Did you know…• Dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever are the

most common mosquito-borne viral diseases in the world• Only the female mosquito feeds on blood. This is

because they need the protein found in blood to produce eggs. Male mosquitoes feed only on plant nectar.

• Mosquito is attracted by body odors, carbon dioxide, and heat emitted from animalsor humans

• The female Aedes mosquito searches for suitable places to lay their eggs.

• Aedes are day-biters, most active during dawn and dusk.

Symptoms of typical uncomplicated (classic) dengueusually start with fever within 5 to 6 days after you

have been bitten by an infected mosquito andinclude :

• High fever, up to 105 degrees Centigrade• Severe headache• Retro-orbital (behind the eye) pain• Severe joint and muscle pain• Nausea and vomiting• Rash

Symptoms of dengue hemorrhagic fever include all ofthe symptoms of classic dengue plus

• Bleeding from the nose, gums, or under the skin, causing purplish bruises

Symptoms of dengue shock syndrome -the most severe form of dengue disease-include all of the

symptoms of classic dengue and dengue hemorrhagicfever, plus

• It is sometimes fatal, especially in children andyoung adults.
