Demonstration
The demonstration method or “doing” method is one used to teach skills. This is a method of teaching that relies heavily upon showing the learner a model performance that he should match or pass after he has seen a presentation that is live, filmed or electronically operated.
Characteristics of the Demonstration Method
“We learn by doing”Students learn physical or mental skills by actually performing those skills under supervision
The instructor should;• Recognize the importance of student
performance in the learning process. • Identify the most important learning outcomes. • Explain and demonstrate the steps involved in
performing the skill being taught. • Allow students time to practice each step, so
they can increase their ability to perform the skill.
Characteristics of the Demonstration Method
Advantages of Demonstrations
1. The demonstration step; gives students the opportunity to see and hear
the details related to the skill being taught
2. The repetition step; helps the average and slow learners and gives
the students an additional opportunity to see and hear the skill being taught

Advantages of Demonstrations
3. The repetition step; gives all trainees the opportunity to become
proficient
4. Utilize several senses5. Stimulates interest6. Presents ideas and concepts more clearly7. Provides direct experiences8. Reinforces learning
Advantages of Demonstrations
1. Good judgement necessary2. Vigilance required3. Demonstrations may fail4. Demonstrations may limit participation5. They may limit audience/student input6. Good demonstrations require pre-preparation
Disadvantages of Demonstrations
1. Know your audience• How much experience or knowledge do they
have?• Are you teaching them a new technique or
sharing basic information?
Procedure for The Demonstration Method
2. Set your objectives• Review your lesson plan for your objectives• What do you expect the learner to be able to
do following your demonstration?

3. Plan your preparation time• Plan for the time it takes to prepare props• Make a list of materials, tools/equipment or
props needed• Test equipment and methods etc. ahead of
time
Procedure for The Demonstration Method
4. Plan your steps and activities• Choose simple procedures• Consider the amount of pre-preparation
required• How long does it take to accomplish each step?• Do you need to prepare work stations, tools and
materials in advance?• Practice steps and activities.
