DECEMBER 2010

Libra 9/23 – 10/22A variety of signs will confuse this month, but at least you have the per-sistence and imagination to keep going anyway. You’ll manage to push through them all until you reach the good stuff. Keep at it.Scorpio 10/23 – 11/21Informal altruism -- loaning your jacket to a cold friend, pitching money into a tip jar or tossing a soccer ball back to a kid -- could have you sing-ing ditties to yourself. Your karma has certainly been adding up lately.Sagittarius 11/22 – 12/21Like a dance instructor who still loves the basic steps, you can get everything done and have brainpower left over to guide others and tell jokes. You’re a superhero (at least in the comic sense).Capricorn 12/22 – 1/19Some of your ambitions for the future may feel quashed by family this month, but in truth you’re not ready for big changes yet. Enjoy your cur-rent life, and know that change isn’t too far away. You’ll be ready.Aquarius 1/20 – 2/18Just like on a call-in talk show, personal interactions are your focus. Keep the answers in sight and remember the charming things about those around you. A cheerful attitude will get you far.Pisces 2/19 – 3/20

to read, a birthday card you haven’t written or some other project that you’ve been ignoring, today’s the day to get started.Aries 3/21 – 4/19A mass of ideas descends upon you, and like a plant thirsty for water, you suck them up and get their nutrients. Luckily, that hunger for knowl-

Taurus 4/20 – 5/20

will help you pick and choose your adventures for the rest of the month. So get someone to help you play accountant.Gemini 5/21 – 6/21Your group seems to have the organization (or lack thereof) of a cloud of gnats. Seize the moment like a dancer in a musical, and guide them into choreography, whether you direct them to a movie or a park.Cancer 6/22 – 7/22You know how on the TV show ‘Big Brother’ it never pays to talk back to authority? Well, keep that lesson in mind today, and think before you speak. You have skills and sharp wits. Use them to win the bigger game.Leo 7/23 – 8/22

evening. Kick back and watch the sunset, or share some hugs with an affectionate friend.Virgo 8/23 – 9/22All month long, it’ll be as if a cheerleading squad is riling people up to prepare for your entrance. Enthusiasm and excitement greet you from every direction, and it’s totally contagious.

Dear Students,

With the Holiday season fast approaching, it’s easy to get caught up with all the presents and gifts. The Holiday Season is a perfect excuse to take time from our busy schedules and spend some quality time with our family and friends. Board game nights, movie nights, and potluck’s are great ways to pass the Holiday time enjoyably.

We all enjoy receiving presents, but the saying “it’s the thought that counts” is what we should focus on. Being a thoughtful gift giver means that

you took the time to think about the person’s interests, needs, wants and dislikes, in order to pick the perfect gift to give from the heart. Thoughtful gifts do not have to be lavish and expensive, rather homemade and custom

into it. Albert Schweitzer said, “You must give some time to your fellow men. Even if it’s a little thing, do something for others – something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.”

Here are some thoughtful and affordable Holiday gifts you can give this year:- Homemade or custom coupons (i.e. car wash, doing the dishes)- Bake a bunch of different types of cookies and you can make a cookie basket for your friends- Another man’s trash is a siblings treasure, it never hurts to look around your bedroom for a present for your siblings.

Just Say No to Couch Potato Season : 5 Ideas

to make you move

By Mackenzie Aspa

Page 7: December2010

Suck it up and take a walk anyway - There’s something about the bracing air on a cold, sunny winter day that just gives you energy. Don’t believe me? Try it. If nothing else, you’ll get a move on just trying to stay warm.Get a game - Got a Wii or a new Xbox Kinect? Put down Halo and get a game that will get you moving. In addition

and Dance Central that will seriously give you a workout. Indoor Dance Party – If all else fails, it’s time to break out the ultimate winter pick-me-up. Select an upbeat theme (90’s hits, old-school, or theme ideas), invite some friends, or just yourself and dance the bone-shivering cold away! Try a new indoor or outdoor winter sport – This is L.A., the city where you can go from the beach to the snow in the same day; TAKE ADVANTAGE. Besides indoor options like bowling and roller skating, try a new outdoor option

you’re totally new.Turn your house into a gym – If you don’t want to go out you can also turn your house into a gym. Those 5 gallon jugs of water could double as free weights, that staircase could be your treadmill. You can place one, two or even three canned items in a tube sock and can use these as weights. You can build your core muscles with crunches and dips using your couch. For the crunches, you put your legs on the couch. For the dips, you switch and put your arms on the couch. Your body serves as resistance. The only limit is your imagination.

Holiday movies featuring grinning skaters pirouet-ting on frozen lakes turned into outdoor ice skating rinks could make any L.A. Native feel a little winter

even in 80-degree weather and the invention of a hybrid synthetic surface that skates like ice has spawned an outbreak of outdoor ice skating rinks around L.A. creating pseudo-winter fun for the chronically sun-baked. Don’t own skates or know how to move? No problem, most offer lessons and the whole thing is pretty affordable.

Downtown on Ice is the original Los Angeles outdoor ice rink. The 4500 square foot rink is set up on Pershing Square in front of the Biltmore Hotel. Downtown Ice hosts medley of FREE events including a holiday concert series, a Winter Holiday Fiesta, championship skating exhibitions, and more. Metro and Metrolink riders receive a $1 skating session discount by show-ing their Metro transit receipt/pass. $6 admission plus $2 skate rental.Nov 18, 2010 - Jan 17, 2011 http://www.laparks.org/pershingsquare/

ICE at Santa Monica brings a little skate to the surf and trans-forms the corner of 5th Street and Arizona into a 8,000 square ft. rink by the beach. Winter without the bite and a great location for holiday play, ICE at Santa Monica is the perfect place to hang out with friends, family, and loved ones, throw a party in a

sons. Join the fun and visit Downtown Santa Monica this season to experience ICE. Season passes are available. $10 including skate rental.Nov 5, 2010 - Feb 15, 2011 http://www.iceatsantamonica.com/

LA LIVE HOLIDAY ICE brings outdoor ice skating to Nokia Plaza at L.A.Live. They’ve enlarged the skating area this year to 5600 square feet to accommodate up to 200 skaters at once. Skate with Santa every evening from 7-8 pm through Dec 22. $12 for unlimited skating including skate rental.Nov 27, 2010 - Jan 1, 2011 http://www.lalive.com/holidayice

Bundle up and take a spin on “CHILL”, the coolest skate rink this season. The W Los Angeles - Westwood pool deck has been transformed into a winter playground featuring a hybrid ice skat-ing rink called “CHILL”. For the 2nd year in a row, join us in our backyard as we bring the magic of the holidays to life. Sneaky surprises are in store including lessons and performances every Saturday by BH Skating Park’s Cabaret Ice Theater. $10/hr includes skate rental. Nov 19, 2010 - Jan 2, 2011

features over 7000 square feet of real ice beneath towering pine trees and the California sun and stars. Woodland Hills Ice offers daily recreational ice skating along with special events, skating exhibitions, skating classes & private lessons, birthday parties,

GIVE THIS NOT THAT WHAT NOT TO GET YOUR GF/BF AND OTHER GIFT GIVING DOʼ’S AND DONʼ’TS

The old saying “it’s the thought that counts” is totally true however, many people seem to struggle with the

phrase means is that that you don’t necessarily have to focus on spending a bunch of money for a gift to be good. What it does not mean is “any old

get something so now my job is done and whomever I give said piece of junk to should be happy and grateful that I thought of them.” No, you have to actually think about the person involved. This is especially true when it comes to that special someone. While you may expect a wild or crazy gift from that sort of off aunt you see once a year, you expect the gift you get from you BF or GF to be special, meaningful and, well, “good.” Let’s face it, a bad gift can ruin a relationship, or at least put a strain on it. However, adhering to the gifting dos and don’ts can save you some trouble and even land you a genuine thank-you.

5 THINGS NOT TO GIVE YOUR GF1. Bath products – Once upon a time someone decided that the best gift for teen girls was bath products. As a result, most girls have a ton of smelly Bath and Body Works laying around that they’ll never even hope to use. They don’t need (or want) more from you. This is a gift that basically says “I feel neutral about you and I don’t know anything you like.” Gift cards basically say the same thing so don’t buy those either. Unless you want to send those messages pick something else.

2. Clothing – Simply put there is just too much room for error. You may not know her exact sizes and purchases clothes too big or too small might offend (“you really think I’m that big?” “This doesn’t

don’t you?”).Taste is another factor here, unless you know her exact size and the

exact store she likes to go to we suggest you stay away from the cloth zone.

3. Anything your ex has (especially if your current knows your ex has it) – No one wants to feel like they have to compete with the last person you were with. So if your ex wears DKNY perfume (and especially if your current knows this) don’t buy your new GF the same thing. You think you’re buying something that smells nice. She thinks you are trying to get her to smell like your ex, or you really still want your ex. Avoid this unnecessary confusion.

4. The Gift of Me! – No matter what Jeremih says the gift of “you” is no gift, and nothing says “I love you less” like the gift of nothing. Buy something or do something, but there has to be a “something”5. Anything Related to Weight-Loss is a Bad Gift - Gym memberships, weight-loss books, and workout equipment

to Christmas presents. Even if your intentions are good and your girlfriend has mentioned that she wants to get healthier don’t go there. When you buy the gift of weight loss you are saying that she needs it and you don’t.

5 THINGS NOT TO GIVE YOUR BF1. Video Games – I know he loves them but getting your BF a video game, video console etc. is a recipe for you having a bunch of new free time alone.

2. Stuffed Animals – I really don’t know why girls give guys stuffed animals. They don’t know what to do with them. So unless your BF is four or has a thing for the build a bear place in the mall no stuffed animals or anything else that cute and cuddly.

3. Gift Cards – There go those gift cards again. This is the ultimate “I don’t know you well but I have to give you something” gift. Don’t send that impression.

4. A Picture of YOU in a frame – It sounds cute and all, but this is one of those gifts that not really a gift. Give him something for him.

5. Your favorite movie – No matter how great you thought The Devil Wears Prada was or how wonderful you found Sex In The City, your guy will most likely want to watch something else. Pay attention to what he picks and considers when he goes to the movies or rents a video, even if it’s a movie you absolutely hate, if it makes him happy it’s a good gift.

5 STRATEGIES TO GREAT GIFTING1. Consider your budget and how much would be appropriate to give based on your relationship- The rule is: The older and closer you are to him/her, the more expensive. That doesn’t mean that you have to buy him/her a car. It means that if you aren’t that good friends, you don’t need to buy him/her such a costly present. Is this someone you’ve known forever and are really close with or is this just the hottie that sits next to you in math? In gift giving relativity matters. Going way overboard for someone you barely know can look desperate and somewhat stalkerish, but coming up short for someone you know well can be hurtful and damaging to the relationship. Consider that your gift equals budget + time. Look at how much money and time you have to give to your gift giving, and then divide it up into a pie of how many people you have to take care of. Give the largest slices to those most important to you, moving down the line until you’re done.2. Think about what they like, but also what maybe a “inside joke” or a memory between you two. Never ask what they want, it sort of ruins the surprise. Just stay aware of things. Like brands, colors, styles, movies, music, things they collect, etc.3. Know your friend’s interest. If s/he loves dogs, it’s useless to buy him/her

By Gary White & Jessica Rodriguez

Page 9: December2010

+a toy cat. If s/he is allergic to cheese, it wouldn’t be nice to give him/her some cheddar cheese as a gift.4. Make sure to keep it a secret, and if you tell anyone make sure they keep it secret too! Most people say they don’t like surprises but they really do.5. Make sure the gift looks presentable. The wrapping does count. For example: if you get a book, wrap it, and add a card. Or if you buy a clothing item make sure it’s wrapped in a box or shopping bag. Always personalize a gift, even if its just a card.

SURVIVING THE GIFTING DEFICIT Q: My girlfriend comes from a family with way more money than mine. They buy her everything she wants. She’s expecting a gift from me for the holidays but I feel like I can’t keep up. Anything I get will be cheap compared to what she already has. What do I do?A: This type of situation can feel challenging, but don’t worry too much. The thought really does count and a heap of thought and creativity can make up

Don’t hesitate to get something from the heart that represents yourself or the relationship. The more sentimental value this item holds, the less likely she is to think about how much it costs (‘There are some things money can’t buy’..etc.).Think about places you two have gone. For example: you two went to a concert, get her something from that band. It’s more personal then a gift card. If you don’t have money or truly have no idea what to get. Make up coupons. Like “I.O.U. one day to do anything you want” the goal here is to pick something personal that you can make memories while doing. You can even bring a camera or buy a disposable for the day.

6 THINGS I WISH MY FAMILY KNEW NOT TO GET ME FOR CHRISTMASThe Holiday Season is fast approaching and with it comes the exchanging of gifts both big and small. Sometimes these gifts are appreciated and sometimes they are... not as appreciated. Some gifts are so horrible they’re scarier than anything you might see on Halloween. Oddly enough it seems like family are often the

greatest offenders in this area. Maybe its because you have to be nice or because they know you’re not going anywhere. Whatever the reason a downright awful gift can really dash your holiday cheer.

6 THINGS I WISH MY FAMILY KNEW NOT TO GET ME FOR CHRISTMAS.1. The re-gift – “Last year my brother got me a sweater. Don’t get me wrong.....it was a really nice sweater. Only problem was that I gave it to him as a Christmas present the year before !!!! Be careful if you practice re-gifting ! 2. Weird Amounts of Money – “I wish I had two dollars for every time my grandmother gave me two dollars and told me to go buy myself “something pretty” with said two dollars. It wasn’t that I didn’t appreciate the idea of her giving me a present, because after all, presents are presents, right? But seriously, what am I going to do with two dollars in this day and age other than buy myself half of a value meal at a fast food place? I understand that my grandmother grew up in another time and all but its hard to act super excited over $2… and she expects super excited. “What’s wrong?” She always

3. Thoughtless wastes of everyone’s Time – “Anyone who believes that some gift is better then no gift has never received cologne when they are allergic, been given coffee when they only drink tea and obviously have never been given a bath towel that has a white side marked with the word Face and a brown side marked with the word Butt by your step dad for Christmas. He said he saw it and thought of me instantly. I’m still not really sure what to make of that statement.” 4. Really? You should know me better! – “I’ve come to the conclusion that adults shouldn’t by kids clothes. Last year my mother bought me a bright pink suit. You know the church lady kind with the matching hat. She gives it to me like it’s the keys to a Range Rover or something. “You’re going to look so cute! Every woman should have a good suit” was her explanation. Ok I would be able to roll with that if I had somewhere to

does she see me everyday and still buy me something three sizes too

big? “You’ll grow into it” she says. (God I seriously hope not). 5. Awkward silences – “Two years ago I got this musical jewelry box from my mom. I’m a 18 year old male, btw. Also, I never wear any sort of jewelry. The worst part is pretending that I liked it. I felt really guilty about not liking it because I’m sure it had some sort of sentimental value. I just sort of put it in the corner of my closet and then forgot about it. She would ask me where it was or if I had put anything in there and I’d be like “Uhm yeah.. See. I really like it. Thanks for the great present mom.”6. Homemade clothes – or anything else that is ridiculously ugly - “Dear Grandparents who I haven’t had any contact with since last Christmas when I called you up to fake-thank you for the god-awful clothes you gave me then, maybe it’s not a good idea to buy clothes for your granddaughter who you never talk to. If you did talk to her, you would know that she doesn’t enjoy the same sweats and pj’s you gave her when she was in second grade nor does she have any kind of use for a home made sweater with a picture of a crayon box on the front. You would also know (maybe) that she doesn’t wear a size large, but an XS. That’s a big difference, one that you obviously didn’t notice since you never see her or talk to her. So what’s the last present you should get someone who you know nothing about? Clothing. What’s the second to last present you should get someone whether you know them or not? If the person is over 5 then the overly ugly sweater with the giant crayon on it is way out of line. Never give clothing to a stranger. Relatives who I never talk to this includes you.”

Make a commitment. The holidays in my experience are not the most ideal times to decide to lose weight. However committing to not gaining weight is a more realistic goal you can achieve with very little effort. Show your control and power as a young adult and decide that over this holiday season weight gain will NOT be the ‘gift’ you give yourself.

Plan ahead. Being unprepared is one of the top reasons people don’t achieve success. If you know you are going to a family

high fat, sugary high caloric foods. You can either eat before you go or bring your own healthy dish. Eating before you go will help keep you from overindulging in unhealthy food items. By volunteering to bring a fruit or vegetable tray you will at least have one

something healthy others often eat it out of guilt and they are thankful.

Before you go rushing to the buffet table, start off with a big green salad. This

-

other food you will eat after.

Stay out of the kitchen.area away from the food to relax. If you spend your time staring

harder to keep your consumption down. After you eat walk away from the dinner table and mingle in an area unobstructed by food. Like they say “out of sight, out of mind”.

Allow yourself a few treats. Don’t punish yourself over the holiday by trying to avoid food. Stressing out about what you can and can’t eat can be just as hazardous as overeating. Stress causes the body to produce the hormone cortisol. Increased cortisol levels cause weight gain, decreased metabolism and even depression. Instead allow yourself a dessert and appetizer or two. Yet, try and reduce your portion to about half of what you would regularly eat. This way you are getting your cake and eating it too, just not all of it.

Practice saying no thank you in advance. Roll play with your self. Create the future in advance by visualizing yourself

being asked to eat more then your allotted calories

can use when the time comes. By doing this ex-ercise you will relieve some of the pressure that is created in the holiday feasting atmosphere.

Play. One reason people gain weight is that they stop moving. Instead they sit around talking. If

there’s one thing I know for sure, little kids don’t stop moving. Find time after or before dinner to hang with your

little cousins, sisters or brothers, they will keep you moving burning calories while at the same time you are building a bond and relationship which is what the holidays are all about. Exercise. Like I said before the reason people gain weight is they eat more and move less. In order to lose or maintain your weight you have to reverse this process. Working out can be

30 minute walk before and after dinner helps.

Just LIV

Crayola isn’t just for kids (though I still

cell phone wallpapers. The tool lets you

choose colors, shapes, and use your own

photos. Not sure how to start? There is

a Mood Quiz for creative inspiration. Save

your creations, edit them later, or use

them right away -- even share them with

your friends on Facebook. If you choose,

you can see how much other Liv stylists

“Like” your designs. You might even see

your creation in the Top Designs section!

To print out your Liv Crayola design you

will need:Liv Crayola Web Design Pack,

Color inkjet printer, LivCrayola.com

account (which is free). All the fun is at

LivCrayola.com.

The actual perfect pair of jeans

I don’t care how many pairs of jeans the

fashion magazines parade in front of

you telling you they are perfect, if they

are perfect for somebody that person

isn’t usually you. Finding a pair that

fits and actually looks good on you can

be a challenge. Gaping waist bands,

muffin tops, legs that are too long or too

short, cuts that are too slim or baggy,

its complete madness. But like I said

before, nothing is cooler than custom.

Two sites let you truly create the perfect

pair of jeans for you by letting you be the

designer. That’s right totally custom

jeans, you pick the color, length, style,

all the particulars, then give them your

actual measurements to make sure you

get the perfect fit. Offering styles for

both guys and girls makeyourownjeans.

com (starting at $39) and indicustom.com

(starting at $150) let you call all the shots.

Take that fashion editor!

Me and hot glue guns just don’t get along, so whenever some person or some article smugly suggests that the best way I can show true

friendship is to make my own gifts, or that the only way to be truly unique is to decorate my own (fill in the blank item here); I cringe.

I just can’t do it, the things I make never look like the picture and end up costing way too much time and money. The next Martha

Stewart I am not, but I like the cool of custom and the uniqueness of personalization. Fortunately for me DIY (do it yourself) has gone

digital! There are several online outlets that let you make custom items that you can use for yourself or your bffs without your mom

getting mad because you got paint on the carpet again. When you think digital custom items you might be thinking digital coffee mugs

from Kinkos, no offense to Kinks but custom has gotten way cooler than that. Six Digital DIYs that get it right.

Add some Zazzle to your life

Custom is always better when it comes

to gifting! Just in time for the holiday

shopping season, consumers can now

make their own iPad and iPhone cases,

or select from over 30,000 thousand

designs in the Zazzle marketplace to

find gifts as unique as everyone on

their shopping list. They can also upload

pictures of their favorite piece of art,

personal photo or memorable quote. The

award-winning hard shell cases provide

maximum device protection and a fully

customizable fabric-wrapped backside

with eye-popping print quality. Don’t have

an iphone? That’s ok, Zazzle also lets

you customize tons of products such as

t-shirts, shoes, hoodies, notebooks and

even skateboard decks. The content

is virtually unlimited. Start creating at

Kickin it Kustom

Ever felt like you couldn’t get a pair of

sneakers that were just quite, I don’t know

you? This is now no longer a problem.

Vans.com and Converse.com both have

online shoe designers. They let you

customize pretty much everything, from

the shoelaces to the colors of each part

of the shoe, even the rubber sole at the

bottom. Choose from a variety of styles in

men’s, women’s and kid’s sizes. Feel free

to make them as wild or conservative as

you want. Starting at around $70 a pair,

they’re not even that much more than

what you’d pay for a standard pair in the

store. Custom kicks for a truly custom

style.

Glitter and Gloss

For that girl on your list, or even yourself,

Prescriptive Custom Blend lets you

create your own lip gloss. You first choose

a base color from over 30 shades, and

then choose your finish. The options are:

full color (solid color similar to a liquid

lipstick), chrome (metallic finish with the

look of lacquer), luster (equal parts pearl

and pigment for a reflective, prismatic

effect), and glitter (pearly chunks add

dramatic spark), sheer sparkle (light and

lustrous with a mini-pearl gleam), or jelly

(sheer, clear, high shine look). Step three,

and this is my favorite part, is choosing

the flavor. The website describes the

options as follows: Tropical, Belllini ,

Latte, Berry, Melon, Icy Mint, Cocoa and

Meringue. If you’re not into smelly stuff

you also have the option of choosing no

flavor. Non-sticky, extremely lightweight

and vitamin-enriched this makes a nice

beauty treat or a great present.

Book By You

Your bestie that loves to read (or maybe

your bestie you are trying to encourage

to start reading) might enjoy a custom

novel. You pick the overall topic (choose

from a high school story, a vampire

story or a werewolf tale) then you get

to customize and personalize the main

and supporting characters including

names and descriptions, locations, pets

and other particulars. You can add a

personal “author” picture to the back

and a dedication in the front. Pick from

hard cover or paperback options. Visit

bookbyyou.com/teen for more details.

started we lugged an old school desktop computer that was the size of a house with an 80’s monitor and a radio shack mike up to an attic in downtown LA where we would teach

ourselves how to record songs.

about what we saw as a new generation of kid in Downtown LA mixed up in 30 different cultures and scenes within a few city blocks. The song was just about how we’re living and we called the song “The Far East Movement”. It wasn’t till a few weeks later while we were rehearsing the song in my mom’s kitchen that we realized “dang that song reps everything we’re about.. That has to be our name.”

your song on the radio were where you and what was your reaction?

Jsplif: I was in the car with Prohgress cruising through LA and we turned on Power 106 randomly and heard “new new new music.. Far East Movement” we freaked out and Prohgress hit the gas and ran 3 red lights and got pulled

heard our song on the radio but he wasn’t too impressed.

CH. What does the space helmet represent to the group?

Kev Nish: when people see our show we want them to anticipate something different and think outside the box so we rock the space helmets to represent that.

CH. You have worked with a lot of other artist. Who has shared knowledge and what was it?

Prohgress: we’ve learned something new from every artist we’ve toured with. LMFAO taught me a proper

Lady Gaga gave our DJ Brass Monkey some fresh fashion tips that involve a sword and blood. Touring with Robyn we learned how a show can be taken up a notch musically.

incredible being able to work with such amazing artists.

CH. Which person in the group contributes which sound?

started we had to learn the music industry from the ground up, managing ourselves, recording, marketing, and creating any opportunity we could on our own so behind the scenes we operate as a team and each work different roles in the business. I work on new business opportunities and keeping our biz from red lining at anytime. DJ Virman keeps the team up on new music and is always working on the live show set so we can always improve. Jsplif works on all merchandising, from getting anything designed, produced and at the merchant table for the next show. Jsplif used to ship all cds and tees out of his apartment so it looked like a mini warehouse. Kev Nish does all the creative media and online in addition to coming up with new projects for us to move on. Musically, DJ Virman is the dj and gives inspiration in the studio and me, kev N, Jspliff all MC and song write while dabbling in

overall production to create our free wired sound.

CH. How did you guys come up with your style as far as dress?

Kev Nish: What we wear is inspired by how we live. We’re working nonstop and partying nonstop. So ties and kicks (sneakers) keep it party and business. Even when we’re partying we’re always working. Shades keep us chill. We don’t want people watching us think

too hard because it can kill the vibe. In addition the shades help from people seeing the trash bags under our eyes from 3 days of not sleeping. Haha

CH. Is this journey all you expected it to be?

J-splif: Back in the day when we

worked and worked with no

guarantee anything would come of it. We just loved music and everything we are doing so much that nothing could steer us in the wrong direction. The journey was a long road of the highest highs and the lowest lows, so when these crazy things happen to us, like getting signed to a dream label or going double platinum or hitting #1 on billboard we never get too excited or caught in the moment because we know it could all disappear if we don’t

stay focused and work harder to build the opportunities we’ve been blessed with.

CH. What is your most memorable moment in your career thus far?

record deal in the cherrytree

video of it all and you can see the smiles on our face. It was a

dream comes true. Our second most memorable moment was when we were surprised with

million sold of “Like A G6”

CH. Your style is very different did you ever get negative feedback from being different?

Kev Nish: All the time. Labels would tell us our style is too in-consistent or dance music doesn’t carry across the country, so they wouldn’t

believe in us early on. Only a few people at Interscope and Martin at Cherrytree really believed enough to sign us and told us “You guys have created a party that we want to be invited to.” That was amazing to hear and it gave us

ourselves to create this Free Wired album.

CH. What do you think is the key to your success?

DJ Virman: Having a great team around us that share the same vision. We also have an amazing community of people that have helped us along the road and always believed and inspired us. Always pushing ourselves to work harder and basing our decisions off doing the right thing have also played a big role in new opportunities coming our way.

CH. What advice would you give to a student trying to get into

your position of being a famous artist?

Kev Nish: Surround yourself with positive people that share the same vision, always think about the big picture and stay humble and focused and if it’s your true love, never give up.

Don’t Send your brain on winter vacation: Minderobics will keep your IQ fit!want to think about is school. That’s fair. But at the same time you don’t want to just let your brain totally atrophy either. Wouldn’t it be great if while you were having fun over winter break, your brain could come back stronger than before? The human brain is technically an organ, but it’s like a muscle in that giving it a workout can make it work better. Exercising the mind can help you think faster, improve memory, comprehend information better and unleash your brain’s full potential. But thinking about school work isn’t the only way get your brain doing mental push ups. There are many techniques that won’t feel like school, but can give the brain a boost. Try some out and even share with family and friends during the break.

Try mental math instead of reaching for the calculator – When you’re out shopping or eating try calculating discounts, tax, tips and totals without a calculator or without waiting for the register to do it for you.

Do the Wrong thing - Use your wrong (non-dominate) hand to do a daily activity like opening the cereal box or the milk carton; to brush your teeth, comb your hair or use the mouse. Write with both hands simultaneously. Switch hands for knife and fork. This will cultivate ambidexterity and give your mind (and body) a challenge.

Rest - Yeah rest! Your cell phone has to recharge, so do you. Make sure your body and mind, both, get the required rest. Meditation and yoga help to increase concentration and also have a calming and soothing effect on the mind and body. No one is suggesting you sleep the day away but if you’re not getting enough

day. Even a power nap can help.Try Brain Foods – Some foods feed more than just your body, they are also great for your brain. Water: Drinking about 8-10 glasses of water a day is important to keep the brain working well. For those of you who are unaware, about three-quarters of the human brain is composed of water. Studies have proven that those who drink

enough water a day have better brain function than those who don’t. Berries: Berries such as blueberries, raspberries, etc., are known to improve memory and brain power. Oily Fish: Oily

essential for good memory and concentration powers. Nuts and Seeds: Certain nuts and seeds are other great sources of omega 3 fatty acids as well as vitamin E and are the perfect foods for brain power. Sprinkle a few nuts in your cereal or bowl of oatmeal, or have a handful of slightly roasted nuts and seeds as a snack. Green, Leafy Vegetables: broccoli,

etc., and are rich sources of antioxidants that

function. Whole Grains: Whole grains such as oatmeal, brown rice, and bran are sources of complex carbohydrates that are healthy for the body. Solve it - Play games that will make you concentrate and think. Try a Sudoku puzzle, brain teaser or solve the daily crossword puzzle. Play video games and other problem solving computer games that force you to plan and have a strategy. Whatever you choose just make sure you’re truly putting your mind to work.Get Creative – There are lots of things that can get your mind ready to go for the gold in the mental gymnastics. Learn to play a musical instrument, learn to juggle, read something interesting daily, daydream, and take up a new hobby. Learn a new language, read and write poetry, keep a journal or even spend your time meeting new people from different places.

Einstein’s Riddle:Einstein wrote the following riddle. He said that 98% of the world could not solve it. But several NIEHS scientists were able to solve it, and they said it’s not all that hard if you pay attention and are very patient. Give it a try:

There are 5 houses in 5 different colors in a row. In each house lives a person with a different nationality. The 5 owners drink a certain type of beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigar, and keep a certain pet. No owners have the same pet, smoke the same brand of cigar, or drink the same beverage. Other facts:

1. The Brit lives in the red house. 2. The Swede keeps dogs as pets. 3. The Dane drinks tea. 4. The green house is on the immediate left of the white house. 5. The green house’s owner drinks coffee. 6. The owner who smokes Pall Mall rears birds. 7. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill. 8. The owner living in the center house drinks milk.

10. The owner who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats. 11. The owner who keeps the horse lives next to the one who smokes Dunhill. 12. The owner who smokes Bluemasters drinks beer. 13. The German smokes Prince. 14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house. 15. The owner who smokes Blends lives next to the one who drinks water.

The question is: WHO OWNS THE FISH?

Eggsactly What HappenedScience brain teasers require understanding of the physical or biological world and the laws that govern it.Sam Rottenegger got some free tickets to go and see his least favorite band. Sam, feeling a little unruly, stopped at the corner store so he could bring a 1/2 dozen eggs with him to the concert. The concert was packed and the tunes were so loud that Sam could hardly stand it. He started making his way through the crowd when one of the eggs broke in his pocket and ran down the inside of his shirt. Sam squirmed with disgust but thought how great it would be to see that yellow ooze on the band members. It took him 60 grueling minutes to make his way close enough to launch his attack. Sam chucked one right at the bass player but it just bounced off him without breaking. “Odd,” Sam thought, but every one of the 4 eggs he threw just landed unbroken. He never got to throw the 5th as security removed Sam promptly. Sam, now half deaf, bruised, battered, and confused looked closely at the egg and noticed it wasn’t exactly raw anymore. Frustrated, Sam chucked

gladly gave him a free nights stay at the Bars Inn. So what happened to the eggs that caused them not to break? Note that they were totally raw when he brought them in.

Grandma and the TrollsYou are on your way to visit your Grandma, who lives at the end of the valley. It’s her birthday, and you want to give her the cakes you’ve made.Between your house and her house, you have to cross 7 bridges, and as it goes in the land of make believe, there is a troll under every bridge! Each troll, quite rightly, insists that you pay a troll toll. Before you can cross their bridge, you have to give them half of the cakes you are carrying, but as they are kind trolls, they each give you back a single cake.

How many cakes do you have to leave home with to make sure that you arrive at Grandma’s with exactly 2 cakes?

frequently that even Santa probably has a hard time keeping up. 2010 was no exception with celebs showing out, showing off and showing up. Some were naughty, some were nice, but all made headlines, broke boundaries and made moments to remember. Our top ten naughty vs. nice celebrity moments of 2010.

10. Michelle ObamaFirst lady Michelle Obama was about as nice as they come this year when she announced in February the launch of her “Let’s Move!” campaign initiative which aims to end child-hood obesity. The initiative has the goal of “solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation so that children born today will reach adulthood at a healthy weight.” As part of the campaign, the First Lady has given speeches at schools, participated in soccer clinics, and called attention to food deserts in the United States.

9. T.I.

of jail and seemed resolved to make full turn-around, to never spend another minute behind bars and to be a good roll model for his own kids and his fans. Sadly Tip was naughty, it seemed as quickly as he was released he went back when several parole violations landed him in jail …again. Why Tip why??? Now we like T.I. and everything, but seriously his next album is going to have to be called “The How To Return to Jail in Record Time LP”. With Lil Wayne spending most of the year in prison on weapons charges and Gucci Mane being recently incarcerated as well, 2010 has been a big year for jailed rappers. Hopefully they’ll all do better in 2011, changing their lives in order to get and remain free.

8. Nicki MinajNicki has been naughty and nice, and despite what Santa may or may not think 2010 has

She has had perhaps more than her share of controversy as rumors have swirled around about some of everything from, whether or not she has fake body parts, to who she’s may or may not be involved with, to beef she may

have with other artists. But whether people are

talking. Whatever happens in the future Nicki -

es on some of the year’s biggest songs; making

on the Billboard Hot 100 chart simultaneously. She also was nominated for and/or won a slew

she would close the year out with her debut album Pink Friday. Love her or hate her no one

7. The Chilean MinersThese are guys I’m pretty sure never thought they’d be in any way famous. But if they weren’t celebs before they certainly are now. The world literally stopped and watched as 33 men were pulled from the ground after being trapped for 69 days. Now, as the story unfolded we learned that some had been pretty naughty before the accident, while others were nice through and through, in the way that trag-edy often changes people, we’re betting they’ve all seen the light in more ways than one and expect to see them continue to spread hope and inspiration for some time to come.

6. Lebron JamesSay it ain’t so Lebron! The NBA star made headlines over his decision to spurn Cleveland for the Miami Heat and the subsequent ESPN hour-long special. Haters and fans alike cried

-liers dishonorable and the extended special just way too much of a spectacle. Basketball legends such as Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson criticized the move The Cavaliers general manager almost im-mediately published an open letter to fans, de-

less”, “callous”, and “cowardly betrayal”, while guaranteeing that the Cavs would win an NBA title before the “self-declared former King.” Of course he also gains tons of new fans in Miami. Now fans and non-fans are waiting to see if the move paid off. Only time will tell

Bonus: The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics in a nail-biting seven game

back championships. Nice!.

5. Shaun WhiteOne word: sick! At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, White repeated his 2006 gold

high enough score to secure the gold medal without a second run. He performed his sec-ond run anyway, as a victory lap, ending his run with a well-anticipated Double McTwist 1260 which he named The Tomahawk (So nice it was a little naughty). This second run resulted in a record score of 48.4 (50 is the highest possible score) enlarging his margin of victory. His nearest competitor won the silver with a points total of 45.0, 3.4 behind White. Dusting your competition? Super nice!

4. Lindsey LohanOver the past year, Lindsay’s arrest, jail, rehab cycle, has reloaded so many times the tabloids seem to have a never end-ing supply of new Lindsay pictures on her “downward spiral”. The sheer frequency of her incidents and the resulting drama has permeated the media so severely that its sparked public debates on what constitutes “news”. It started out nice. In January Lindsay tried to help raise money for charity, then she tried to sue E*Trade for $100 million (the case was settled). In May 2010, Lohan did not appear for a scheduled DUI progress report hearing. The judge issued a bench warrant for Lohan’s arrest, but rescinded the warrant after Lohan’s repre-sentatives posted bail. Lohan’s lawyer said her passport was stolen while she attended the Cannes Film Festival in France (what?).

showed up for) Lohan was ordered to attend weekly alcohol education classes, wear an alcohol-monitoring bracelet, refrain from drinking alcohol, and undergo random week-

ly drug tests to remain free on bail. At Lohan’s probation hearing, the judge determined that Lohan had indeed violated the terms of her probation and sentenced her to 90 days in jail (of which she only served 14); in addition, the judge ordered Lohan to check into an inpatient rehab program for three months after her re-

that she failed a drug test. She was denied bail and sent back to jail but was released after posting $300,000 bail. She was required to wear a SCRAM bracelet and “stay away from establishments that primarily sell alcohol.” A judge ordered her to remain in rehab until January 3, 2011. We hate to call this naughty because it’s just so sad, Get better Lindsay.

3. Lady GagaThis should probably be everything she wore in all of 2010 but the raw meat dress she wore at the 2010 MTV VMAs was the pinnacle

Lady Gaga. The vegetarian and vegan crowd screamed “naughty” (even sparking the design of a “veggie” dress or two). Those in favor of shock said “nice”. The dress was made out of raw meat and …. Um … yeah you kind of get stuck after that don’t you? Are there enough words to describe it? No. Will you forget it? No. Amongst an array of get-ups that got their fair share of buzz, this one took the cake. You know that somewhere a smug Lady Gaga looked at all that attention and said “nice.”

2. Kanye West and Taylor SwiftThe 2010 VMAs not only delivered raw meat in dress form, it also let us all witness round two of last year’s drama. Kanye West was so naughty last year that even a year later the drama was still fresh. He

prefaced his performance in 2010 by using his Twitter to again – offer his apologies to Taylor Swift for his rude behavior when he rushed the stage and interrupted her acceptance speech during last year’s MTV award show. At

with video clips of the infamous onstage dis by West. Though Kanye is never named in the song, the singer gave an emotional perfor-mance that made obvious references to the rapper; afterward the singer was met with a standing ovation. But West got the last word (lyric?) as he closed the show with “Runaway.” The comeback performance appeared to have earned him the redemption he was looking for – the cheering crowd began to loudly chant

happens when you’re nice?!

1. Hollywood and HaitiJanuary 12, 2010 a catastrophic 7.0 earth-quake, struck approximately 16 miles west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake; the Haitian government reported that an estimat-ed 230,000 people had died, 300,000 had been injured and 1,000,000 made homeless. The world watched the death and destruction,

responded to appeals for humanitarian aid, pledging funds and dispatching rescue and medical teams, engineers and support per-sonnel. Hollywood too, showed that it cared; loudly. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie jumped in early, pledging $1million. Haitian born Wyclef Jean set up Yele Haiti to take dona-tions via text message, the support for which crashed the Yele servers. Celebrities such as Madonna, Diddy, Chris Martin (from ColdPlay) George Clooney and dozens more offered money, star power or both to the cause. The rebuilding effort in Haiti is far from over, but

seeing people give back is, well, nice.

Are you Naughty or nice ? Your Result: Tally up how many A’s, B’s and C’s you got.

Mostly Cs – SUPER NAUGHTYYou may not be the nicest person, no offense. “Santa” isn’t giving you many gifts this year, in fact you kind of scare him … and all the reindeer. So try to be nicer! Its all about being wild and crazy to you. You are willing to break the rules and aren’t afraid to get your hands (or the rest of you) dirty when opportunity knocks. Try every once in a while to listen to that little angel on your shoulder who keeps saying “no!”. It’s okay to be nice sometimes!

Mostly Bs – KINDA NAUGHTYYou are on the naughty list, but just by a little bit! You may not be a saint just yet but you try to be good and try to treat others as you expect to be treated. You are still susceptible to “naughty” moments so watch it. You’re trying but Santa is still disappointed in you. (you are still on the naughty list after all) If you’re extra sweet you may have just enough time to get on that nice list. Time to get moving!

Mostly As – angelically good
