A Picture of Courage
The uncertainties of farming where terrorist activities are
heavy had broughtabout the decision. The truck was^ loaded with the
household goods, personal items, furniture and the other things
accumulated during the years of living in one place. The husband was
driving the truck. Behind him came his family.. They were driving -
thefamily car also loaded with odds and ends for the move to
karoi.
As they pulled out of their driveway onto the farm road, it
happened. Automaticrifle fire came from the side of the road. They
had let the truck pass unmolested andhad fired on the car. All of
them were hit immediately. Jenny, the wife was shot inthe face
knocking most of her teeth out and causing a hole in her cheek.
Sarena, the12 year old daughter, was shot in the foot. Loftus, the
boy, younger than Sarena, wasshot through the leg. The Car left the
road and landed in the ditch. The unbearablenoise of the firing
continued as the terrorists began to close in to finish the job
ofdestruction they had started.
Sarena picked up the small caliber pistor and began firing in
the direction ofthe attack. She emptied the gun in a short time.
The terrorists heard the returnfire and stopped their attack. They
became afraid and all ran away in a panic, leaving behind much of
their supplies.
Jenny spent several weeks in the hospital recovering from her
wounds. When wefirst met her, she did not talk much. Her jaw was
frozen shut from the devastation toher face. After listening to a .
tape of a sermon from the book of James, she said,"Everybody has
trouble with their tongue, even me. Here I am with half of my
tongueshot away and still it is naughty
Jenny Versfeld is now in the Salisbury Hospital undergoing
plastic surgery. Shemixes freely with the wounded soldiers giving
them inspiration to carry on. She feelsquite unhindered in her
specialized ministry since she is not bothered by being abeautiful
young thing that would cause the boys to be ill at ease. But she
became upset one day and was giving her doctor a lot of lip, until
they persuaded her to have apedicure to lift her spirits. Now she
says she has a broken face, a scarred body, butthe most beautiful
feet in the hospital. Jenny Versfeld is a picture of courage herein
Rhodesia. She attends the Karoi Christian Fellowship Church
whenever she is able.Could you spare a few minutes today to pray
for Jenny?

Bible Studies
Since travel out in the farming areas is limited to daytime, we
find that it isdifficult to contact new people and to visit them at
the farms. So we have encouragedarea Bible Studies where we could
meet new people who are invited by those living inthe immediate
vicinity. This has proven to he an effective method of spreading
God'sWord. On Monday nights we will have the Bible Study in the
Village of Karoi, usuallymeeting at the Dan O'Connor's home. We
average between 8 and 14 in attendance. Weare studying through the
Book of Ist Corinthians.
Then on Tuesday night we go to the Tengwe Farming Area to a new
study where weare going through the first 11 chapters of the Book
of Genesis. The family who hasorganized this study was attending
the Monday night study in Karoi. Now we have 8 whoare meeting in
various homes in Tengwe. We meet early in the evening, have supper,
doour study, then we all sleep there until early morning.
On Wednesday morning Carolyn's Women's Bible Study is also held
in the varioushomes in Tengwe Area, She has an average of 7 who
attend. While Carolyn is in Salisbury waiting'Tor the birth of our
baby / one of-the women will lead thisstudy.Theyare studying 1st
and 2nd Peter at this time.
Then on Thursday morning another newly organized women's study
is meeting in theMiami Farming Area and I am leading this study in
the doctrinal approach of "How tobecome a Christian." We average 9,
with S of the women having never been to theChurch services in
Karoi. I had never met them before although I knew who they
were.

Dear Friends in Christ,
1919,
THE BILL DELAUGHTSR FAMILYBox 61
Karoi, Zimbabwe-'RhodesiaSeptember 1979
AT THE BREAKFAST TABLE seems to be the only time that our family
is able to havedaily devotions. One morning after reading from the
Bible about the beautiful thingsthat God has made, Billy spoke up
and said, "I know of something beautiful that Godhas mademy little
brother David."' The two get along very well and when Billy is
inthe rooin, David will not listen nor look at anyone else. At 4
months, David weighsabout 14 pounds and is 26h" long. He's been
sleeping through the night since twomonths. Folks call him "Smiley"
because he is so happy and sweet. Billy has grown2" since January.
He was the farmer in the school play "Little Red Hen."
THE KAROI CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP CHURCH at their last monthly
Men's meeting de~-j^ided-ta set -u-p a-commi ttee to .look.-into
building ^an.-addi tion to .an existing-abolu-tlon.building. This
addition has become necessary because of the Bible School that
Carolynteaches on the open porch or in the yard, while the
preaching services are going on.All of the younger children go out
to her and are taught on their level. Ena DaSilvais now assisting
Carolyn with this project. On one Sunday there were 20 children
ofall ages. With the coming of the rainy season, it will be
important to at least havea roof overhead. The men here have faith
in their Lord and in the future of this newcountry of
Zimbabwe-Rhodesia.
WE PLANNED FOR A RECORD ATTENDANCE on the first Sunday of July,
but when peoplefound out that Ivan Martin, fellow missionary from
Sinoia was to be here the Sundaybefore that, 49 came to hear his
sermon from the Word and in song. On July 1st whenDale Marshall,
the man who started this congregation, was to be here, the people
beganto arrive early. Every chair was filled, some of the children
were on the floor atthe back with 69 people here. When we first
came to Karoi the attendance had droppedbecause of terrorist
activity to a low of 9, now we average over 30 every Sunday. For
this we give PRAISE TO THE LORD.
AFTER STRUGGLING WITH A FULL COMMITMENT to Christ for'the past 4
years,. EnaDaSilva decided to obey this command of Jesus' as well
as the others He taught. Shehad been christened as a baby and
confirmed as a teenager but now as an adult, shegave her llfe-to
Christ in the way the -Scriptures command. Her husband, Mendo,
isconsidering the same thing, so please pray for him as he
considers this most importantstep. Working with Internam Affairs,
Mendo commands the auxiliary forces in this area.
TWO FARI-IS HAVE BEEN ATTACKED THIS MONTH north of Karoi. I have
visited In. bothof these homes. The Wllcox family were asleep when
3 rockets were shot into theSrbedroom. Though they had not attended
Church services anywhere recently, thisbrought them to their knees.
They are now coming regularly. Jean also comes to ourBible Study
held in this area. The Jim Barker family had many mortars fired at
theirhouse and Jim fired his own back at them. Judy also comes to
our Bible Study heldclose by. Please pray for them.
WHEN THE TERRORISTS COME into the farming area from the Tribal
Trust Lands, theypass right through Fred Mitchell's farm. So far
they have not attacked Fred's farm. But we petition your prayers for
continued protection for this family who are sofaithful in the work
of the church.
KEN EVA, A YOUNG FARMER who worships with us, was on patrol
while on call-up withthe^ Police Anto Terrorist Unit (P.A.T.U.) and
was shot through the chest and the leg.Prlscilla, his wife, was
spending the night with- us when the call came. I drove
theambulance the 120 miles into Salisbury. Ken is recovering from
his bout with deathand Is home from-the hospital on crutches.
L.ioiiel, his son stayed with us while hisdaddy'was in hospital. He
is in Billy's class at school and one of Billy's bestfriends. Ken
and Prlscilla ask your prayers for their future as Christians and
as
.farmers.
WE NOW HAVE 5 BIBLE STUDIES PER WEEK with an average attendance
of more than 20each'week. We had a high In one week of 40--praise
the Lord. Carolyn leads a studyfor women. Bill leads the rest. The
studies are varied, covering from "How To Becomea Christian"1st
Corinthiansand we will soon begin a study of the book of
Daniel.
