Certifying the Integrity of a Crane Pedestal
Reducing downtime on an offshore drilling platform was our client’s goal. Dimensional Engineering was brought in to validate a critical component on the platform: the 50-ton portside crane-bearing pedestal. Rather than take the traditional path of inspecting the pedestal manually, we introduced our state-of-the-art process for digitally validating the current condition. The result: We not only helped the client reduce downtime dramatically, we also completely documented the project’s results with traceable 3D data in a final inspection report.

Reducing Risk with Virtual Build & Bolt™
Our task: to monitor the dimensional accuracy of a huge vessel intercooler – 60 feet long and 18 feet in diameter – for a gas-turbine power plant during fabrication and installation. It was especially important to note distortions caused by welding. Creating a “3D Smart View” of the complete vessel enabled us to verify the design. Once the fabrication was complete and the unit was delivered, it was successfully installed without a single field modification.
Minimizing the Effects of Thermal Expansion
High-accuracy field machining on a new design of an offshore oil rig’s drilling platform has maintained continuous efficient operations, despite wide swings of temperature from morning to night and from day to day. On the movable drilling platform itself, we monitored and measured thermal expansion, analyzed the findings, and determined the design modifications needed to keep the footing surface level. Our specialists were able to dimensionally control the field machining operations to maintain tolerances that would have been unachievable through traditional methods – leading to better performance and eliminating future downtime.
