Page 9: Demonstration case studies

BAe • Client: Airbus• Contractor: Laing O’Rourke• Factory constructed to supply the

manufacturing programme for the Airbus A-380

• To achieve the tight construction timeframe, a partnering oriented process based on Prime Contracting was adopted

• Early involvement of the team helped to generate advice on buildability, cost and programming issues

• Collaboration - the team were engaged in dialogue and co-operation throughout the project

• All key completion dates were achieved

Page 10: Demonstration case studies

The Academy of St Francis of Assisi

• Client: Kensington Academy Trust• Contractor: Birse Build• The building was required to facilitate

environmental education, model good environmental design practice and offer itself as an educational resource

• Environmental / sustainability features include; PVs, Rainwater Harvesting, Sedum Roofs, Sustainable Timber, etc

• The finished building has had a on huge impact on pupils’ achievement• In 2007 44% of the Year 11 students

gained five or more A* to C passes at GCSE, in 2008 this figure rose to 57%

• In “value-added” league tables the Academy was the top school in the UK

Page 11: Demonstration case studies

Cadishead Way Stage2 Bypass • Client/s: Salford City Council & Urban

Vision Partnership• Contractor: Birse Civils Ltd• New build road • ECI to develop the design, buildability and

cost of the scheme• Partnering approach led to significant

‘Value Engineering’ ideas being developed and adopted on the scheme, including;• Innovative approach to embankment

excavation to avoid major temporary works

• Redesign of retaining wall to minimise construction and financial risk

• The Bypass opened approx 16 weeks ahead of schedule and within budget

Page 12: Demonstration case studies

Barts and London Hospitals • Client: Barts and The London NHS Trust• Contractor: Skanska• Britain’s largest hospital programme –

refurbishment project over £1billion• Huge challenges to keep both hospitals

100% operational throughout the works• Early consideration of issues allowed

room for innovation solutions• Innovations – use of a large acoustic

screen to absorb sound and vibration • The Appointment of Sustainability

Champions was a real success• 50k tonnes of waste diverted from

landfill• 99.6% of demolition waste recycled
