presentation (at 6.15am) to let me
know that he had taken a trip to Pidcock’s in Long Eaton
the previous day to order the new bike which will be
delivered in April. Then it will be off to the sign writers to
have the Derby District Oddfellows Logo put on it.
Mark and his wife Sue are hoping to attend one of
our coffee mornings later in the summer to show
us the new bike.
Once again I thank you for the money raised, and for
putting a new Blood Bike on the road.
Yours in Friendship
Polly
I am so proud of Derby District when I look back on the
11 years that I have been a member - that’s 10 Provincial
Grand Masters (District Chairman), and 12 charities that
we have helped and supported.
I thought about the good causes that we have raised money
for during this time, and thought newer members might
like to know who, we as a District, have helped and also
remind long standing members of what we have achieved.
We have raised funds for several small local charities:
Play & Recycling CentreHave been helping the people of Derby to reduce, reuse
and recycle waste materials since 1992, they have a
Scrap Store, a Paint Scheme and a Craft Shop as well as
holding events and workshops. We raised enough money
to purchase a second hand van to enable them to collect
waste items from local businesses that can be reused
instead of going to landfill.
Derbyshire Owls Visually Impaired Cricket ClubThis enabled them to buy their own kit as they had
previously been using one donated to them when another
club updated their strip. It also aided them with travel
expenses to away games and allowed them to purchase new
balls (balls the size of a small football with a bell inside that
the blind cricketers could hear).
Just for DogsIs a rescue and rehoming centre dedicated to the care and
rehoming of abandoned, neglected or unwanted dogs. The
money raised was used for the installation of underfloor
heating and to upgrade of their kennels.
The SamaritansThis was added to their funds to enable them to offer
a 24/7 service in their call centre which costs around
£40,000 year to run, and they rely entirely on donations.
Derby Kids Camp Provide over 300 free holidays to local kids from the Derby
area in need of a break. They take them on an adventure-
packed camping trip in the Peak District – creating
memories that last a life time.
Headway (Derby)Headway provide a range of complementary services to
support and improve life after a brain injury. The money
raised was used to train their staff.
Derby Macmillan NursesMacmillan Nurses are specialist nurses with experience
and qualifications in Cancer Care. They help you to
understand your cancer diagnosis and treatment options
and support you through your cancer experience. The
money raised was used to help fund the nurses.
We have also funded the purchases of several pieces of
medical equipment – a Speech Therapy gizmo to help
patient’s recovery after Throat Cancer or Strokes. Two
Treatment Beds/Chairs for the Combined Day Care
Unit/Chemo Suite, as well as donating money to the
Breast Cancer Unit.
All of these have been for Derby Royal Hospital.
Total Raised during this time is
£66,953.98

Easter Coffee MorningEaster Coffee Morning
It was lovely to see such a lovely turn out for the
last event before the Easter holiday. As well as
the usual tea and coffee, hot cross buns and mini
Easter eggs were available on the tables, a bargain
for just a pound.
Lots of Easter eggs had been donated for the raffle prizes
as well as the usual selection of prizes. The raffle raised £80
for the charity and the bric-a-brac stall, run by Carol and
Terry raised £77.50 and a member also made a donation of
£10 for the Provincial Grand Master’s (District Chairman)
charity. Also present was John Dick a member of Derbyshire
Peak District Oddfellows who was selling some lovely
hanging baskets and tubs in aid of the Red Cross-Ukraine.
Easter FoodsThe hot cross bun is a Christian symbol for the
cross on which Jesus died on Good Friday.
Lamb for lunch referred to the Lamb of God in reference
to the sacrifice he made, while Jewish traditions often used
a lamb as a sacrificial animal and the meat is served at
Passover, which shares some roots with Easter.
Traditional simnel cake is decorated with 11 marzipan
balls, symbolising Jesus’s apostles minus Judas. However,
it was initially associated with Mothering Sunday, when
live-in servants in the 17th century would go home to
visit their Mothers, bringing energy-dense simnel cake for
nutrition at a time when food stocks were low.
Easter FactsEaster eggs were traditionally delivered by a cuckoo in
Switzerland and by a fox in Germany.
Since the 1950s, German tradition has been to eat a
pretzel and a hard-boiled egg for dinner on Good Friday;
the pretzel is said to look like arms crossed in prayer.
Until 2018, it was illegal to sell alcohol on Good Friday in
the Republic of Ireland. The only exceptions to this were
drinking on a train, on water or in the air.
In most states of Germany, it is illegal to dance in public
on Good Friday as it’s considered a day of silence. In
Bavaria, even playing music of any kind in a bar could
result in a 10,000 Euro fine.
The Cadbury factory in Birmingham produces
more than 500m Crème Eggs every year and an
astounding 1.5m each day.
The world’s most expensive egg was sold for £9m at
Christie’s auction house in 2007. Made by Carl Fabergé in
St Petersburg in 1902, the enamel egg contains a cockerel
that pops out, flaps his wings and nods his head three
times at every hour.
Ingredients• 2 medium egg whites
• 175g caster sugar
• 150g ground almonds
• 1 tbsp amaretto liqueur
Method1. Preheat oven to 170 degrees, mark 3 and line two
large baking trays with baking parchment.
2. In a large bowl, beat the egg whites until they hold
firm peaks - you should be able to tip the bowl
without the egg whites moving.
3. Add the sugar, almonds and amaretto to the
egg whites, then use a large metal spoon to stir
everything together to make a smooth paste.
4. Dollop teaspoons of the mixture on to the lined
trays, spacing at least 2.5cm apart - they will
spread as they cook.
5. Bake for 18-20 minutes, until lightly golden. Allow
to cool completely on the trays before serving.

Our Branches raised a magnificent £151,000 for
charitable causes in 2021!
Congratulations to our
Branches and their members
for a tremendous fundraising
achievement in 2021. Helping
struggling communities and
those in need is something the
Oddfellows has been doing for
over two centuries. And despite
the pandemic, last year was no
exception.
Branches and their members raised over
£151,000 to support causes close to their
hearts, a figure up on 2020’s already
significant total of £145,700.
Fifth generation Oddfellow, Society
historian and South Yorkshire and North
Derbyshire Branch member, Paul Eyre,
reflects on the tradition of local giving.
He said: “For many years, it has been
fairly common practice for the Provincial
Grand Master of a District to choose a
charity to support during their year of
office, with funds being raised by raffles,
donations or other fundraising activities.”
Oddfellows CEO, Jane Nelson, added:
“It always astounds me when we look at
the collective yearly fundraising figure.
The generosity of our members and
Branches, especially at such times
where household budgets are becoming
increasingly tight and unpredictable, is
incredible.
“I feel immensely proud to represent
such a caring bunch of people,
those who don’t hesitate to help a
neighbour in need.
“For those who receive support, it’s
not just about the financial help,
it’s knowing that their situation is
acknowledged and that there are
people out there who care and listen.”

Fundraising for Ukraine
The Society is collecting
donations to support the work the
Red Cross is doing in Ukraine. The
Red Cross is part of the Disasters
Emergency Committee (DEC),
which unites 15 member charities
who are experts in humanitarian
aid and specialists in different
areas of disaster response.
In some areas in Ukraine, water,
electricity, and phone connectivity have
been affected. Many people are taking
cover from the shelling in basements and
bomb shelters, but are going without the
most basic supplies, like food and water.
Any donations will be used to reach
people in urgent need, If you would like
to contribute, cheques should be made

Access to expert legal helpFrom day one of membership,
all members have access to the
Oddfellows’ Legal Aid Scheme.*
We hope it's something you never have to
call on, but if you do it gives you access to
the expert help of our appointed solicitors
should you need to make a claim for
medical negligence, a personal injury, or
an employment dispute which is at pre or
tribunal stage. It also covers your family
members for personal injury and medical
negligence cases.
Help with a medical
negligence claimMedical negligence is when a healthcare
provider – NHS or private – has failed
in their duty to take care of you and you
have suffered an injury. This could be, for
example, that you’ve been given a wrong
drug, they’ve made a mistake during a
treatment, or failed to diagnose your
condition, or made a wrong one.
Matthew Heap, a Solicitor and Partner
at CL Medilaw (www.clmedilaw.co.uk),
which is one of the Society’s approved
solicitors, further explained: “Some people
get in touch with us and they know the
exact point at which they feel they’ve been
failed. For others, it’s less clear-cut, but
they know that somewhere along the line,
the care they’ve received has fallen short of
medically-acceptable standards.
“Knowing how to raise your case, and to
be heard, can be daunting when you don’t
know the process, have the contacts, or
legal knowledge. “But the support that’s
available through the Oddfellows’ Legal
Aid Scheme can help you to get the answers
you need and, hopefully, the compensation
you deserve.”
Who can make a claim? You can bring the legal action yourself or,
as the executor or next of kin, on behalf of
someone who has died because of medical
negligence, or on behalf of a family member
if that person is unable to take action
themselves because they don’t have capacity.
Oddfellows members and their family can
receive Legal Aid Scheme support as long
as the accident, incident or issue happened
while you were a member and you have
remained a member since that time.
You must start your legal claim within three
years from the date that you either realised
you’d been injured or when the incident
occurred. For children, this three-year
time limit doesn’t start until the child’s
18th birthday.
If you’re looking to make a claim on
behalf of someone close to you because
they don’t have capacity, such as they’re
unable to manage their own affairs or
have a mental disability, then the three-
year time limit doesn’t apply, unless they
recover from this incapacity.
“Taking legal action for compensation is
a way to try and secure the support that
you now need and deserve – financial or
medical. The Oddfellows and CL Medilaw
will have your back every step of the way,”
added Matthew.
How to apply for the Oddfellows’
Legal Aid SchemeTh e fi rst step is to call the Care and Welfare
Helpline for a non-committal conversation.
If you wish to move forward, you’ll need to

Provincial Grand Masters (Past District Chairman),
Christine Shelton and Maureen Burgoyne.
All business was dealt with and the new District
Officers were installed at the end of the meeting. The
new Provincial Grand Master (District Chairman),
Bill Henchliff, will be installed at the first Committee
of Management meeting. Miles Roper was installed
as Provincial Deputy Grand Master (Deputy District
Chairman) and Polly Cunningham as Immediate Past
Provincial Grand Master (Immediate Past District
Chairman, photo below left). Unfortunately, our District
Officers’ chains of office, barring the Provincial Grand
Master’s (District Chairman) chain, had been stolen,
among other things in a burglary the previous weekend.
The District also thanked Doreen Swain for her services
as Trustee. After 15 years (three terms) Doreen retired as
a Trustee, but remains a member of the Committee of
Management. Polly presented Doreen with a gift with our
grateful thanks (photo below right).
