“Race and class should not predict achievement. We are good at measuring and sorting kids, but not so good at
measuring the talent out of kids who do not have theprivileged life.
We must encourage kids and push them to take harder
courses and give them the support they need to succeed inthose courses.
The academic success of the immigrant students is contingentupon how they and their families are treated.
Immigrant parents normally trust us as educators yet when
we lose their support as we lose our credibility. Create schools that break the cycle of poverty—money is not
going to help you unless you know how to use it. Knowing what to do is not as important as how to do it.”
