The dogs will be barking and the Lions will be roaring at Medibank Stadium this Sunday. But will they be silenced by the Demons? While Subiaco will be hosting Perth on the field, off it the reigning premiers are hosting the popular Bark in the Park event, a unique sporting experience where football fans are encouraged to take their four-legged friends with them to the game. However, after recording their first win of the season last Saturday against Claremont, the Demons need to stay as undisturbed by the canines around the ground as they are the Lions’ impressive unbeaten 3-0 start to season 2016. A tenacious win over the Tigers was led by stand-in captain Liam McKenna who is in his second season with the Demons after spending five seasons for a return of 18 games with Peel Thunder. In his debut season with the Demons, McKenna played 19 of their 20 games. He ranked sixth in the WAFL for number of disposals (523 at an average of 27.5). Earl Spalding, who took on the coaching reins at Perth at the start of 2015, oversaw the recruitment of McKenna. “Liam was a part of the clearance that involved Gerald Ugle. While we didn’t want to lose Gerald, when it looked like he wasn’t going to come back we took the opportunity to get a quality recruit like Liam,” Spalding said of the 23-year-old who turns 24 on April 18. “Liam certainly came highly recommended by Trevor Williams from a citizen point of view (Williams coached McKenna at Peel before moving to Perth as interim coach midway through 2014 and is now part of the Demons match committee). “He is the kind of player character-wise that we want to bring into the club. It wasn’t a hard decision. “He got squeezed out a bit at Peel because of the alignment with Fremantle, so he saw it as a good opportunity to come to us and play more regular senior footy. “He’s a bit older now and maturing a bit and still learning and trying to improve. What he does bring to the club is pretty high standards. He is part of

the leadership group this year and is setting those standards for himself and his teammates. “While we’ve got guys like that at the club we are a chance.” Spalding said the team was pumped and ready to take on the Lions this week after last Saturday’s victory – and wouldn’t be distracted by the unusual match-day environment! “To get to where we want to be we have talked about raising expectations not only on each other but about the process. Part of that process is treating a win on its merits,” said of the team’s maiden win to kick-start season 2016. “That takes time it’s been an issue at the club for some time. “The good thing is that we are playing a team like Subiaco who we hold up all the time as an example of who we want to be like. It’s a great challenge for us. “We’ve got a fair bit to prove and it’s not just about winning games for us but backing them up. “We need consistency if we are going to play finals and that’s what we’re aiming for whether that eventuates this year or next.”Bark in the Park supports Guide Dogs WA and Dogs’ Refuge Home and is sponsored by City Farmers. There will be treats for all the dogs in attendance along with a chance to win special prizes throughout the game.

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, c/o Football Budget, PO Box 911, Subiaco WA 6904. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

It seems every WAFL club has sold number plates at some stage. As a fundraiser, it was probably tough to beat. The cost to the club was minimal and supporters would often try to outbid each other to get the club number plate bearing the number of their favourite player or a premiership year. But before there were personalised plates, the clubs sold number plate holders, which clipped over the plates and left people in no doubt as to which club the car’s owner supported. Those old number plate holders are pretty difficult to find these days. One type has featured in this column previously. But, over the summer, I chanced upon a different type of number plate holder. Well, you might actually consider both were the same type because the holders themselves are the same. What’s different is the style of the club stickers on them. The first type of sticker, which appears to be the older one, gives the club’s initials, then its nickname, then the initials again. So, for instance, the East Fremantle version reads: “E.F.F.C. OLD EASTS E.F.F.C.”. I suspect these date to the 1970s. The later-looking set feature stickers in club colours with the club’s nickname. There is a WAFL logo at either end. This second set was produced by a company called Town and Footy Plates, which was a business that operated under the umbrella of the Spastic Welfare Association of WA’s Goodwill Industries. Though I suspect the same group would have made the first set, I would welcome any information on either set of plate stickers. I suspect these would all be pretty popular at auction. I wonder if anyone kept a set of them aside back in the day?

Ken is a long-time collector of WAFL memorabilia who first contacted me when this column started back in 2011. But, until recently, he had never shown me this little plastic doll, which appears to date to the 1950s. Dolls like this are not uncommon in Melbourne, where they were usually dressed in home-made footy paraphernalia made by the owner’s grandmother. But I’ve never seen a West Australian version. What makes this appear to be a doll relating to the Perth Football Club is that the Essendon jumper, which is also black with a red sash, has never had a red collar. The Perth jumper has, though – from 1899 to the mid-90s. Ken also bought the doll in a vintage shop in Western Australia, making it more likely to relate to the WAFL than the VFL. Then again, the doll has red-and-black socks, and I was under the impression that Perth wore plain red socks in the middle of last century? So, has anyone got an answer on this one? Is it Essendon or Perth? Or neither? The doll’s clothing certainly looks home-made, so it wouldn’t surprise me if

someone’s grandma simply got the socks wrong. In the first couple of editions of WAFL Collectables for 2016, I wrote about the pennants that were sold at grand finals from the late 1950s through to the late 1970s. For years now, I have been trying to work out who made them, how they were issued and in which years they were issued. Thanks to a couple of recent discoveries, I was able to conclude they were made as early as 1959 and as late at 1977. I would welcome any information that shows they were issued earlier or later than these dates. But Steve’s memory of the 1959 Grand Final is the first piece of information I have had that indicates the pennants were sold at Subiaco Oval on the day of the game. It had previously been postulated that they were produced a week out from the game and sold at the offices of the Daily News in the city. Steve distinctly remembers people buying the little flags from a seller at the entrance to the ground on match day. While we’re on the subject of pennants, Melbourne-based collector David recently picked up this little beauty as part of a large collection he bought. The 1952 pennant bears the names of the Victorian and West Australian teams that clashed at the MCG on June 14 of that year. In one of the best performances ever by the Black Swans in Melbourne, the Vics got up by just nine points. The WA team that day boasted the likes of Ray Schofield, Bernie Naylor, Steve Marsh, Merv McIntosh, Ken Caporn, Frank Allen, Ron Coffey and Jack Clarke, so it’s no wonder they ran the Vics close. The pennant is actually the first I have ever seen featuring the names of a WA state team. Apparently, it wasn’t unusual for them to be made for state games in Melbourne and, given the colour of the pennant, it was obviously aimed at the Victorian market. So, has anyone seen another? WA also played at the MCG in 1955, 1958 and 1959, so

it’s possible pennants were made for those matches.

The Jungle Book is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli, a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan, who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera, and the free-spirited bear Baloo. Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa, a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes

It can’t have derby status but the battles between Peel and East Perth are building into an interesting rivalry. Not only are the clashes worth premiership points but there is also the examination of the AFL-listed players in the teams to determine whether Fremantle or West Coast have the better depth. In terms of form, Peel is confident its Dockers talent is a few steps ahead. And if it again combines well with the WAFL-only contingent then East Perth might wave an early goodbye to 2016 in this round. While a winless Fremantle might call on resources for the western derby, defender Sam Collins, Jack Hannath and Darcy Tucker are likely to remain at the local level to be headaches for the Royals. Rory O’Brien has averaged almost 30 possessions per match since his return to the club while Rockingham product Calvin Thorne and Brad Walsh, back after a stint with Carlton, have added some spice to the Thunder’s two wins from three outings. Yet they have climbed to third on the ladder with Tanner Smith being their leading forward with just five goals. Significantly, East Perth, led by Paul Johnson and Jonathan Giles, have dominated the hit-outs against opponents this season. But the Royals haven’t been able to capitalise on the advantage. Their three straight losses to open the season are a cause of great concern. Indeed keeping possession has been a problem for Jaymie Graham’s team. Only one player, Kane Lucas, is averaging more than 20 touches a game. The loss of Garry Moss to a knee injury will hurt the Royals, especially their movement of the ball out of defence. Moss’ absence would be more responsibility on Mitch Fraser in the back half. Eagles’ Glenelg draftee Matthew Allen has shown some promising signs when the ball has been in his forward half.

SUBIACO v PERTHMedibank Stadium has never been a happy hunting ground for Perth. Over almost a century the Demons have been successful a little more than 38 per cent of the time. However, this fixture does provide the Demons with an important test. After their breakthrough win for the season last round they get to gauge their improvement against the league trendsetter over three seasons. Liam McKenna has settled into his new Leadership role, Clint Jones has made an enormous difference in the Perth back half while ruckman Angus Graham is giving his midfielders something to work with at ground level. But Subiaco keeps powering on. Chris Phelan strengthens claims to being among the league’s prime movers and Hayden Kennedy has become an inspirational contributor. And the Lions keep on winning.

EAST FREMANTLE v WEST PERTHOne problem with the bye is that it makes teams stew for that little bit longer. The Sharks’ last outing was the one that got away. They had the Thunder on the line in round two but couldn’t reel them in at the end. And it hurt. So Jamie McNamara, Cam Eardley, Mitch Boyle and James Bristow have a fair bit to get out of their system in this home clash with West Perth. The Falcons aren’t quite flying high after two losses from three outings. Unless Joe Morrow, Seva Mozhaev, Aidan Lynch and Luke Meadows can lift West Perth soon, the team from Joondalup will remain outside the finals rungs on the ladder.

CLAREMONT v SWAN DISTRICTSClaremont coach Michael Broadbridge saw the warning signs last week. The Tigers were expected to defeat Perth and that was the mindset of his team in the clash. It proved fatal. So don’t expect Claremont to fall for the same trick against a Swan Districts team that has struggled early in 2016. Jye Bolton, Ryan Neates, Mitch Andrews and Brandon Franz will also be fired up that their efforts in the previous match weren’t rewarded. Finding goals is Swan Districts’ biggest worry. Stopping them, too, is a problem. Swans have conceded twice as many points than they have produced and are averaging just 40 points per match so far this season.

Rodriguez ShieldThe Rodriguez Shield is awarded to the most consistent WAFL club of the season, with points allocated across all three grades. Clubs are awarded 10 points for every league win and four points for a reserves or colts win.

WAFL says Count Me In for a fair goThe WAFL will be kicking goals for access and inclusion when the State’s Count Me In vision is promoted at all WAFL games in Round 5.

The Count Me In round, which has been developed in a partnership between the Disability Services Commission, the WA Football Commission and the Department of Sport and Recreation, will promote the State Government’s aspiration that we all live in welcoming communities that facilitate citizenship, friendship, mutual support and a fair go for everyone. All football fans are encouraged to head to the footy on April 16 and 17 to enjoy a WAFL game and also celebrate Count Me In. The Count Me In Round will remind people that everyone can enjoy the benefits of being

part of a sports club – that could be on the field as a player, on the sidelines supporting the team, behind the scenes fundraising or taking part in the social side of club life. The round will include demonstration games at half time by integrated football teams, Count Me In promotional activities and appearances at League games by special guests. People with disability with Companion Cards and their companions, or people with specially marked tickets, will gain free entry to any of the WAFL home games during this round.

WAFC

» Integrated football demonstration games will be played as part of Count Me In Round WAFL fixtures next weekend.

Rules in FocusAfter three rounds of football we have seen an increased number of free kicks paid for deliberate out of bounds and dangerous tackles in the WAFL competition. This year players are given no benefit of the doubt in relation to deliberate out of bounds as we want to see the ball kept in play. Below is what the umpires are instructed to pay when officiating. Deliberate out of bounds - a free kick shall be awarded against a player who:• Intentionallykicks, handballsorforcesthe

football over the boundary line, without the football being touched by another player.

• Theprimaryconsiderationindeterminingdeliberate out of bounds is a player’s intention.

Below is a list of indicators that can assist our decision-making process in relation to deliberate out of bounds (DOOB):• If a player makes a genuine skill error,

this is not DOOB as the action was not intentional.

• Ifaplayeriskickingtheballoffthegroundunder pressure, he will not be penalised unless; the kick is straight at the line with force or; it is blatantly obvious as to his intention or; the kick is forceful.

• Asageneralrule, ifaplayerkickstheballup the line to open space with no players in the vicinity, a DOOB will result if the ball lands near the boundary line from where it was kicked.

Rough ConductRough conduct, prohibited conduct and charging can be similar types of acts and are free kicks and possible reports.

» Field umpire debutants Leigh Retallack (L) and Daniel Johansen(R).

By WAFL Umpire Manager Darryl Sinclair

Prohibited contact and payment of free kick:• Engaging in rough conduct against an

opponent which in the circumstances is unreasonable.

• Playerswhoareinvulnerablepositionsandnot expecting contact will be protected.

Slinging/driving opponent into the ground:• Playerswhentacklingshouldnotslingor

drive their opponents into the ground. Doing so will be deemed to be rough conduct and will result in a free kick and possibly a report.

Indicators:• Players when tackling must not lift

opponents above the horizontal. • Tackle that forces an opposition player

head first towards the ground. This is dangerous and has the potential to cause serious injury.

• Unreasonable or unnecessary force/tackler must show a duty of care.

Umpire MilestonesCongratulations to field umpires Leigh Retallack and Daniel Johansen who recently umpired their first league games. Retallack was recruited from East Perth and Johansen from West Perth.

This weekend is the opening round of the WAAFL season for all grades, including the integrated competition. Last year’s A Grade premiers University travel to Charles Riley Reserve to face off against North Beach. The tough game will give North Beach’s new recruits a chance to battle against last year’s top team. Scarborough has a tough introduction to A Grade, taking on last year’s grand finalists Curtin Uni Wesley. This will be a match to watch as the experienced Curtin Uni Wesley look to get their first win on the board away from home, while Scarborough aim to prove they are good enough to be in the top grade. Season 2015 minor premiers Trinity Aquinas kick off their season at home against West Coast. After a dominant 2015, Trinity Aquinas will be looking to secure wins early in order to climb to the top again. After losing their elimination final last year, Kelmscott take on

WAAFL season kicks offnew comers Hamersley Carine at Percy Doyle Reserve. It was a fairy-tale finish in B Grade last year for Hamersley Carine who will be looking to step it up this year as they get a feel for the next level of competition. Fremantle CBC travel to Ray Owen Reserve this week to take on Kalamunda. Fremantle CBC lost both their finals last year and will be looking to get a win over the Cougars who were lucky not to be relegated last year after claiming eighth position on the ladder by just one win. League matches starts at 2.30pm following the reserves at 12.35pm and Colts at 10.40am. Fixtures can be found at waafl.com.au or on the WAAFL App.

Can You Help? The WAFC player files are missing a date of birth for only 13 of the more than 1000 players who have played more than 100 WAFL games. Intermittently two such players will be profiled and family members sought to help fill these important gaps.

Wilfred James Patrick BROPHy - An outstanding half back with excellent ball handling and kicking skills who played 168 games for Subiaco between 1922 and 1940 and 6 state games for WA. Wilf was an older brother of Frank (Babe) Brophy and died in 1961.

John Ronald (Runty) McDONALD - A small and lightly built, but clever and elusive rover forward, who kicked well with either foot. Played 100 games for East Fremantle between 1941 and 1949 and a further 18 for East Perth in 1950. He was a member of 2 premiership teams and died in 1955.

Any members of the Brophy or McDonald families who can assist with birth details or club members or supporters who can help establish contact with family members are requested to email WAFC historian Greg Wardell-Johnson ([email protected]) or call Judy Chalmers at the WA Football Commission (9381 5599).
