Wishing all of our residents at Delray Vil-las 4/5 and our vendors a w o n d e r f u l summer! See you in September…..

From the President Sy Weiss

From the Editor Linda Solomon

“Summer time, and the livin’ is easy.” DuBose

Heyward wrote those words to music George Gershwin composed for the folk opera, “Porgy and

Bess.” The irony of it all is that the folks in that

story, which was originally written by Heyward, all knew that summertime or wintertime, life was never easy. It certainly wasn’t easy for them in 1934 when

the music was composed and it isn’t any easier now.

Poor people work harder, sweat more, and die faster now just as they did then. So, where is the promise of the easier living, that elusive summertime? I think those of us who are for-tunate enough to winter in Florida and summer in any warm clime, who don’t have to worry about a

roof over our head or if there is enough milk money in the jar hidden in the kitchen pantry, have that easy summertime all the time. And while we thank our blessings, we should remember the child that will go to bed hungry no matter what the weather-man says; or the old woman whose pension has run out and is pooling her nickels and quarters to buy a can of cat tuna because it’s cheaper than the can for

human consumption; or we should think about the workers who will spend their lives in the blistering heat keeping our lawns trim and our shrubs present-able this summer most likely for minimum wage and/or the handout we offer. Let’s be grateful we can afford to live here in

Delray Villas Plat 4/5. There are many venues for our charity. We will continue to try to ease the sum-mer for others not so fortunate. We hope you will all do the same and stay healthy so that you may en-joy the living here this summer. Linda

IT’S JUNE AND THE START OF HURRICANE SEASON

Palm Beach County is exposed to many hazards, all of which have the potential to disrupt the community, cause damage, and inflict casualties. We have been very lucky the past few years. Take control by being prepared. When advised that a storm is coming do the following: • Fill your car’s gas tank. • Buy extra gas for your generator (start the gen-erator to make sure it works). • Make sure you have enough canned food to last at least one week for each member of your family. • Have at least 1 gallon of water per person per day. Fill your bath tub with water. • Have at least one non-electrical can opener. • Have enough medication for at least two weeks. • Have several flashlights and fresh batteries enough for two weeks. • Have a battery operated radio-TV set. • Have a well stocked first aid kit. • Have a cell phone and a car charger. • Have enough cash to last a week for your family. • Make copies of important documents you may need and seal them in a zip lock bag to include a copy of your home owners insurance. • Know where the closest hurricane shelters are located and which shelters take pets. • Know evacuation routes. • Give emergency phone numbers to love ones. • If vacating your home, take pictures of your be-longings and or video tape your home and its contents.

THIS MESSAGE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE DELRAY VILLAS VOLUNTEER CITIZEN OBSERVER PATROL, (C.O.P.) Unit # 16

I came across this quote and it rang so true for me. I share it with you all now as I bid you adieu for the summer! Linda Solomon

“You will never be completely at home again,

because part of your heart will always be else-where. That is the price you pay for the richness of loving and knowing people in more than one place.”

Talk of the Town by BOB TOWNSEND

Sharon’s Read submitted by SHARON O’HALLORAN

oming from Massachusetts where the winters are so torturous, I guess you’d expect that my

favorite part of the year is when “June is bustin’

out all over.” Not so. The problem I always had with June was Father’s

Day. Hold on! Before you start psycho-analyzing me and trying to determine my underlying problem with Father’s Day, take my word for it, it doesn’t go any

deeper than the fact that I never knew what to get my dad for the occasion. I mean, what do you get for a guy who has a rack full of ties and a drawer full of colognes (which he never used anyway) and doesn’t play golf,

skydive, frequent brothels or have any other hobbies that would lend themselves to gift giving? There was only one year that I had a stroke of genius and gave my father a gift that he actually liked and used. It was just about the time he retired. I gave him a police radio. From the day I gave it to him, he listened to it in the morning, in the afternoon and at night. But – wouldn’t you just know it? – about two weeks after Dad’s Day, the cops in Brockton, Massa-

chusetts (my home town) went to a system where they talked in code over the air waves. Being the investigative reporter that I was, how-ever, it took me about two days to obtain the code and give a copy of it to my dad so he would know where there was an accident, a break in progress or a domestic dispute. (I later learned that the radio code was the worst kept secret in Brockton and burglars, armed rob-bers and abusive husbands in the city possessed it about a day and a half before I had.) Anyhow, as I said, my dad listened to his police radio ALL OF THE TIME! The whole episode scared the stuffing out of me as far as the prospect of retiring was concerned. I mean, was it my destiny to sit and listen to Brockton’s finest nab shoplifters between trips

to Dunkin’ Donuts? Then I retired and came here. And got hit with stage four throat cancer. Before my first surgery on my neck, I asked my doctor if I’d be able to play tennis after the operation.

He assured me I could. I told him that was very strange because I never could play tennis before. Before my second surgery, I asked my doctor if I’d be able to bowl after the operation. He. . . well, you

know the rest.

C

So now the cancer is a thing of the past, I’m play-

ing tennis, bowling, going out to eat, occasionally spend-ing time at the pool or taking walks on the beach with my wife, Ronnie. It sure as hell beats listening to the police radio all day long. And, oh yeah, I’m writing a little bit, too.

Sharon is on vacation this month so here is a book report sub-mitted by Linda Solomon. It is the Barnes and Noble overview of the book, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. This editor is currently reading the book and enjoying it im-mensely. This is a moving story about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. “Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a per-fect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and fa-ther and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dan-

gerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge. Doerr’s ‘stunning sense of physical detail and

gorgeous metaphors’ (San Francisco Chronicle) are

dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another.

Alliance Happenings Judy La Corte

PLAT IV/V Ramblings. . . PAGE 8

The annual Alliance Breakfast for delegates, alternates and community presidents will be on Friday, June 5, 2015. Invitations are in the mail. AT&T Tech Rallies are still being conducted in the communities that request them. Contact Lori or Bob for available dates. The construction at the southwest corner of Atlantic Avenue and Powerline (Jog) Road is for a new Walgreens. When this new Walgreens opens, the store front in the Oriole/Publix plaza will close. PALM BEACH COUNTY SHERIFF'’S OF-

FICE: The ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Sheriff's Sub-Station on Cumberland and West At-lantic Avenue was held Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 10 AM and it is now open to the public. There are still many car and resident burglaries and scams to watch out for. We must observe traf-fic signals and stop signs as our area is busier than ever. FIRE RESCUE: Battalion Chief Rich Ellis in-formed us that they will be dispatching vehicles from the City of Delray Beach if it will mean a faster response to an emergency call. STATE SENATOR MARIA SACHS addressed the group and explained how the early ending of the 2015 Legislative Session by the Florida House was determined to be unconstitutional and they expect to have a special session beginning on June 1, 2015 to further work on this year’s legisla-

tion. STATE REPRESENTATIVE KEVIN RADER told us this is the first year we didn't pass the budget which takes effect July 1. The Senate pro-vided the House with a plan to expand Medicaid to insure the working poor, but the House is unwill-ing to compromise. House leadership has sent sev-eral offers to the Senate, but none include Medi-caid Expansion. COMMISSIONER/VICE MAYOR: Mary Lou Berger informed us that the traffic light on West Atlantic Avenue, at the entrance to the Lexington Club Community, has been installed and is flash-ing now but it will be operating on May 12.

The next traffic light to be installed will be on West Atlantic Avenue and Sims Road. Next week the County Commission will be interviewing and selecting a new County Administrator as Bob Weisman is leaving after many years of service. A Purple bus will be launched on Memorial Day through Veterans’ Day honoring Purple Heart Vet-

erans. It will also offer information for Veterans and spouses of Veterans on benefits offered to them. State Attorney Dave Aronberg and Executive Director PBC Division on Ethics, Steve Cullen, told us how Palm Beach County investigates and how the State Attorney processes Ethics Viola-tions. We were once known as the Corruption County, but now we have the toughest Code of Ethics since our Ethics Inspector General is in charge. Steve Cullen distributed cards with “Top

Ten Ethics Rules” which include Gifts, Use of Of-

ficial Position, Outside Employment and Voting Conflicts.
