Like all Mark’s builds it displays excellent workmanship, crisp paint and markings, and subtle weathering. Congratulations, Mark! Below, Mark provides a brief description of his experience with the model... This model is from Dragon/DML in 1/48 scale. I always loved the Fokker Dr. 1 thanks to the Red Baron (stupid Snoopy). The Fokker triplane is the only World War I aircraft in my collection. The main reason is that it has very little rigging. I hate sewing and rigging is too close to sewing for me. I originally wanted to paint the plane to represent Werner Voss’s aircraft. Eventually, I decided to make up my own by combining several different schemes. Not having a lot of reference material, I wasn’t sure how to represent the streaky dope finish of the plane. I ended up using thinned down acrylics over an enamel base. It took me at least 3 tries to get the black and white pattern on the horizontal stabilizer correct. Other challenges were dealing with the photo-etched machine gun jackets. As well as difficult to follow instructions. Maybe someday before my eyesight goes I’ll build some more WW1 aircraft. I have a desire to build Siemens Schuckert with a wood grain fuselage. n MORE PHOTOS on page 11

Presidents’ Corner by Paul Tomczak
it is certainly a lot like spring around here. the temperature is getting warmer, clocks have changed and soon it will be time for yard work. that definitely reduces my time at the bench!
lately i have been in a bit of a rut and have been unable to finish any builds. I put away my build for the First and last theme. I just lost interest in the model – so back to the shelf of doom with that one! luckily there was an empty spot there. this got me thinking about what to do when you want to reset. For me I usually do 2 things...I clear my bench, clean it up and get my tools ready. second I pick an easy build model that I can do quickly. usually a small 1/72 WWII fighter like a spitfire or me-109. Its finishing that model that gets me going again.
as far as getting my theme build done, I am well on the way with my second choice build. as I write this chrome yellow is about to be painted on the wings. that’s all the clues I will give. and pardon the misspellings, but I am shaking the paint as I type this...
See you on april Fools day with your First or last build.

Time Capsule Triplane
John Bell’sFokker Dr-I by John Goschke
it’s easy to see when looking at mark Webb’s fine Fokker triplane how far our hobby has come. Dml’s kit is finely detailed and today we have any number of authentic paint colors, decals, and reference sources. but what makes mark’s model
really special is his high level of craftsmanship.Back in the early days of the hobby modelers weren’t
quite as lucky to have so many options to choose from. but then, as now, a high level of craftsmanship could result in a great looking model from those early, basic kits.John Bell was one of the early members of DVsm. he
got his start carving and building solid wood models in the 1930s, and started building plastic kits in the 1950s. he built this aurora 1/48 Dr-I when the kit first came out in the mid-’50s. the paint is enamel applied with a brush and shows virtually no brush marks. the fuselage seams are nearly invisible. there are many subtle detail painting touches when the model is closely examined, including the wood-grained prop and the carefully painted instruments.John Bell was a veteran of the Eighth air Force in
WWII and an engineer at boeing-Vertol. he passed away in 1999. It is my privilege to have this model, built by a man whose character and talent I admired, in my collection. n
