Location

The Department is hosted by the magnificent building of the Faculty of Engineering, in Mesiano, amid splendid mountains and with a spectacular view on the Adige valley.

This position allows researchers and students to work and study in an important University being at the same time in a quiet environment where scientific relevance and quality of life can be combined.

Short historical sketch

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DICA) of the University of Trento was created in January 1990 when the former Department of Engineering (active since 1985) grew too large and required the splitting into three new Departments.

Since its institution, DICA has always promoted and coordinated internationally oriented research on environment and land protection.

In this context both applied and base research is conducted.

The external funding income has constantly improved during the years.

In 2008, DICA employs xxx persons:

13 full professors

13 associate professors

17 assistant professors

11 administrative and technical

staff

24 doctoral students

22 research fellows

Head: Prof. Aronne Armanini

Deputy Head: Prof. G. B. Benciolini

Research groups

Building restoration, construction techniques and architecture of wooden structures are the main interests of the Building Design group. Attention is paid to the role of innovative construction techniques in traditional structures like wooden buildings, and the assessment of and the research on new methodologies for the improvement of house comfort (domotic).

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Research groups

The three groups have a shared interest in the development of new criteria for environmental protection and land planning, with particular reference to mountain areas. They use the most advanced techniquesmost advanced techniques to read and represent the land and the environment, and they focus on issues like sustainable development. Activities range from study of the collection and elaboration of geographic data to the interpretation of population dynamics and the assessment of the impact on the environment of human activities and settlements.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND MANAGEMENT

Research groups

The research areas of Hydraulics, Hydraulic Constructions and Hydrology, and Sanitary Engineering were the founding sectors of DICA. Professors and researchers, together with doctoral students, form a well-consolidated group.

The Applied Mathematics, Engineering Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, and Transformation Processes Engineering groups play an important role which traverses all the above-mentioned sectors.
