I thought I would take this opportunity to tell you a little about the company that prints our magazine. They have always used non-toxic soy based vegetable ink but now they are now FSC certifi ed. FSC is the Forest Stewardship Council and is widely regarded as one of the most important initiative of the last decade to promote responsible forest management. Our printer has always been conscious of utilizing products and procedures that would not harm the environment, and now they are using FSC certifi ed paper.
Perhaps you’ve noticed our new paper; not only is this paper better for the environment, but it delivers the high quality color and sharpness our reader’s have come to expect from us, without added burden to our environment.
As printing costs and postage continues to go up - we still go in the mailbox, and we mail 65,000 issues each month. We haven’t raised our prices in nearly 4 years and changing our paper also helps to keep our pricing competitive and small business friendly.
We are in business for and because of our advertisers and readers. We value you
and the relationships we have built since 1994. We always welcome your feedback on Facebook and Twitter on our new changes.

C. TRAVEL TIME
WAVE MonthHere we are in the middle of WAVE month. You ask what is WAVE month? It’s the biggest booking month of the year for the cruise lines and the most amount of promotions that you possibly can think of.
If a cruise is in your future, then this is the month to contact us. All major cruise lines celebrate WAVE month with fantastic specials.
And also, you need to know that beginning February 18th for a week, we are having a cruise sale with Princess where all cruises have a deposit of only $200 per room plus all kinds of other extra goodies thrown in. This offer is good for all cruises and all itineraries with Princess for the week beginning February 18th and for 7 consecutive days.
On the other side of travel is the airlines and security. And for all those that have had concerns about their privacy when fl ying, we have this to tell you.
Facing public opposition, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reports that all controversial backscatter millimeter wave units have been equipped with ATR - a new tool to insure some personal privacy when going through airport security and that the manufacturer’s contract has been canceled.
“Rapiscan was unable to fulfi ll their end of the contract and create the ATR software that would work with backscatter units. As a result, TSA terminated the contract with Rapiscan in order to comply with the congressional mandate.”
The millimeter scanner drew fi re from critics who said the machines violated personal privacy with near ‘nude’ images of travelers and were too intrusive. There were also health concerns with the full body scanners.
TSA said all Rapiscan AIT units currently operational at checkpoints around the country, as well as those stored at the TSA Logistics Center, will be removed by Rapiscan at their expense and stored until they can be redeployed to other mission priorities within the government, TSA said.
Congress mandated as a part of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 that all TSA body scanners should be equipped with ATR by June 1, 2012, but there has since been an extension to June 1, 2013, TSA noted.
Most of the backscatter units being removed will be replaced with millimeter wave units. The millimeter units will be moved from the inventory currently deployed at other airports and from an upcoming purchase of additional millimeter wave units. By June 1, 2013, travelers will only see machines which have ATR. This means faster lanes for the traveler and enhanced security, TSA says. For more information visit www.tsa.gov.
As always, we are here to help you GETAWAY FROM YOUR EVERYDAY. Feel free to contact us and we’ll get you where you want to go and when you want to go. Service is our business and hopefully you can feel our smile in our voices when you call.
Getaway Cruises n’ Tours can be contacted at 925-679-8428 or [email protected]. Visit their website for the latest in cruise and tour specials at www.getawaycruisesntours.com.

FOR YOUR DENTAL HEALTH
Common Oral SoresThere are several types of soft tissue disturbances that can affect the mouth and there are some which are more common like canker sores, cold sores, leukoplakia and oral candidiasis.
Cold sores, also called fever blisters, appear as clusters of red, raised blisters outside the mouth, usually around the lips, but sometimes around the chin and the nose. These blisters are filled with fluid and can break open and allow the fluid to leak out. They then form a scab over the area and heal. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are highly contagious. The first infection with the herpes virus can be accompanied by cold or flu like symptoms and cause painful ulcers inside the mouth. Over the counter medications can help for some pain relief and sometimes prescription medicines may be
needed, but cold sore blisters usually heal by themselves in a week.
Canker sores are small white or gray sores that develop inside the mouth and are not contagious. They may come one or several at a time. These sores heal by themselves in a week or two weeks, and they are painful. The cause could be trauma to the soft tissue in the mouth and it is best to avoid spicy, salty or acidic foods or juices, as they can irritate the sores. Antimicrobial rinses and over the counter anesthetics can help for temporary relief.
Leukoplakia is an overgrowth of cells that looks like a rough white patch on the tissue. It usually is from chronic irritation and can develop anywhere in the mouth. It is not painful or contagious, but is usually due to chronic irritation to a particular area, like from cheek biting or tobacco use. Sometimes leukoplakia is associated with oral cancer, so it is important to see the dentist if you notice this kind of patch and get it biopsied.
Candidiasis, also called oral thrush, is a yeast infection that develops on the soft tissue inside the mouth. It
appears like a white patch that can be sore and can bleed. It is a fungal infection and usually develops when the immune system is weakened. Some medication, like cancer therapies or steroids can increase the risk of developing this infection and it is a common infection among denture wearers, so it’s very important to keep one’s dentures clean.
Your oral health is not limited to your teeth, so talk to your dentist if you get any sore or irritation in or around the mouth. Your dentist can help to manage any discomfort and also to diagnose anything suspicious early to get the appropriate treatment.

ON THE HOUSE
Replacing a ToiletReplacing a toilet may not be one of the most exciting ways to spend a Saturday, but then that’s the nice part about this particular project; you should be able to perform this little task and still have time to enjoy your afternoon.
Begin this project by arming yourself with the required tools: an open-ended wrench (1/4” or 3/8”), a crescent wrench, a pair of pliers, a screwdriver, and a hacksaw. Start by turning off the water supply to the toilet – that’s the little valve located below and behind the toilet. Flush the toilet and remove any remaining water in the tank or bowl using a small cup and a sponge. Once all of the water has been removed, disconnect the water supply line at the base of the tank by backing off the nut in a counterclockwise direction.
Next, unfasten the toilet from the fl oor. Most residential toilets are anchored
to the fl oor with a couple of fasteners called closet bolts. Some toilets are anchored by four of these devices, which are cleverly concealed with porcelain or plastic caps. In most cases a toilet is bolted to a “closet fl ange”, a device that connects to the sanitary sewer pipe and to the fl oor. Pry those closet bolt caps off with a screwdriver and remove the nuts that remain with an open-ended wrench turning counterclockwise. Now comes the fun part, removing the toilet. We suggest that you have one other person help you lift the toilet and carry it out because it’s as awkward as it is heavy.
Don’t be alarmed by the gooey mess that may appear on the fl oor where the toilet once sat. What remains is some of the wax ring, which is used to form a seal between the toilet and the closet fl ange. Remove any of the wax that remains on the closet fl ange and at the underside of the toilet using a putty knife. Chances for achieving a new leak-proof seal will be especially good if you take care in cleaning up the surface to accept the new wax ring.
Now it’s time to install the new toilet, that is, after you have assembled it according to the manufacturer-supplied instructions.
Morris and James Carey can be contacted at 1-800-737-2474 or visit their website at www.onthehouse.com.
With the toilet lying on its side, place the wax ring against the underside of the toilet with the plastic throat facing away from the toilet. Install the new closet bolts (typically provided with the toilet) to the closet fl ange in an upright position just as you found the old ones.
Stand the toilet upright and, without allowing the bottom to touch the fl oor, align the holes in the base of the toilet with the closet bolts and gently lower it until it completely seats on the closet fl ange. Install the washers and nuts onto the closet bolts being careful not to tighten them too tight; we have broken more that one toilet being too forceful! Place the bolt caps over the nuts. If they don’t seat properly, chances are that the bolts are too long. Shorten them by cutting off the excess using a hacksaw. Reattach the water supply line to the tank with the new nut and washer provided with the toilet and turn the water on and you’re good to go.

REAL ESTATE IN MOTION
Keep Your Realtor CloseMost people would tell you that the Realtor’s job is simply to help you buy or sell your home. And while this is partially true, it would hardly even begin to describe the true nature of the Real Estate Agent’s job. Real Estate is about information. Not just what a Real Estate Professional knows, but also what information they have access to and get on a daily basis. Knowledge is power, and because real estate transactions are taking place every day, it would be unrealistic to believe that anyone outside the real estate business, or even in it, could have their pulse on everything that’s happening, but it does pay to have someone on the inside and tuned into the local market.
Do you wish to know how many multi-units are for sale in the county? How about whether the investment property you’re hoping to buy will even pencil
when it’s fully occupied? Do you know if values are rising or falling? How about which neighborhoods have the worst crime rates or the best schools? How about zoning, Associations, or easements that may affect your purchase? This information and endless other issues that can arise is just some of what you hope you Realtor can tackle
Realtors have access to information and use it because it’s the job description. They preview the MLS regularly and pay to belong to local, State, and National organizations that keep the most current and up-to-date information at their disposal. Because homes come on the market and go pending just as quickly, your Realtor has to stay plugged in. They have to know Plumbers, electricians, landscapers, repairman, Painters, Lenders, Title Reps, and how to get into the house. This information makes most any Realtor an invaluable part to any Buyer, Seller, or Investor’s network. It’s been said that “It’s not what you know, but who you know”, and when it comes to getting information about individual properties, market conditions, buying opportunities, or just local market updates, it’s a good idea to have a Realtor who’s got their pulse on the
market. Not to mention to call you fi rst on a great deal!
Well, that’s my story. So if you’re hoping to fi nd that dream home or jump on a nice investment opportunity or maybe you just need to be introduced to someone who can fi x your back deck... Whatever your need might be, make a friend of your local Realtor and send him a referral when you can; you never know when you’re going to need access to the wealth of information in the Realtor brain.
If you’d like to discuss owning or selling a home, call me directly; I’d love to discuss your choices. You can reach me directly at Ridgewater Real Estate Services, 9000 Brentwood Blvd, Brentwood, CA 94513 925-437-5831, or email me at: [email protected]

WHO’S BEEN SNOOPED?
Business of the YearIt is about 7:00 am and Cupid is nine days away from launching those infamous Valentine’s Day love arrows. The air is still, the sun is shining and the fog bank is lurking over the top of Mt. Diablo. My assignment this month comes to you from this wonderful place I call home, wrapped in love for dear friends and their endless journey to deliver quality service, results-oriented marketing and advertising designed to meet their clients objectives. I proudly present, the Monthly Grapevine.
In 1994, two decades ago, the fi rst 12 pages of Monthly Grapevine was born in home of Karen Spann, co-owner of our magazine. Her husband and business partner Jim, took a leave from his job at Lawrence Livermore Lab to sell ads for the fi rst addition. Karen’s love of publishing began when her grandfather brought her to his work, the Modesto Bee. After watching the paper zipping through the press, well, our publisher
was born. It is her joy and passion to help businesses, just like her Dad.
“Our magazine is unique and local.” Daughter and CEO, Sonya North, brings a vast amount of dedication and knowledge to help the community grow and prosper by partnering with our customers. “It’s where our heart is,” she tells us, with honesty and pride. Last year, Mom and Dad stepped back from the operation to spend more time with the family and the transition has been remarkable.
I ask you to take a moment to visit our entire issue, enjoying the fresh quality ads, informing articles and artistic graphic design delivering a crisp, new magazine to 64,170 homes & businesses every month and over 60 businesses drop locations. My favorite part is the cover, because it’s always so pretty. I can leave it out all month while utilizing its coupons and calendar of events updates from our local community and non-profi t organizations.
Now, go to the web, and join me as we visit the bigger world of the Monthly Grapevine. Click on Digital Magazine, CoCoCoupons, Digital Signage and, fi nally, Get Started Now! You will witness our magazine in it’s entirety appear before your eyes, while easy to manipulate between pages and articles. Coupons are

easy to print and there are plenty of them. We have also partnered with Harvest Park Bowl, where 34 screens deliver high quality ads to over 10,000 viewers per month. And fi nally, click Get Started to see all that we do to bring you the best quality magazine and award winning results for your business.
I have been writing this snoop since 1997. In those years, I have been able to visit local businesses and write about their entrepreneurial passion to be part of our economic structure. I have watched this community grow from 7,000 to over 50,000, enjoying the entire journey along the way. The Monthly Grapevine has continued to bring this family’s love to print, showcasing those incredible businesses who have withstood the test of recession, big box growth and our recent downturn in the economy while never losing sight of what our readers need and want for a local magazine. To this, my friends, I give you 20 gold ribbons for the 20 years you have dedicated your time, love and fi nancial support to our community; it has been a pleasure to be part of the journey. Who will be snooped next? It could be you!

GET YOURGARDEN GROWING
DIG was founded in June 1988 by Pat Moore. It started with a membership of about fourteen and has grown to one hundred at present. Members come from all over east county and elsewhere. Anyone is eligible to join and the dues are $15.00 per year.
Our purpose is to encourage interest in gardening through education and the beautification of the community. The mission of DIG is donating garden books, tapes and videos to the local library, providing scholarships to local students, hosting informational speakers and participating in the community gardening projects. Our annual fundraiser/plant sale consists of 10,000 plants. (Annuals and perennials, flowers, trees, herbs, tomatoes, cacti and succulents. These are all grown by the members propagating what we have planted.) For more information call Leslie Servin (925)634-4088 or [email protected].
