Jerry Rotonda, Gary Jablonski, Howard Mintz and Mark Leinkram took a leap of faith and poured their love for and into Bum Rogers Crabhouse & Tavern, a restaurant that had been submerged in 20

inches of water after Hurricane Sandy, to breathe life back into the landmark seashore eatery that had served patrons of the Jersey Shore for over 40 years. Rotonda and Jablonski serve as the restaurant’s operating partners with Mintz and Leinkram as partners in the business. “I’ve always loved going to Bum Rogers,” Rotundo states eagerly. “My partners and I had wanted to buy it for years.” Jerry has been involved in the restaurant business since the 1970s, designing, building and managing a number of Jersey Shore eateries and night club businesses, including the Blue Grotto, Baby O, Temptations and Panache, all in Seaside Heights, and Polo Club in Neptune, among other venues. He also managed a series of chain restaurants in the area for 15 years. The deal to purchase Bum Rogers did not come to fruition however, until after Hurricane Sandy destroyed so many Jersey Shore properties. The partners bought the restaurant on March 8, 2013. They gutted it “down to the studs,” dried it out, treated it for mold and restored the decades-old business. The four friends came together to restore Bum Rogers to its former glory and in the process, did their part to restore the shore. “Bum Rogers has the same configuration, the same ambience and great food, of course,” Rotonda notes, adding that the restaurant had been in need of a “facelift” and all the upgrades the new owners gave it, including new walls and floors, a new kitchen, new bars and new bathrooms, among other improvements. They provided a fresh start to a long-time business that Jerry says had, “fallen into disrepair” over the years. Bum Rogers, now open all-year round, offers four seating areas for dining, including a main barroom with over 20 TVs for game viewing and cheering on your favorite sports team as you sit on bar stools or at high top tables or booths.

A full dining room with tables and chairs and booths is also available for a more intimate dining experience, while a back bar area with more TVs, booths and bar stool seating is also a choice. An outdoor patio and bar have been added where patrons may enjoy dining al fresco in the warmer months. The eatery, decked out in a nautical theme with wainscoting and “old time” photographs lining the walls, exudes a special summer “beach feel,” even in winter. And now, with the restaurant serving patrons all year long, folks will not have to wait until the warm weather to experience the scrumptious dishes prepared here. Bum Rogers Crabhouse, which specializes in a selection of crabs and seafood, among other menu selections, offers its “Jersey Shore Blue Claws” crabs prepared and served five different ways, including its famous and most popular selection, “Garlic Crabs.” The menu also features the “Mulberry Street Fried Combo,” deep fried crab balls, shrimp and calamari. Diners can also enjoy “Zuppa de Pesce” with scallops, shrimp, calamari, mussels and pan-seared fish. Or, treat yourself to the “Jersey Shore Thing,” which offers whole lobster, garlic crabs and Old-Bay shrimp with red potatoes and corn.And Bum Rogers always offers fresh and juicy eight-ounce Angus burgers served in a variety of ways, such as topped with mushrooms or fried onions. Enjoy an extended Happy Hour here which takes place every day from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and where drink specials are on tap. And don’t forget to save room for a divine dessert such as a gluten-free

flourless chocolate torte or choose from a selection of

homemade cheesecakes for a sweet delicious ending to your meal. Sunset Dinner specials are on tap for those 55 and over, every day from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a 20 percent discount off the menu prices. Families are always welcome here at Bum Rogers and are best served during the early dinner hours, for after the lights go down, the music kicks up. Patrons can choose from a full drink menu, along with 32 beers on draft and a great section of the best craft beers and seasonal specialties. Also available are 30 various wines by

the glass. Gary Philips comes from a very musically inclined family, so it’s no surprise he has spent his life jamming for a living. His mother was in a band playing clarinet

and saxophone in the 1940s and his father played the trombone. Other members of his family included a trumpet player, guitarist and opera singer; growing up, Saturday nights were spent around the TV watching “The Lawrence Welk Show” and “Sing Along With Mitch.”

OneofPhilips’firstbigmusicalinfluencesbesides his family was the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, and as he grew older he became a huge fan of The Beatles, Harry Chapin, John Denver and Jimmy Buffett.

He now plays around New Jersey, passing out feel-good vibes with his popular style of “trop rock”, a mixture of beach music and country with a good amount of Jimmy Buffett thrown in. It’s easy going, comforting and perfect for those relaxing summer nights at the shore. “The real essence of it is the lyrics and just that kind of easy laid-back feeling,”

Philips describes. “Sitting by the beach having a cold drink and the palm trees and the ocean so that’s really what trop rock is all about, it’s a state of mind.”

Primarily an acoustic guitarist, Philips also throws in the ukulele from time to time and is also learning the steel drum

and mandolin. He has also performed on the banjo, saxophone and trombone in the past. He’ll typically throw the ukulele into his act more when he’s playing a wedding or cocktail hour than at a bar, but you can still expect to see it on occasion regardless of the setting.

Philips plays all over New Jersey including the various MJ’s, Buckalews Restaurant and Tavern in Beach Haven, Zachary’s Restaurant in Long Branch, Jack’s Tavern in Belmar and Klee’s Bar and Grill in Seaside Heights,

to name just a few. And aside from playing around New Jersey, Philips also brings his act to Key West once a year, playing in various bars and parties as he makes his way down the islands.

Although a beach-themed performer such as Philips does take a slight hit during the winter, he still manages to play two to three shows a week. But in the summer, Philips performs nearly every day. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day this past summer he performed over 100 times, routinely playing seven nights a week. And his catalogue is huge as he can easily play a

four-hour show and not hit the same artist twice.

Philips has been recognized for his work in recent years as his song, “No More Everyday Blues,” was nominated for song of the year in 2012 for the Jersey Acoustic Music Awards, as was Philips himself for male vocalist of the year. Additionally, his song, “Living The Life Of A Beach Bum,” was nominated for song of the year on BeachfrontRadio.com. He regards those nominations as an honor and one of his career highlights. Other highlights include performing with some of his favorite musicians, including Harry Chapin, Don McLean and Doyle Grisham.

Philips’ career has been all about entertaining people and making them feel good, but he goes even further than just his music. He is a big believer in giving back to

the community and works diligently to raise money for charity. He works with Holiday Express in the winter and had given a lot of time and effort to Sandy Relief. He’s even a member of the Coastal Jersey Parrot Head Club, an organization that follows Jimmy Buffett and whose mantra is party with a purpose. “Anytime we do anything, it’s to raise money,” he emphasizes. “We had a meeting the other night that I played at and we raised money for one of the local food pantries. Next month we’re doing toys for tots,” Philips said. “Everything we do with the organization is to help people out and that’s really what it’s all about. I enjoy helping people out; I do as much as I possibly can. I’ve been lucky to be able to perform for people and give that way and it’s worked out pretty well.”

Amanda Feehanby CLARE MARIE CELANO

Amanda Feehan sees herself working in the medical field of sonography but for now, working as bartender at MJ’s at Buttonwood in Matawan, provides her with a good living, work she enjoys and is paving the way for her future. Feehan says that even once she secures employment in the medical field she will “never” retire her bartending skills. “It’s a great job,” Feehan emphasizes. “It allows me to work with people. You work hard and the day goes faster as you move. I’ve never been one to sit at a desk.” She likes the pace of bartending and loves the regular interaction with her customers. Feehan adds that bartending provides the environment and the atmosphere she needs, which involves

the crowd, the excitement, the music and the pumped up energy. “With bartending you never have the same day twice,” she remarks. Amanda began working in the restaurant industry as hostess then moved to a job as bartender. “I didn’t think I could do it,” she says. “I thought I was way too shy but the manager convinced me I could do it. I tried it and loved it.” She’s tended bar at 7 Days in Union Beach and then at Katshack in Matawan. She said those venues closed and that she has been very lucky to find another job so quickly. “When one door closes, another opens,” she muses. Working at MJs, she notes, is very different from the cozy tavern-style bars she had worked at previously, with its large dining rooms, banquet hall and its different clientele. It also required Feehan to learn something she had not had experience with before - c o m p u t e r i z e d orders. “No more tab orders. It was

completely new to me but I learned the system.

I was so nervous when I first started to learn it,” she laughs. “I’m not a computer person, but learning the POS technology does make the job easier.”

2. On a cocktail sword, spear cherry first, then spear orange slice through the peel. Hang sword from the rim of the glass, so that fruit is in the drink.

INGREDIENTS:2 cups white sugar 7 cups water 2 tablespoons instant tea powder 1 (12 fluid ounce) can frozen orange juice concentrate 1 (12 fluid ounce) can frozen lemonade concentrate 2 cups cold water 2 cups vodka 1 liter lemon-lime flavored carbonated beverage

PREPARATION:1. In a 6 quart pot combine sugar and 7 cups water. Bring to boil and stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat. Stir in tea powder while hot. Add orange juice concentrate, lemonade concentrate and 2 cups cold water. Chill in refrigerator.

2. When cold mix in vodka. Pour into a plastic container leaving room on top for expansion. Freeze or 24 hours.3. To serve, scoop about 1 cup into a tall glass and quickly stir in 1/3 cup lemon-lime soda.

PREPARATION:In a gallon pitcher prepare the lemonade concentrate according

to package instructions, replacing one can of water with the vodka. Squeeze juice from one lime into mixture. Pour over ice and serve.

The Vodka Revolution Take a look at the colorful glass-art wonderland on display behind the bartender. An impressive graphic presentation of frosted bottles with hi-def cutout art will frequently draw the curious eye. Looking more closely, you will notice flavors of such exotic blends, the desire to try them is compelling: Van Gogh Acai-Blueberry, Belvedere Mango Passion and Belvedere Pink Grapefruit, Hanson of Sonoma Organic Ginger, Liquorizh Peanut Butter, just to name a very few.

Dizzying? …. Yes. And, vodka brands continue the trend -- and your bartenders are likely happy to use them as a base to whip up beguiling new cocktails.

According to the Gin & Vodka Association (ginvodka.org), in the US, vodka has become the backbone of the spirits industry, accounting for 32% of all volumes. In 2012, 65.2 million 9-liter cases of vodka were sold in the United States, generating $5.5 billion in revenue for distillers. An important growth driver has been the continued popularity of flavored vodkas which have grown by 19% in 2012 and now account for around 21% of all vodkas sold. Over 150 new flavors or line extensions have been introduced in recent years.

Although the alcoholic beverage has been consumed for hundreds of years in Eastern Europe (primarily in Russia and Poland), it was brought to the US only in the earlier part of the 1900s. It was not until the 1960s and 1970s when it became a popular libation of choice -- think the “Mad Men” era and the “three-martini lunch.”

Cocktailtimes.com’s article, “History of Vodka,” explains, “With a more affluent younger generation and a generally more relaxed lifestyle and the emphasis on adventure and experimentation - vodka’s mixability led to its huge and ever rising popularity. Vodka cocktails are now more numerous than those of gin and are seen in the same exclusive circles and stylish bars the world over.”

because vodka is “the ultimate chameleon spirit. Its versatility continues to keep it relevant as the foundation for everything from hand-crafted mixology to simple, everyday cocktailing.”

The vodka business, Butkus observes, is much more competitive than it was 10 and 20 years ago. Between the proliferation of flavored vodka and several new vodka entrants, the category has become increasingly competitive, with a large number of new global entrants into the US premium vodka category in the last 20 years. “This has eroded brand equity as consumers are more willing to try different brands. This has put enormous pressure on pricing as vodka becomes more commoditized,” he says.

And it all started 80 years ago with one Russian vodka.

In his article entitled, “The Vodka Revolution,” (Boise Weekly, 5-19-2004), author Bingo Barnes, explained how Smirnoff, the patriarch vodka brand brought here from Russia in 1934, took off and launched a lasting cocktail culture. Primarily, Smirnoff execs knew a trait about vodka not inherent in any other alcoholic beverage, and launched a campaign that was hard to ignore. “It leaves you breathless,” featuring endorsements by celebrities such as Woody Allen, Groucho Marx and Zsa Zsa Gabor, conveyed to cocktailers that vodka is nearly impossible to smell on someone’s breath. This fact was picked up by other distillers eager to get into the game.

However, Barnes writes, “it wasn’t until Sean Connery, in perhaps the greatest product placement success story in the history of Hollywood, said, ‘Shaken, not stirred,’ in reference to his Smirnoff Vodkatini in 1962’s ‘Dr. No,’ did vodka become one of the major spirit categories along with whiskey, gin and brandies. But Smirnoff ’s love affair with Bond may have come to an end. Controversy erupted in the James Bond movie empire when MGM decided to have James drink Finlandia vodka in ‘Die Another Day’ instead of his usual Smirnoff. Throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s vodka, specifically the Smirnoff brand, continued to grow with

increased marketing and product p l a c e m e n t in movies. By 1978, Smirnoff had become the number one spirits brand in the country.”

Robert Plotkin, bartending and spirits expert, explained the current vodka landscape in his article, “What’s New with America’s Spirit of Choice - Vodka” for Nightclub & Bar (nightclub.com, 5-20-14), noting that this category of spirits saw 72 million cases sold in 2013.

How the vodka is made will deliver its taste experience. First, Plotkin notes, is the character of water used -- artesian, spring or glacier sourced. Also, starting materials vary too -- some vodkas are made from corn, while others are made from potatoes, winter wheat or rye. “Each will produce a distinctively different spirit. Most neutral vodkas are distilled from corn, which yields the most alcohol per bushel. The most expensive and most technically challenging starch to distill is potato. But when done well, potato vodkas are a treat for the senses with characteristically oily textured bodies and vegetal bouquets. Rye vodkas are prized for their spicy, tangy flavors, while those distilled from wheat typically have delectably sweet notes on the finish.”

still sees its fair share of new entries from Russia, American

vodka enthusiasts appear to be ... unenthused. According to an

article on Marketwatch.com, last year, Russian vodka imports actually

dropped by a whopping 70 percent from 2012 (data from the Distilled

Spirits Council of the US, or “DISCUS”). Further, the five top-selling vodka brands

last year were Smirnoff (no longer made in Russia), Absolut, Svedka, Grey Goose and SKYY.

Stolichnaya, or “Stoli” to its fans, is the number-one Russian vodka -- and is keeping up with the exotic flavor trends as it is now available in Honey, Chocolate Coconut, Salted Caramel and Jalapeno, in addition to fruit flavors.

Ten years ago, who would have thought of asking the bartender for a “pomegranate vodka on the rocks?” Flash-forward to the availability of a flavor to suit nearly every palate. And now what about those artsy bottles? Why not just slap a label on the bottle and call it a day? Well, according to the article, “Consumer Trends: Design Important in Vodka Industry,” (9/9/13) on Foodmanufacturing.com, it’s all about gaining market share. The article reviewed Waltham, MA-based Affinnova, Inc.’s first Package Design Audit, which focused on the importance of package design specifically for the vodka industry. “Results showed that up and coming brands Belvedere and Pinnacle are leveraging bold and unique package designs to gain market share, while attracting more consumer attention than older brands Smirnoff and Stolichnaya,” the article explains. Note that Belvedere has an almost Ansel Adams-like etched bottle, and Pinnacle has bold graphics printed on an alluringly shaped sapphire blue bottle, while the veterans Stoli and Smirnoff still retain paper labels. According to the article, “newer brands are winning on shelf: With unique bottle designs, including bold elements and colors, younger brands like Svedka and Pinnacle are most effective at grabbing and holding consumer attention on shelf, dramatically outperforming the industry average. By contrast Smirnoff and Stolichmaya – brands with decades of brand equity – are more likely to be overlooked by consumers on the shelf.”

Apparently, the vodka experience is more than just taste -- it is a fuller sensuality, including visual appeal.

In a research paper, “Analysis of Global Marketing Strategies in Distilled Spirits Industry: Absolut Vodka,” appearing in The Journal of Global Business Management, authors Drs. Etienne Musonera and David Hemley point out, “With several hundred different choices of flavored/non-flavored, domestic/imported,

and super-/ultra-premium vodkas out in the marketplace, the need to differentiate becomes vital to the survival of these brands.” (Visit jgbm.org to read the research.)

O N B R O A D W A Y And now, a show about sex that you can take the whole family to: the kids, the grandparents, even your sister the nun. That idea may sound kind of creepy. But I assure you that the jubilant revival of “On the Town,” which opened in late October at the Lyric Theater, is anything but. On the contrary, this merry mating dance of a musical feels as fresh as first sunlight as it considers the urgent quest of three sailors to find girls and get, uh, lucky before their 24-hour shore leave is over. If there’s a leer hovering over “On the Town,” a seemingly limp 1944 artifact coaxed into pulsing new life by the director John Rando and the choreographer Joshua Bergasse, it’s the leer of an angel. The best-known song from this show — which has music by Leonard Bernstein, describes its setting as “a helluva town.” But the town in question — “New York, New York,” if you didn’t know — feels closer to

heaven here. The show felt irresistibly young and sassy when it opened during the entertainment-hungry World War II years, with its talented team of newcomers. In addition to Comden, Green and Bernstein, there was the rising choreographer Jerome Robbins, and they were all still in their 20s when they put the show together. Few things age faster, though, than the blatantly youthful. (Try watching a Taylor Swift video in a decade or so.). Yet Mr. Rando’s “On the Town” has grown up quite nicely, thank you, with much of its original cast not only intact but also improved. Every element has been heightened in just the right way, a delicate achievement when you consider the heightening that’s aspired to.Some of the shows numbers, in which comic archetypes cozy up or collide, could be placed directly into the cell of an animated Looney Tunes short. Others could slide seamlessly

onto the stage of the Paris Opera. This “On the Town” makes you forget that such contrasting sensibilities could ever be considered irreconcilable What’s surprising is how fluent the entire cast is in both the high and low languages they are required to speak.Start with Mr. Yazbeck as Gabey, the most unworldly of the three shipmates who invade New York. He’s a greener-than-alfalfa farm boy, so clumsy that he can’t say hello to a stranger without muffing it. But when he looks inward, to his lovelorn heart, he becomes a supremely eloquent dancer, a fusion of Astaire’s elegance and Kelly’s bounce. And he has a yearning voice to match, plied to swoony effect in ballads like the great “Lonely Town.” Throughout the show, which includes the dreamiest dream ballets I’ve seen in years, Mr. Bergasse maintains a rare feeling of idiosyncrasy in harmony. Similarly,

he’s captured the Robbins spirit, but stamped it with his own vivid signature. Women found themselves newly in

charge of the home front during World War II, so it feels appropriate that the soul mates of Chip and Ozzie should be such exuberantly take-charge gals. As Hildy, the forthright taxi driver who hijacks Chip to her place, Alysha Umphress is a red-hot mama who sings double entendres with a prurience-proof, bebop gusto. As for Ms. Fairchild, whom Gabey falls for when he sees her picture as this month’s Miss Turnstiles, she looks and talks like the sugar-sweet girl next door that all-American servicemen once dreamed of. When she dances, though, she’s a goddess. The large supporting cast embraces both virtuoso comic shtick artists and a corps de ballet that seems to be dancing on air, even in dirty old Times Square. That’s partly because there’s always that music — ah, that music.

Caroline RheaThanks to an introduction by

Suzy Yengo of “Catch A Rising Star,”, we had the

p l e a s u r e of talking to Caroline Rhea in the middle of her busy bi-coastal schedule. The star of numerous TV shows, movies and of course, stand-up comedy, we were able to grab a few minutes after a harrowing two weeks of trying to make this happen. The timing was particularly important because in December she’ll be performing at IPlay America in Freehold.

Venues-NJ: Caroline, I want to thank you for agreeing to be my “Comedian du jour” for the December issue of Venues NJ. I have to tell you the truth, often when I see you on TV or read about you, I always picture the “Carolyn vs. Caroline” scene from “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” So I guess my first question is.... Tell me how much of that was scripted and how much was improvised?

Caroline Rhea: That whole experience was hilarious for me because first of all, I find Larry David extremely sexy in that you-are-a-genius-and-don’t-seem-to-like-me-at-all way. He was triggering my inner “Ignore me and I’ll be drawn to you.” He just gave me an objective for the scene which was, “Humiliate yourself in front of Larry.” Easy, I thought, but after five takes of him calling me “Carolyn” I just blurted out, “It’s Caroline!” and then they built the whole episode around it.

V-NJ: You’re a Canadian, originally from Montreal, who made the move to NYC almost 25 years ago. That’s a pretty ballsy move, so how scared/excited were you when you made that decision? CR: I was terrified and clueless, which was a necessary combination. I had

$300, bought a pair of earrings for $220, and every time I say, “Soupy Sales” (whom I didn’t know but would have mystical sightings of ), something good would happen in my career.

V-NJ: So now you’ve made something of a name for yourself in the Big Apple, was it an agent, an offer or something else that got you to LA? CR: It was a plane.

V-NJ: I think I first recall seeing you on “The Drew Carey Show” (as

a fellow Marine, I love the guy), which was a pretty big breakthrough show along the lines of “Roseanne.” What are some of your memories of back then? CR: I was actually on “Sabrina” at the time and did two episodes as his girlfriend, who was actually married to Eric Roberts. During most of my career, I am in the moment while simultaneously thinking, “I am going to make out with Eric Roberts?

V-NJ: The Biggest Loser. How did that one happen? I didn’t feel you were in your element in that you weren’t trying to be funny. Personally I liked you in the show but it didn’t seem like you were being you. CR: I loved the contestants but I was on a

show with three witches and a talking cat that at times seemed more reality based. When Caroline mentions about having

worked on a TV show “with three witches and a talking cat” many of you will recognize that it’s “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” which aired for seven seasons.

She also mentioned during our conversation that she almost

named her d a u g h t e r Eva. Of course, once she realized this would result in name pronunciation confusion (Eva or Ava) she

decided the lesser confusing of the two was preferable (Ava), a quick trip to her IMDB.com page will reveal her as having been credited in well over 100 shows and counting. Comic Relief

Sadly, Selena Coppack’s aBostonian and doesn’t understand that the only real teams to root for are in NY and NJ. I jest of course (kinda, sorta). Coppack has been performing stand up for eight years and her new book, The New Rules For Blondes, launches in April.

Were you “the funny one” growing up?

I come from a very funny home and my older sister Laurel is a comedian, too. So I wasn’t really ‘the funny one’ at home so much as Laurel and I spent a lot of time writing musicals in our bedrooms, choreographing strange dance numbers, and watching “Saturday Night Live” since age 7. I think that my parents and oldest sister Emily are super hilarious, too. But yes, I’ve always been a bit of a ham and really interested in comedy and performing.

Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised?

I grew up outside of Boston and I did all of the school plays growing up -- I absolutely loved performing and the excitement of rehearsing and being in shows. I did some professional theater in Boston (at the Boston Baked Theater--now gone) and in high school I became interested in singing, too. I went to college in upstate NY where I majored in English and didn’t do any of the plays on campus; but I was in the only co-ed a cappella group on campus (the Hamilton College Hamiltones) and the improv troupe. After school I moved to Chicago

to study improv comedy further and it was improv that really led me to standup. I did improv for years and eventually I just got sick of working with other people, which makes me sound like a total curmudgeon, I know.

Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?

The rejection is definitely hard and it’s something that everyone -- even my comedy idols -- have experienced at some point. Early on I think that I wanted the audience to like me, which can be dangerous territory, especially for female comedians. You have to be confident and feel entitled to be up there with the microphone and that took me a while to figure out -- how to just own the stage and trust myself more. I think of standup as like training a dog -- if you get out there and you’re confident and in control, the audience is with you. But if you exude a sense of nervousness or you seem insecure, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve been doing standup for about eight years and even now sometimes I’ll have a show where I can sense that certain people in the audience aren’t completely on board with me and it makes me feel nervous, but I know to just plow through it and keep on going and eventually I’ll hit on a joke or reference that wins them over.

Is this a means to an end? “SNL”, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your goal?

I definitely don’t think of standup as a means to an end and I think that comedians who do are pretty miserable people. It has to be its own reward or else you’re crazy to do this thing. But as far as my goal, mine is pretty broad: I’d like for my comedy (performance, writing) to pay for my life. I don’t know exactly how that will shake out, but I’d like my job to be what I love to do, which is write and perform comedy. I have a book coming out in April (The New Rules for Blondes, from It Books/HarperCollins), which I hope will open up new opportunities for me. It’s a collection of humorous essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype, but it’s for readers of all hair colors.

of fulfillment; to cherish a desire. Wishful thinking.

It’s a part of all human nature. A phenomenon ingrained in our being. As a child, we hope Santa will bring us that special gift we’ve always wanted; as an adult, we hope we get that job we applied for; as a parent we hope our child gets into that certain school. However, hope is really just an inactive desire or wish. It is not a proactive movement. Advanced planning and needed actions must be taken if we want our “hopes” to be fulfilled.

In our hospitality industry, we can hope that next year’s business will be better than this past year’s. We can have a desire to improve our food, our staff and our service in order to attract new and repeat customers. But, unless we are proactive and intelligently plan and implement the actions required, our “hopes” will not be realized.

Taking a look at our national scene, we have just witnessed a change in the power structure of our institutional government. Many had hopes that their party or their favored politician would win or be reelected. But unless the majority of proactive voters took action and went to the polling booths, status quo would have prevailed.

Don’t get me wrong. Hope is a good thing. It’s what keeps us motivated and allows us to look toward the future with a positive attitude. But, unless hope is preceded with solid research, planning and follow through, it may very well remain just a desire with little chance of fruition.
