Instructions• Edit the Department Name:

– Go to View > Master > Edit Master…

– Be sure you are viewing the first master slide (Slide 1). Do this by locating vertical scroll bar on right and scrolling to top.

– Click on “Department Name” text to edit.

• Edit the Footer:

– Go to View > Header and Footer…

– Make changes to date and footer then “Apply to all”.

• Edit Cover Slide (Slide with Cathedral image):

– The cover is not a master. Simply click on text to edit.

The Pittsburgh Academy — 1787• Founded as the Pittsburgh

Academy in 1787 on what was then the American frontier, the University of Pittsburgh is the oldest continuously chartered U.S. institution of learning west of the Allegheny Mountains.

From WUP to Pitt

• With an alteration in its charter in 1819, the Pittsburgh Academy became the Western University of Pennsylvania.

• Upon relocating to its current campus in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood in 1908, the school was renamed the University of Pittsburgh.

A State-Related University

• Pitt was a private institution until it became part of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education in 1966.

• As a state-related university, Pitt receives public funds and offers reduced tuition to Pennsylvania residents.

From Academy to WUP to Pitt

• The Pittsburgh Academy was founded in 1787. In 1819, it became the Western University of Pennsylvania (WUP).

• Upon relocating to Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood in 1908, the school was renamed the University of Pittsburgh.

• Pitt was a private institution until 1966, when it gained state-related status.

University of Pittsburgh System• The Pitt system comprises the 132-

acre Pittsburgh campus as well as regional campuses in Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown, and Titusville.

astronomy, genetics, organ transplantation, and virology, among other fields.

• The Salk polio vaccine was developed at Pitt.

• A Pitt professor was the first to isolate and identify vitamin C.

• In 1974, Pitt was elected to the Association of American Universities (AAU), which includes North America’s leading research universities.
