The Salem FCC Players, a cast and chorus of over 50 members directed by Judy Dyer, have prepared a truly delightful, funny and touching Broadway-style musical.
We hope you will put it on your calendars, invite your friends and families, and come for a unique and refreshingly new Advent experience.
The show is FREE! It is being given to church and community friends as our way of spreading the good news of Jesus’ birth during this Christmas season. As another way of sharing and caring, a free-will offering will be taken to benefit Hurricane Sandy victims through Week of Compassion.
Let the Children Come . . . Please join us on Sunday, December 16, at the 11:00 am worship service as our children bless us with song and scripture reading.
Come to the Advent Experience Faire Sunday, December 9
9:45-10:45 am and 11:00 am-12:00 pm
You are invited to a special craft time for you and your children. This is a delightful time for parents or grandparents to share Advent crafts, missions, and treats with the children.
Bites of Bread from Bob As we move from Thanksgiving to Advent, it is interesting to note that the same Pilgrims who started our tradition of Thanksgiving did not have favorable feelings toward the observance of Christmas. Almost forty years after they landed at Plymouth, Massachu-setts, they established a law that actually fined people for celebrating Christmas. The popularity of Christ-mas caused them to repeal this law a couple of years later, but religious opposition to the date remained into the next century. This opposition was due to some of the pagan origins of Christmas practices.
Germans in Pennsylvania claim to have brought the Christmas tree tradition to America in 1821. Early trees were decorated with fruits, nuts, popcorn, toys and candles. My mother recalls they would put up a tree on Christmas Eve and light the can-dles for a short time before needing to extinguish them again. This year our Christmas theme is “The Many Trees of Christmas.” Five of our trees will be drop-off sites for giving. See insert for more details. Advent sermons will be based upon the Family Tree of Jesus. Yes, that long, seemingly boring, list of names that we find at the beginning of Matthew and in the 3rd chapter of Luke. Those names represent people whose lives were anything but boring and it is a surprise to find some of the names in the lineage of Jesus.
The tradition of poinsettias came from our neighbors to the south. Poinsettias are traced back to a village in Mexico. According to the legend, it was custom-ary for villagers to place gifts by the nativity scene. One boy, too poor to offer anything, knelt to pray outside. On the ground where he knelt, the legend says, a beautiful poinsettia plant grew. The boy took
the flower into the church and presented it as a gift to the Christ child.
While growing up, I was told to never abbreviate Christmas as Xmas. Do you know how hard it is to mark some of those boxes of Christmas decorations with all of those letters? I was pleased to discover the the abbreviation of “Xmas” has been around for a long time. Early Christians used the letter “X” as the first letter in the Greek word for Christ: Christos. By the early 1700s, “Xmas” was widely used by Christians and it was understood to mean “Christ’s Mass.” So, I would say it is probably safe to mark your Christmas decoration boxes as “Xmas.”
Christmas is the only reli-gious holiday in America that is also a national legal
holiday. Alabama was the first state to declare Christmas an official holiday in 1863. By 1890 all the other states followed suit. It is good to remember that the word “holiday” was originally “Holy Day.” As you celebrate this Holy day of holidays, think on the words of Wilda English: “God grant you the light in Christmas, which is faith; the warmth of Christmas, which is love; the radiance of Christmas, which is purity; the righteousness of Christmas, which is justice; the belief in Christmas, which is truth; and all of Christmas, which is Christ.” (Source: Christianity Today, 1995)
God Bless, Pastor Bob

December 9– In the Book of Ruth, we continue in our advent series based on the genealogy of Jesus, we find the grandmother of King David. While the ending of the book may remind you of a Hallmark movie, the book is also filled with grief. How do we deal with grief in a season that seems so focused on Joy?
December 16– Luke 1:46-55, Mary's song makes several mentions of "generations." And yet, in Luke's genealogy, Mary is not even mentioned. Protestants and Catholics treat Mary's presence differently as well. What can we learn from her place in the lineage of Jesus?

For Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie Our Genesis study is finished in Sunday school and now we are preparing our hearts for the Advent sea-son. I want to thank Betty Charnholm for all her hard work putting together the lessons for the preschool and kindergarten classes. Thanks also to Kim Otis and Kim Resch for teaching.
The JYF Progressive “Lunner” was a fun time for all who participated. Thank you to our host families: Endlers, Bighams, and Hannas, for your hospitality. Big thanks to the Towery Trio for blessing us with your safe and fun chauffeuring and guidance abilities.
Coming up: ADVENT EXPERIENCE FAIRE: Sunday, December 9. The children will be dismissed from the 9:30 am service to sing with Christine and Ms. Kim. At approximately 10:00 am, we will experience the tastes, sounds and sights of the Advent season by sharing hands-on crafts, snacks and stories with our parents and grandparents.
On December 16, the children will have the opportu-nity to share their gifts with the congregation during the 11:00 am service. The Cherubs, led by Ms. Kim Resch, will start us off with their favorite Christmas songs. During the service, the school children will have an opportunity to share select songs from the play, “Aloha Christmas,” with Christine Sinibaldi. This will be our special music as part of the worship service. Please come and be blessed.
Any time with children is a blessing. Thank you for your children!
In His name, Laurie Dyer
Flurries from Chris Advent and Christmas are two seasons filled with traditions observed by communities, churches, families and individuals. This past Sunday that youth participated in one such tradition for our church and our community. They served as the Living Nativity Scene for the Advent Walk. What a way to kick off the advent season.
I am finding myself in a time of new traditions. As Jenn and I are entering into our first Christmas as a married couple, we are finding the need to create some traditions of our own. The biggest one is having our own tree in our apartment, and as I remember all the ornaments that Bob showed us on Sunday that marked special moments in the Hanna family. Jenn and I are both looking for ways to make this year a year to begin new traditions.
As you, your families and friends are entering into this season, I would invite you into a time of celebrating old traditions but also to start some new ones that will make this year special for you and your families. Maybe you could take on one of the many projects of the church this Advent season to give something to those in need. Or perhaps you could get a group together and spread some Christmas cheer by singing your favorite carols in neighborhoods or care facilities.
In this time of darkness a light shines within us through Jesus Christ. Let us spread that light and make it become a blaze of glory throughout our community as we eagerly await the coming of the Christ Child.
Knox Brothers in Concert The Knox Brothers are having another concert on January 14 in Lebanon with the Dixie Melody Boys from Kinston, N.C. This is a 3-hour concert, from 7:00–10:00 pm. The cost is $10 at the door.
Please contact the church office if you want to ride the church bus.

Service Sunday Announcement On December 30 we will join together for both a Christmas Sunday service and a Service Sunday. What a way to celebrate the arrival of the Christ Child!
We will join together at 10:00 am for a single wor-ship service. At 11:00 am we will begin our time of service as we assemble various kits with the supplies gathered from the Many Trees of Christmas.
As we assemble the kits, a soup lunch will be pro-vided. We invite all of you to bring Christmas good-ies you would like to share or have out of your home before the New Year begins.
Donations Now Being Accepted Bring your books, games, puzzles, videos, DVDs, CDs, tapes, and plastic bags to the Fellowship Hall for the February Book Sale. (No encyclopedias, please.)
Proceeds benefit Christian Women’s Fellowship mission projects.
Check It Out! Recently I have been listening to an audio tape by Becky Teribassi that was hidden on the shelves in the library when I became librarian. I almost discarded it because it was an “outdated cassette tape” and also because it was a women’s conference message for the Methodist Church, not a professionally made audio. However, as I listened to her message of continual encouragement to have a daily encounter with the living, loving God, through prayer and scripture read-ing, I was touched deeply and convicted to follow her example. Consequently, I transferred her message onto a CD so it is more useable and I placed it in the library in hopes that her testimony and message will be inspiring and convicting for you as well. The title of Becky’s message is “A Daily Encounter with the Living, Loving God.” You may find this CD on the front shelf of the library.
