Central Line Dressing Change

Central Line Dressing Change Trays Central Lines and their special care require an elevated attention todetail. This results in additional time necessary to properly changethese dressings so that the risk of infection is minimized. MPTsstreamline this process to reduce wasted time and componentry.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announcedthat Medicare will no longer reimburse hospitals for vascular catheter- associated infections. The provision is effective October 1, 2008. The ruling halts the practice of hospitals receiving higher payments for costs associated with treating patients with hospital-acquired conditions (HACs).The directive prevents hospitals from billing patients for HACs as well.1

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that thereare 248,678 central line-associated bloodstream infections per year. Theseinfections are both high cost and high volume. Although generallypreventable, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) estimates thatof those people affected approximately 14,000 will die every year from central line-related bloodstream infections.2
