This is the secondtime we have heldour HoteliersEuropeanMarketplace inSpain. It is entirelyfitting that we do so

in Seville. Inbound leisure tourism sells theservice economy of a destination: theattractions, restaurants and shops thatanimate a city. These, together with thehotels, attract visitors. And what visitorsrequire is that these should be bothexcellent and different.

In these qualities Seville is outstanding: atwo thousand year history manifest in thebuilt environment, a vibrant culture andrenowned cuisines. These features are theproduct of the inhabitants: visitors come toappreciate and sustain them.

This city welcomesthis importantworkshop for thetourism sector withtrue enthusiasm.We have alwaysbeen convinced that

connecting the Seville Tourism Board withETOA (European tourism association)would become an enormous benefit for thetourism industry, not only in our city, butthroughout the whole region.

The celebration of the long-awaited HEMworkshop (Hoteliers EuropeanMarketplace) is a clear example of this.

Hosting this year’s HEM, Europe’s mainaccommodation contracting event,represents an opportunity for true growthin the hotel sector and for tour operations,and of course an opportunity for thedevelopment in both the private and local spheres.

The fact that ETOA has chosen Seville as abase for reflection, work and reference ofbest practices and solutions is a guaranteeof success, as we will have among us theofficial tourist representation before theEuropean Parliament, and the main

institution in charge of the developmentand improvement of urban touristdestinations.

Seville has been working on this platformsince 2012, along with other touristdestinations, airlines and transportcompanies, including tour operators,hotels, restaurants and cruise lines. Therecent breakthroughs in the developmentof Seville tourist industry are one of myproudest moments during my tenure asMayor of the city.

Seville has made the development ofcultural tourism and heritage a basiceconomic axis, also achieving an exemplaryseasonal and geographical diversification. Being part of ETOA, and the celebration of

events such as this HEM, represents anopportunity to improve and develop ourtourism sector, not only at a local level, asthis event will have an impact on ourbusiness environment and will surelyattract investment, but also at a higherlevel, on a European scale.

The tourism revolution we are living today- managed with sustainable, qualitativestrategies while building consensus withthe local population - represents one of themost positive sides of globalisation. It is also a great way of strengthening ourEuropean identity and improvingcontinental cohesion.

I also would like to take the opportunitythat ETOA and this HEM workshop offer toinvite each and every one of thoseattending the congress to enjoy our cityduring their stay there.

I am sure that our vibrant cultural offer, ourworld class heritage and our zest for lifewill not disappoint you.
