They took part in workshops and heard interesting talks from industry experts. Some of the workshops that the students engaged in were – a forensic mock crime scene where they learnt about fingerprint and DNA anal- ysis; green energy created through temperature difference; a movie sound workshop focusing on how audio is recorded in a studio and a presentation on the potential of micro-algae as an alternative to plastic. Year 11 Chemistry Depth Study On Tuesday, I witnessed Year 12 Chemistry students engaged in designing a first-hand practical investigation into one factor that causes a shift in equilibrium. They had to apply the knowledge learnt about Le Chateliers principle and apply it to a real-life situation of equilibrium. Mr Smith informed me that when he learnt Chemistry this principle was stud- ied in first year university. I have to say I was completely out of my depth! This was how Nathan C explained it: For the first assessment of Year 12 Chemistry, our classes were required to research, plan and conduct our own independent investigations. The duties of time, resource and equipment management were all up to the students, and the success of the day depended on us (with the guidance of our teachers Mr Smith and Ms Margalit). The five -hour practical provided a unique and excellent experience aimed at developing our skills and understanding of formal scientific investigations, many of which are a relevant part of our futures at university, work and beyond. This process develops resilience from problem solving as students confront issues they did not expect, as through trial and error they apply theory in new ways and think like scientists. beetroot. Every lunchtime the students have been watering and weeding the gardens and making sure they have been able to grow in a healthy environment. Each time the boys collect the vegetables, they dress the topsoil and weed so that the new seeds are ready to be sowed into the ground. Ricco, Larry, Rhys and Joshua are commended on their diligence and perseverance to continually grow these vegetables throughout the year. ArtExpress success! A couple of weeks ago it was announced that Kate F's HSC artwork "Meltdown" was nominated for possible inclusion in the prestigious ArtExpress exhibition. It is very exciting to hear that her work was selected and will be exhibited at the Hazelhurst gallery in 2020. Many would have seen her wonderful watercolours at our annual art exhibition and the puffin artwork was a crowd pleaser! Congratulations Kate!

Sailors with DisABILITIES

Boom! Crash! While Gordon was being flattened, thunder and lightning filled the sky as we huddled below deck on the yacht, “Kayle”. On 26 November the Hearing Support Unit planned to go sailing on Sydney Harbour with Sailors with DisABILITIES, but, unfortunately the storm hit. Wind gusts of 38 knots forced us to remain in dock. Our fantastic crew organised activi-ties on the yacht for us to do such as, bucket run races, climbing the mast, a tour below deck and showed us the correct way to fold the main sail. As we walked back to Edgecliff Station we saw the devastation with trees down and debris everywhere. Although the weather was bad, and at times we were wet through, we still had a fun filled day and everyone arrived home safely thanks to our travel training program. WELLBEING ACTIVITY FOR GIRLS YEAR 7 TO 11 On Tuesday 17 December, period 3 a session of “Pound” Fitness is being offered to girls in years 7 to 11. But wait, what is “Pound”?

Instead of listening to music, you become the music in this exhilarating full-body workout that combines cardio, conditioning, and strength training with yoga and pilates-inspired movements. Using Ripstix®, lightly weighted drumsticks engineered specifically for exercising, POUND transforms drumming into an incredibly effective way of working out. Designed for all fitness levels, POUND® provides the perfect atmosphere for letting loose, getting energized, toning up and rockin’ out! The workout is easily modifiable and the alternative vibe and welcoming philosophy appeals to men and women of all ages and abilities.

The fee for the class is $8 per student. If your daughter is interested in being a part of this activity they can grab a permission note from Ms McGurgan in D1 or during roll call from their teacher.

Can you help?

The school lockers need to be cleaned out at the end of the year. We need 1-2 parents to help with this task. It’ll take approximately 2-3 hours and needs to be done in the last week of school (any day during that week).

If you can help, please contact Libby on [email protected]

by the 1st December. Thanks

CAREERS UPDATES SCHOOL BASED APPRENTICESHIPS (SBA) AND TRAINEESHIP (SBT) VACANCIES The following SBATs are available for current year 10 students. The structure is one of two forms. The stu-dents either attend TAFE and work 1 day per week and so are at school only 3 days and therefore will always be behind in their school work and for this reason it is a non ATAR pathway. Electrotechnology, construction and automotive apprenticeships take this structure. The other structure is where a student works after school hours and does on the job training during this time. Retail and hospitality traineeships are of this kind. Call or visit me for more infor-mation but apply directly to the employer in the first instance. SBA opportunities from Peter Warren Automotive Peter Warren Automotive - Artarmon 2 Positions Peter Warren Automotive - Mosman 1 Position If you have students looking to embark on a career in the Automotive Industry, please do not hesitate to contact Gary Dav-enport (Group Training Manager – Peter Warren Automotive). Or visit their website https://peterwarren.connxcareers.com/ ‘Expression of Interest’ to register their details at our Mercedes-Benz Northshore and Sydney Northshore sites. City Beach SBT vacancies are now live on the City Beach website http://careers.citybeach.com.au/cw/en/listing / . A retail pathway working in surf shops in various locations. YEAR 10 2019 WORK EXPERIENCE Thank you to those who returned their completed work experience forms on time. If you are still to return forms please do so as soon as possible. YEAR 9 – 2020 YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE FROM 30 NOVEMBER TO 4 DECEMBER 2020 I have emailed to year 9 students the work experience forms for 2020. This is because some employers require 1 year no-tice such as high demand workplaces like TV & radio stations, government departments, publishing houses and zoos. This form needs to be completed by the employer, student, parent and the school for final approval. For now just contact the em-ployer to see if there are vacancies for these dates.
