ArchitectsThis year, be sure to make it to the Hometown Holidays festival in down-town Redwood City on December 3, 2011� Downtown streets will be filled with activities all day including a snow play lot, photos with Santa, musical and dance entertainment, a kiddie carnival, a professional ice sculpting demonstration, and vendor booths. The day culminates with a Children’s Parade, tree lighting and firework spectacular.

Hometown Holidays is sponsored by the Redwood City Downtown Business Group (DBG), to encourage the community to come downtown to visit won-derful stores and restaurants while enjoying the entertainment. The DBG manages the event, and provides funding and volunteers to host the activities. Additional major sponsors include the Redwood City Civic Cultural Com-mission and the Redwood City Redevelo pment Agency. The Redwood City DBG is a coalition of over 90 local businesses who work together to give back to the community and introduce people to downtown Red-wood City through events and communi-ty activities. The DBG also collaborates with the City of Redwood City to resolve issues and improve the downtown ex-perience for business owners, residents and visitors. In addition to Hometown Holidays, the DBG also hosts the Salsa Festival in September and participates in the PAL Blues Festival and the weekly summer music concerts in Courthouse Square. These events attract thousands of people to our beautiful downtown, which helps businesses thrive and makes Red-wood City a fun and vibrant place to live. Hoover: A Community SchoolBy Amanda Rothengast, Hoover Principal

As a K-8 school with just over 900 students, Hoover is currently the largest school in the Redwood City School District� We are a community school where many partners work closely with our school on a daily basis to support the needs of our students and families. It is amazing that we have more than 50 partners provid-ing services for Hoover families, ranging from the Second Harvest’s monthly fresh produce distribution to our week-ly parent education classes� Last year alone, Second Harvest donated and distributed more than 95,000 pounds of fruits and vegetable to Hoover, valued at $157,000� Our parent classes are al-ways full, especially the Canada Col-lege English classes where more than 100 parents take classes each semester to learn English�From the month of November, I would like to share two strong examples of outstanding community partners sup-porting Hoover. On Nov. 1st, Center for New Generation hosted the Youth of the Year contest for our eighth-grade students at the Boys and Girls Club. The eighth-grade finalists — Omar Avellan, Jocelyn Prieto, Kevin Cano, Oscar Batres and Andrea Fuentes — were selected after writing essays and re-

ceiving teacher recommendations. On the evening of the event, a panel of com-munity judges (including School Board Trustee Shelly Masur) interviewed the scholars separately� Afterwards, each student presented a speech to a large crowd about their goals and their fu-ture. After a long, difficult deliberation, the judges selected Omar Avellan to be Hoover’s Youth of the Year. On Nov. 8th, Omar, along with the other Boys and Girls Youth of the Year honorees for our region, continued on to compete for a scholarship. In front of packed house, Omar was selected as the region’s Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year� Way to go, Omar! This is just one example of how the Boys and Girls Club, as our part-ner, provides leadership opportunities for our students�This past month, we also had an incred-ible example of how community mem-

Como una escuela K-8 con sólo alrededor de 900 estudiantes, Hoover es ac-tualmente la escuela más grande en el Distrito de Escuelas de Redwood City� Somos una escuela comunitaria donde muchos socios trabajan en conjunto con la escuela a diario para apoyar las necesidades de los estudiantes y las familias� Es sorprendente que tengamos más de 50 socios proporcionando servicios para

las familias Hoover, en el rango de la distribución de la pro-ducción fresca mensual de la Segunda Cosecha hasta nuestras clases semanales de educación para los padres. Solo el año pasado, la Segunda Cosecha donó y distribuyó más de 95,000 libras de frutas y vegetales a Hoover, avaluadas en $157,000. Nuestras clases de padres siempre están llenas, especialmente las clases de inglés de la Universidad de Canadá donde más de 100 padres toman clases cada semestre para aprender inglés.Del mes de noviembre, me gustaría compartir dos ejemplos de socios sobresalientes de la comunidad que apoyan a Hoover. Our Walking School Bus: A Healthy, Safe Way to Come to School

By Jana Kiser, Hoover Community School CoordinatorThe Walking School Bus is a program spearheaded by Redwood City 2020 and Hoover Community School that promotes walking to school safely. Once a week, volunteers and students meet at a specified time and location and walk to school together. The volunteers are family members of Hoover students and, with the Redwood City Verde Program Assistant, they lead the Walking School Bus.This program helps students walk safely to school on a route that can be danger-ous for children walking alone. The Walking School Bus also promotes physical fitness, reduces traffic congestion near the school, and provides an opportunity for everyone involved to build a united commu-nity� The students who participate feel especial-ly excited to go to school on the Walking School Bus day, and they say they feel more awake and ready for school after walking with the group�Volunteers are grateful for the opportunity to meet other adults in the community, and those who struggle to find the time to walk with their children appreciate knowing that their child will arrive at school safely.

La mañana del 15 de octubre tuve el gran privile-gio de unirme a casi 900 corredores y caminantes en el primer Medio Maratón y 5K/caminata de Ok-tobeRun - el primero de su tipo en la península en muchos años.Yo estaba tan orgullosa de ver a tantos maestros, personal e incluso estudiantes en representación de nuestro distrito� De hecho, la maestra de cuarto grado de Clifford (¡Maestra del año del Condado de San Mateo en 2010!) Shannon Cody ganó la división fe-menina, y se colocó en el décimo puesto de la gen-eral en el medio maratón, ¡Completando 13�1 millas en casi exactamente 90 minutos!Desde la plaza de la Corte hasta Redwood Shores y vuelta, los corredores disfrutaron del perfecto clima de California y fueron vitoreados a lo largo del cami-no por muchos estudiantes de la escuela secundaria Sequoia que ofreció parte de su fin de semana para dirigir el tráfico peatonal y mostrar su apoyo. The morning of October 15th I had the great priv-ilege of joining almost 900 fellow runners and walkers in the Redwood City Education Founda-tion’s first ever OktobeRun Half Marathon and 5K Run/Walk – the first of its kind on the penin-sula in many years� I was so proud to see so many teachers, staff, and even students representing our district. In fact, Clifford 4th grade teacher (and San Mateo Coun-ty’s 2010 Teacher of the Year) Shannon Cody won the women’s division, and was the tenth place overall finisher in the half marathon, com-pleting 13�1 miles in almost exactly 90 minutes! From Courthouse Square to Redwood Shores and back, racers enjoyed perfect California weather and were cheered along the route by many Sequoia High School students who offered part of their weekend to direct foot traffic and show their support� The race also coincided with Redwood City’s annual Peninsula Oktoberfest, so many participants took advantage of the fes-tival’s proximity to run in German costume and afterward toast the race’s completion with great food and entertainment�It was also heartening to see the great show of support from the Redwood City community – from race organizers Rick Hunter, Ron Talain, and the rest of our amazing RCEF volunteers, to the local small businesses and families who generously sponsored the event. Early estimates indicate that this first-time event raised an in-credible $25,000 for our students! I hope that the OktobeRun becomes an annual tradition here in Redwood City, and I want to personally extend my appreciation to everyone who volunteered, ran, walked, sponsored or oth-erwise contributed to this wonderful communi-ty-building event.Sincerely, Jan Christensen Superintendent

Getting the Most from Your Holiday Photos By Cheryl ShepardIt's almost that wonderful time of year again - lots of celebrating, getting together with family and friends near and far, giving and receiving gifts and good cheer. As you prepare for all the festivities, also prepare to capture those priceless fleet-ing moments that only happen during the holidays. So find your camera and make a plan! 1�) Get out your camera now� 2�) Make sure the battery is charged� 3�) Free up space on your memory card by downloading old pictures to your computer� 4.) Do you have enough space on your card to take all the pictures you need? Al-ways have an extra memory card on hand. And don't skimp; even small cameras can take 12-megapixel pictures that fill up cards quickly. Get at least a 2-gigabyte card; 4 or 8 gigabytes is even better.5.) If you don't take pictures very often, then brush up. Get out the manual and review some of the basic functions you'll use and then practice. 6.) The day before the event check your battery again and put your camera in a spot that's handy for you to grab when the moments arrive. More Tips * Don’t forget about you. If you are always the picture taker, have someone share the picture-taking job so you don't get left out. You'll be glad you did when you look at the pictures years from now� * Take pictures at the beginning of the event when everyone looks good. Once everyone has arrived, take the group shot before everyone is full, tired, and rum-pled. And don’t forget to take lots of candid pictures throughout the event. * Fill the frame -- more people, less wall. Zoom in or move closer to your subject, take the picture, then get closer still and take another one� * Get low or on the floor when taking pictures of kids. Be ready for those price-less expressions and please avoid telling the kids to smile. Have a great holiday season and take lots of pictures!

bers give many hours and resources to make a true impact at Hoover. Girl Scouts Troop 30329, currently seniors at Woodside and Summit high schools, selected Hoover School to earn their Gold Award. The Gold Award is given to troop mem-bers who each complete 80 hours of volunteer service on one community project. Each troop member selected one project to plan and coordinate at Hoover. The largest project, a new mural, was designed and painted over four Sundays. They also planted new succulents around the school, donated new wooden garden beds and worked with Recology to improve our recycle program. On Nov. 4, they fa-cilitated a day of after-school activities, where students learned more about top-ics like recycling and making good healthy choices. The students also collected library books, playground balls and raised $3,000 towards our future purchase of an electronic marquee sign for the front of our school. Hoover extends a big thank you to Gabby Goldstein, Camille Stroe, Michelle Tanner, Elayne Hoy-smith, Shannon Koop, Athena Zouzounis, Ryan Mainz, Emily Danko, Margot Gorrin and muralist Sloane Joseph. You each showed what it truly means to give back to the community. These are two examples of the community involvement at Hoover. There are many more partners who support the Hoover Community -- listing them all would fill this entire page. With our amazing dedicated staff, our wonderful parents and our incredible community partners, our path towards academic ex-cellence continues at Hoover Community School.

Woodside y Summit, seleccionó la Escuela Hoover para obtener el Premio de Oro. El Premio de Oro es dado a los miembros de la tropa que completan 80 horas de servicio de voluntariado en un proyecto comunitario.
