HEADLICE

Well done to the McBride SRC for their recent support of the Leukaemia Foundation’s  “World’s  Greatest  Shave”.  On  Wednesday  March  7th there was an  “out  of  uniform”  day,  and  students  and  staff  at  the  McBride  campus  raised nearly $1300 through donations. This was on top of the recent fund-raising efforts of Year 11 student Tegan Lourens who also raised around $1000 dollars for the same cause. Thank you to everyone involved for sup-porting the day. Well done to teachers Marty Waters, Jo Reader, and Adam Cochrane for shaving their heads – there were plenty of student volunteers!

SPORT TRANSPORT

ISSUE 3

Wonthaggi Secondary College has a strong sports program, fielding numerous teams in almost every sport on offer throughout the state system. Most sports involve travel for competition and travel comes at a cost. The College has, for many years now, subsidised the cost of transport asking students to pay no more than $7 per trip to make it more affordable to parents and to encour-age student participation. For example: it costs up to $600 to send a bus to Melbourne for the day. If we send 25 footballers and 10 netballers on this bus, the school subsidises the trip to the tune of $245 if every student pays the $7. The $7 must be paid prior to the day of the event. This year we have seen the development of a trend where students forget to bring their money and promise to pay after the event. Of late, this money has not been forthcoming. Please support us by ensuring that you send the $7 with the permission slip when your child is se-lected to represent the school in any sport that involves bus travel.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPIERENCE The Year 10 Work Experience Program will take place Monday August 6th to Friday August 10th. All Year 10 stu-dents are expected do Work Experience at this time.

Students are expected to contact employers themselves but will first need to check with Mr. Jack Taylor to ensure that some employers are not swamped with requests. The Wonthaggi Veterinary Clinic (including branches at Inver-loch and Newhaven) will need to be contacted via Mr. Taylor. The Wonthaggi Hospital will not be taking students in health related streams but are happy to accommodate in non health related areas.

Students may participate in Work Experience anywhere in Victoria however, transport and accommodation is the responsibility of the student and their family.

Parents are asked to encourage their daughter/son to make their own contact with employers, as this will assist stu-dents in developing job search skills for when they leave school. Mr. Taylor has a list of over 1000 employers that have been involved in the program and he can provide assistance in suggesting suitable positions.

HORTICULTURE AT DUDLEY The first few weeks of Horticulture have been very productive. This years crop of Year 9s have worked very hard on their gardens and have already produced quite a lot of fresh produce which they have either taken home or donated to the school's food technology area. The students have been working on an extended chicken run in the back of the horticulture area. After a fox finished off all our chickens we have taken the opportunity to upgrade the chicken coop to firstly fox proof it and secondly to upgrade the garden beds that were enclosed inside the existing chicken run. As autumn approaches the next few weeks will be busy with planting, weeding, mulching and harvesting.
