A Letter from Fr. Bart... It has become a commonplace for writers and commentators to bemoan the decline of the family. Numerous

examples and reasons are trotted out in support of their thesis. But the bottom line for many of them is that family life is going to hell-in-a-handbasket in our country. So we need to band together and defend family values, whatever they are.

From my perspective, what is surprising – even miraculous – is not that families experience difficulties and challenges, but the fact that they are able to survive them and move through them as well as they often do. The pressures on families seem to come from two general sources: external pressures and internal pressures.

The external pressures are legion; they come with the territory of living in a modern culture. The author, Lizabeth Cohen, has written on the politics of mass consumption in postwar America. She wrote, “We are tethered to our e-mail, day and night. We are rarely out of cell phone range. Long working hours extend into evenings and weekends…. Studies reveal that Americans do an average of 350 hours (the equivalent of almost nine 40-hour weeks) more work each year than Europeans…. Stress-induced illnesses are rampant…. We have turned our homework and activity-burdened older children and ourselves into workaholics, multitasking 24/7. What are we trying to prove?” Though she wrote this in 2003, her point still holds.

Those are just some of the external pressures. The internal ones are also enormous: owning and maintaining a home with its mortgage and costs of upkeep; making enough money to be comfortable, and to save enough for college education and retirement; in-laws and extended family’s demands and expectations; raising children and giving them a firm foundation upon which to build their lives; everyday communication and miscommunication in a wired world; illness. The list of internal pressures can also go on and on.

As I say, it seems miraculous – given all the pressures families face – that they stay together and are somehow able to grow. But, truth be told, family pressures and challenges are nothing new. Look at the family from Nazareth 2000 years ago: a betrothed man feels jilted; the family has to seek refuge in a foreign country and then hide out in Nazareth after returning; their child runs away in Jerusalem; the mother cannot understand her son’s plans in Cana; the family thinks the son is out of his mind and tries to bring him home; the son is arrested and executed while still in his prime; his mother is left in the care of a non-relative. The Holy Family faced tremendous pressures and challenges, too. But they stayed connected because of their faith in a loving God who would never abandon them.

What the Holy Family had, and what we also have, is a distinct faith response to the challenges and pressures that come with being part of a family. (And I use family in the broadest sense; there is an almost infinite variety of families in our culture. All share in common the internal and external challenges.) That faith response includes prayer, gratitude, forbearance and forgiveness.

To live in a family is wonderful, but it is also very challenging. It always has been. Given that, it seems like a miracle that they stay together as they do. Or perhaps it’s not a miracle. Perhaps it is simply faith, the faith that opens our hearts in prayer, gratitude and forgiveness, the faith that draws us together to be fed and strengthened in the Eucharist. On this Feast of the Holy Family, may God bless us with grateful, prayerful, forgiving hearts that enable us to meet the challenges and celebrate the joys that come with being members of the human family.

“O Come Let Us Adore Him"

This Friday, January 5th, there will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament starting right after the 8:15 a.m. Mass and ending with Benediction at 7:00 p.m. The sign up

chart is in the vestibule this weekend. There are open time slots that need to be filled: 3:00, 3:30, 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. Please prayerfully consider signing up for one of these time slots for the whole year of 2018; twelve first Fridays. This weekend, we will have the sign up for one hour time commitments starting on the half hour or hour. Sign up for 3:00 and stay until 4:00 or 3:30 and stay until 4:30. If you can only commit to a half hour, please write “1/2 hour” after your name on the sign-up sheet. Please plan on what time is best for you. After you have signed your name to the Adoration chart you will receive the dates for 2018, calendar reminder stickers and a prayer card about First Friday devotions. Since there must be someone in Church during the Adoration hours; we need people to sign up to be substitutes. We need the name and phone number for anyone committing to a time slot or agreeing to be a substitute. Please fill out the form in back of Church. Friday is the Feast Day of St. John Neumann, the first male American saint. He established the first system of diocesan schools in the United States. As Bishop of Philadelphia, he opened on average, one church a month. After eight years of intense pastoral activity, he collapsed. He was canonized in 1977. We should come and pray to him in thanksgiving for fostering the Christian education of youth and be thankful for our Blue Ribbon School. So please spend some time this Friday with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Short visits are always welcomed. Come and enjoy the silence. Your time will be well spent. Our Savior is born. Come let us adore Him!

“…as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive.” - COLOSSIANS 3:13

Forgiveness – one of the hardest things for people to do. It’s amazing how long we can hold a grudge or be angry with someone. As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, take this opportunity to give the gift of forgiveness to someone - maybe someone in your family, maybe a friend, maybe a co-worker or neighbor or, maybe yourself. Pick up the phone or text someone right now.

Family Faith Formation Update

Our new Family Faith Formation program is off to a great start! We have over 40 families registered with children who attend either our parish school or other schools. Every first Tuesday of the month our parents gather to learn a particular topic and then they go home and teach their children. On the last Sunday of the month all our families come together (with children) for fun activities based on that month’s topic. The theme for our first year together is the Creed. If you would like to learn more about our Family Faith Formation program, feel free to contact our Coordinator of Religious Education, Lourdes Ryczek at [email protected] or Fr. Dom at [email protected]. __________________________________________________________________
