III JoRNADAS DE ARTEFLAMENCo DE PLAMPLoNA

Flamenco on Fire counts on the assistance of the Navarra Gipsy Association Gaz Kaló, which together with obra Social la Caixa and Fundación Caja Navarra (local savings banks’ socio-cultural entities) will showcase, among the activities included in the Festival, several shows designed to raise awareness of maestro Sabicas and to pay tribute to great Juan Habichuela. These cultural days are aimed at bringing closer the flamenco art to assorted audiences from Navarra as well as flamenco lovers from other locations, opening up new paths to social inclusion for the gipsy community and promoting interest for flamenco through culture.

once again, obra Social “la Caixa” and Fundación Caja Navarra join forces in favor of the culture of Navarra, sharing the common goal of getting culture closer to all social groups, particularly those more vulnerable, and supporting initiatives that benefit intercultural coexistence. The Flamenco on Fire festival counts on resources provided by both foundations which share the goal of taking advantage of the great potential of music and dance as communication elements by bringing a social dimension to the festival able to maximize its cultural and also social impact.

‘Baile jondo, recollection of the human beauty’Antonio Parra

Flamenco dancing, as we know it today, is relatively new and it was born from a mix between educated and popular. It developed during the XIX century at the Candil dances and the singing coffee places. This lecture presents a tour through its history and the ritual aspects, which make it unique and special, and it also outlines a theory about the “duende”.

Antonio Parra is a professor at the Journalism College at the Universidad de Murcia. He is also an author and journalists; flamenco critic at El Pais newspaper and in other media. Formerly, he was director or the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas and he is currently director of the Cumbre Flamenca de Murcia.

Agustín Castellón Campos (Born March 16, Pamplona, Spain - New York, NY, U.S.A, April 14, 1990), also known as Sabicas. He was a Spanish guitarist, considered Maestro and prime mover of its internationalization.

The fusion of flamenco with other musical trends is the result of this internationalization. In this roundtable participants will discuss Maestro Sabica´s life, music and career. This is a small tribute to the Maestro, whose memory is for the third year in a row the main subject of the Flamenco on Fire festival.

‘Agujetas, Cantaor’Dominique Abel

He softens affliction and loneliness with sass. His insolence is what helps him resist, what gives him, against all odds, that impertinent joy that some hate and some others consider irritating. He shouts his own truth and, surprisingly, this is extremely coherent with his life. Such independence is extraordinary. He does not make a distinction between singing and living and this is mirrored in his loyal attitude and his strength. If he lived just as the rest of us, he could not sign the way he does, with such rage. He would lose the stunning fury of his signing which hurts and heals at the same time.

There I find my own retreat and my relinquishment occurs as a miracle in his presence. our souls smile in the darkness, with our hands laced in secret. I do not have anything but the essential, the vital and I become a child again or I feel like an elderly woman. I no longer have any age, I´m nowhere but in that moment itself. At last, free from formal, restrictive judgments that confuse ego with self-government. Finally! Someone to get along with. Am I bothered by the strength of his ego? on the contrary! I am at ease! I wish there were more “egos” like his, completely opposite to thirst for recognition, just full of themselves, of their private wealth, of the passion with what they live everything. And, if as a result we get some works, these are just the consequences of that internal profusion, of so much personality and unconventionality.

‘Flamenco without borders’Filippo Ciardi

The feeling of a living art, by word of mouth of its main characters. Flamenco sin Fronteras is an independent documentary film that showcases the deepest feelings of today´s flamenco. A great painting with different brushstrokes, a chorus movie in which over 40 characters, using live music and personal life´s testimony, explain how they perceive the flamenco world, always in constant tension between ancient roots and current reality.

The documentary also shows a discovery journey made of intense gatherings from Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz, Seville and other cities and nearby small towns to a trip to Pamplona to attend the Flamenco on Fire festival. The artists, fans from Andalucía, Spain and abroad reveal themselves in several environments and atmospheres that range from the Jerez festival and the Fiesta de la Buleria to more private places and several seasons through the year, showing how flamenco is a live art with no borders.

‘Working progress. Flamenco On Fire’Joaquín Calderón

‘Flamenco on fire’ is a documentary movie directed by Joaquín Calderón and produced by Arquetipo Comunicación in cooperation with Navarra de Cine. This project was born as a result of the flamenco festival of the same name that has been taking place in Pamplona - Iruña during the month of August for the last three years. The idea of creating a documentary with the performances showcased at the festival and including interviews with the great flamenco figures that participate started during the first season in 2014.

At the beginning it was supposed to be a movie created to pay tribute to Sabicas. During its production design and when some interviews were shot, the team realized that there was a lot more to tell around the main initial idea. Thus, after some research and several testimonies, the documentary will deal with several subjects related to the flamenco world, including:

-A history tour, from its inception to its current situation, looking at its dev elopment through the years.-The gypsy´s culture and its origins are underlined given the key role of the gypsy race in the development of flamenco in the World.-It also shows the influence of flamenco in the World. ‘Flamenco on Fire’ has become a larger project than originally planned and aims at becoming an international project- .

‘Herencia Flamenca’Michael Meert

‘Herencia Flamenca’ can be considerd the life journal of the Carmona saga, under the guidelines of Michael Meert, producer of documentaries about Paco de Lucía or Pablo Casals. It is a practical guide to monitor the development of an important part of the flamenco traditions, from the Sacromonte caves to Madrid.

Lucas has grown up with the flamenco beat and when he was 9 he was already an excellent singer. We should not forget that his grandfather is Juan Habichuela, who, at this same age, was already working in bars and pubs to support his family during rough times for the gypsies.

When he was 17, the patriarch of the Carmona´s moved from Granada to Madrid to settle down and to try his luck. In time, he became one of the most solicited flamenco guitarist in the capital city. While he was traveling around the World, his brother Pepe remained in Spain replacing him and taking care of his children Juan and Antonio who, some time later, together with their cousin Jose Miguel, Pepe´s son, would set up Ketama in 1986. The family tradition continues with the new generations and, every night at the family household you can find stomp, cajon, guitars and dance.

FLAMENCO FOR THE CHILDREN

| SUNDAY 28 |

| BALUARTE | | 11:00 h |

‘La nube viajera’Flamenquillos

This show consists on the development of a tale that we have created in which a cloud, comparing the process to generate rain and the birth of flamenco, explains its adventures lived during its trips around the world. From India to Egypt, it visits many other places from where it collects assorted melodies and rhythms. Finally these, when they arrive to Andalucia, get mixed with the local music and transform its rain into “El Flamenco”. The cloud, which is the main character, is performed by a singer-dancer who during the show uses in her conversations with another character, who is also a singer-dancer, although more earthly, popular children songs from the CD “Flamenquillos” (Karonte Records), that most children and parents are familiar with.

This way it shows in a very natural and easy way the most basic beats (“palos”) and their geographic origin, that the cloud has collected to share with many and amusing stories. The 5 musicians that also share the stage perform the songs, apart from these two artists. At the end the lesson that the cloud wants to transmit is that, in order to allow flamenco to keep on expanding and progressing we have to keep on playing and singing and living it because from this music we will obtain the water that when evaporated will fill the clouds again with music so that it can rain music again. This way, the flamenco and the music will continue to evolve and the process will last forever. We will always be able to enjoy the rain of music and flamenco.
