The Curriculum Process

The development of a curriculum involves the developer in decisions about the nature and appropriateness of the substantive elements,

• method

• assessment strategies

These decisions are made in relation to the context in which thecurriculum will operate.

Why Lawton’s Model???

Its provided us with a five stage flow-chart on curriculum planning.

The first and second stages of his model deal with the need to achieve clarity about the aims of education, and the question about knowledge and values, which should be the concern of education irrespective of the kind of society. The questions need to be considered by curriculum planners.

Need of this Model

The model has been developed by Denis Lawton as a reaction against what he sees as the danger of the Behavioral Objectives Model/Taylor Model. As the name implies this model propose a curriculum as the whole way of life of a society and the purpose of education is to make available to the next generation what we regard as the most important aspect of culture.

“Curriculum is a selection from the culture of society of aspects which are so valuable that their survival is not left to chance, but is entrusted to teachers for expert transmission to the young”
