LOGOA bird’s eye view.. India has emerged as a large defence market. It has been a centre

of economic activity, a beacon of democracy, a bastion of stability and a champion of peaceful co-existence and non-violence.

. India has striven to give its neighbours stakes in its own growth, through trade, investment and services to secure a peaceful periphery. At the same time, it continues to take all measures for the security and safety of all its citizens.

The country' defence services include three Armed Forces: (i.e., the Army, the Navy and the Air Force) and other Departments, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Defence Ordnance Factories.

Page 4: Defence_Industry

LOGOCont...DRDO: Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was formed in

1958 from the amalgamation of Technical Development Establishment (TDEs) of the Indian Army and the Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTDP) with the Defence Science Organisation (DSO). DRDO has grown multi-dimensionally and emerged as a strong and mature organisation with a vast network of more than 50 laboratories, spread across the country. The organisation is dedicated towards progressive enhancement of self reliance in defence systems and also enhancement of R&D infrastructure and capability of the country.

Defence Ordnance Factories: Indian Ordnance Factories is a conglomerate of 40 Factories, 9 Training

Institutes, 3 Regional Marketing Centres and 4 Regional Controller of Safety. This is the largest and oldest departmentally run production organisation in the country. It is primarily engaged in the manufacture of defence hardware for the Armed forces. The ordnance factories were established with a mandate to ensure self-reliance in manufacturing of defence hardware.

LOGOCont.. Overview of defence spending in India : Since India's first defence budget for 1950-51 of US$ 34.78 million,

spending has grown to US$ 30.68 billion in 2009-10.Of this, approximately 40% relates to capital expenditure which is currently driven by equipment modernisation programmes in each of the three Services (Army, Navy and Air force).

As a percentage of GDP, India has been able to maintain defence expenditure to a range of 2 to 3 %, in line with other major developed nations, signifying a fairly steady focus on defence within the economy to date.
