Gloves help prevent the transmission of pathogens by direct and indirect contact. Nurses apply sterile gloves before performing sterile procedures such as inserting urinary catheters, changing dressing on central IV catheters, or applying sterile dressing.

DELEGATION CONCIDERATIONS

The skill applying and removing sterile gloves can be delegated to assistive personel. However, many procedures that require the use of sterile glove cannot be delegated to assistive personel.

Glove applicationa. Perform through hand hygiene

b. Remove outher glove packpage wrapper by carefully separating and peeling apart sides

c. Graps inner packpage, and lay it on clean, dry, flat surface at waist level. Open packpage, keeping gloves on wrapper’s inside surface

d. Identify right and left glove. Each glove has a as approximately 5 cm (2 inches) wide. Glove dominant hand first.

e. With thumb and first two fingers of dominant hand, graps edge of cuff of glove for dominant hand.

f. Carefully pull glove over dominant hand, leaving cuff and being sure cuff does not roll up wrist. Be sure thumb and fingers are improper spaces.

g. With gloved dominant hand, slip fingers underneath second glove’s cuff

h. Carefully pull second glove over non dominant hand

i. After second glove is on, interlock hand together above waist lever. The cuffs usually fall down after application. Be sure to touch only sterile side.

Glove disposal

a. Graps outside of one cuff with other gloved hand; avoid touching wrist.

b. Pull glove off turning in inside out. Discard in receptacle.

c. Take fingers of bare hand and tuck inside remaining glove cuff peel glove of inside out. Discard in receptacle.

d. Perform through hand hygiene.
