Second month: Physical disability

Page 3: December

Primary School of Potamia, Thassos

In our group were added the students of 6th grade. On December 3rd we held a speech-debate. This date was established as the International Day for Persons with Disabilities by the General Assembly UN 1992. December 3 is not a day for feasts and celebrations. It is one day a day of reflection. Its aim is to recall the obvious, that respect for the dignity of each individual and the right to a decent life is nonnegotiable for all and non amenable discounts !!!

Page 4: December

The speech brief, but comprehensive, was mainly aimed at removing stereotypes and prejudices. We watched the presentation in powerpoint and discussed. The students expressed their views. A special moment was when three students of 6th grade showed us an interview that they had taken the previous year by Alexander Taxildaris. They told us how they experienced this activity, what they thought when they went to get the interview, what they thought when he finished the interview, etc

Also, we thought that the International Day for the persons with Disabilities was a great day to bring our students into contact with a child of their own age, who is disabled.

In one of the schools we work with attending a very smiling boy, David. Is 9 years old and u has cerebral palsy. The teacher, Isabel sent us a video to show us the daily life of the school. At this point it is worth noting that in his country there are special schools. Therefore, David attends school in his neighborhood.

We contacted the school of Portugal via Skype and had a great time !!! The moment we saw David holding the Greek flag was very moving !!! We said hello in Greek. We sang the song Rudolph the fawn in Portuguese and we sang the same in Greek. In closing our conversation sang Portuguese Christmas song «A todos um bom Natal».

Christmas in our school festival sang in Greek, English, Spanish and Portuguese. Also, we said prayers in Greek sign language.

In physical education did two very nice activities. The first activity was jumping without forums where children in the beginning used their hands to have better balance. The second time performing the jump with his hands behind his back, which made their landing considerably more difficult, as without the help of hands fell down. The second activity was the basketball with one hand. Children hid their one arm through the shirt and played with only one hand. All acknowledged and understood the difficulties faced by a person with disabilities not only in sports but also in everyday life tou. But nothing can prevent it deals with activities that delight !!!

3rd of December:

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Page 19: December

• From the GM UN in 1992 established the December 3 of each year as World Day for Persons with Disabilities in order to remind that we all need to respect the dignity of each individual. The right to a decent life is nonnegotiable for all.

• On this day, therefore, a variety of events organized around the world with the aim of informing the general public.

• Types of disability:

Blindness, deafness, physical disability, mental disability

Page 20: December

People with disabilities do not have special needs, but the same needs as those without disabilities. They need food, water, shelter, clothing… They need healthy interpersonal relationships, acceptance, friends, equal opportunities

Therefore, the needs of a person with disabilities is exactly the same as a person without a disability!!!

Page 21: December

People with disabilities do not have special skills, but they may have talent

But their talents are not the result of disability. They have to do with the slope of each person. So, as a person who sees can have some musical talent, so a person with blindness may have some talent in music

If the disability was related to the talent of someone, then there would be universality. Eg all people with blindness should have a special talent in music

Page 22: December

About education ...

Page 23: December

Can a person with blindness learn to read and write?

Of course, by using the reading and writing system of Braille.

Page 24: December

Can a person with deafness learn to read and write?

Of course, by using the sign language.

Page 25: December

Can a person with a physical disability learn to read and write?

Of course! The fact that he/she is not walking or not having two legs/arms, is not related to intelligence.

Page 26: December

Can a person with intellectual disabilities learn to read and write?

Of course, as long as the teacher uses the appropriate training methods and strategies.

Students with Down syndrome are able to learn to read and write and generally they have very good academic record, if they receive suitable training !!!

Page 27: December

So maybe the difficulties faced by a person with a disability are more concerned with what's provided each time by the society in which

he/she is located less than his/her own disability?
