Come and Learn, Come and Listen, Come and Ask Questions, Come and Offer Compassion

For nearly a half century, the Catholic Church in the United States has celebrated and promoted National Migration Week in January, which is an opportu-nity for the Church to reflect on the circumstances confronting migrants, including immigrants, refugees, children, and victims and survivors of human traffick-ing. Catholics are called to stand with new American immigrants as our brothers and sisters. This is who we are. This is what we do. The theme for National Migration Week 2017, January 8 – January 14, draws attention to Pope Francis' call to create a culture of encounter, and in doing so to look beyond our own needs and wants to those of others around us. In the homily given at his first Pentecost as pope, he emphasized the importance of encounter in the Christian faith: "For me this word is very important. Encounter with others. Why? Because faith is an encounter with Jesus, and we must do what Jesus does: encounter others."With respect to migrants and refugees, too often in our contemporary culture we fail to encounter them as persons, and instead look at them as others. We do not take the time to engage these people in a meaningful way, but remain aloof to their

presence and suspicious of their intentions. During this National Migration Week, let us all take the opportunity to engage migrants as children of God who are worthy of our attention and support. We are providing three amazing opportunities during the week for hearing stories of refugees and migrants. Please come to one or more event. Bring your listening heart and your questions so that you might have a better understanding of the pain and promise within the lives of these individuals.

Please RSVP for each event via the parish receptionist at 919-847-8205. January 9, 7:00-9:00pmAn Evening with Refugees, resettled in Raleigh Anthony Hall Founders Room at St. Francis

All Family New Year’s Concert – Cooper Ray

The shortest of the four gospels, Mark is the earliest account of Jesus’ life. With no mention of Jesus’ infancy, Mark begins with Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan by John and climaxes with the announcement of his resurrection to the women at the tomb. Mark asks everyone to answer Jesus’ question, ‘Who do you say that I

am?’ and challenges believers in every generation to accept the harsh reality of the cross. Mark, along with Matthew and Luke, is one of the synoptic gospels. It is the primary gospel of year ‘B’ in the Catholic Church’s liturgical cycle, the year that we are about to enter this Advent. Join us on this exciting journey! The materials we are using are from the Little Rock Scripture Study series. Our annual Advent Giving Tree gift drive was such a huge success. More than 2,100 ornaments, each representing a gift to someone in need, were displayed on the trees and all of them were taken!!! It’s been just beautiful to see the gifts get returned to our parish and then redistributed to families throughout the Raleigh community.

Thanks to the generosity of parishioners, hundreds of families in the Raleigh community will receive gifts this Christ-mas. Several community organizations will benefit as well, with restocking of their clothes closets, food pantries, or stocks of school supplies.

Children receiving outpatient services at Duke Children’s Hospital had their day brightened with two Christmas parties December 6 and December 19 that included a visit to Santa and Mrs. Claus (who are also parishioners, Joe and Geannie Slifer). Each child received one of the gifts we donated. The 1st graders at the Franciscan School and our own

music ministers Jim Wahl and Jenn Fi-duccia sang carols for a couple of hours each, and donations from Costco and our Knights of Columbus made these celebrations extra special. Thank you!

The Raleigh non-profit, Passage Home, held its annual Holiday Workshop on Saturday December 16 where their clients were able to receive and wrap the many gifts we donated. Their children made crafts, played games, and visited with Santa Claus. And everyone had a big lunch feast too!

So much Gratitude and Cheer from our Giving TreeThank you all so much!

Our Brown Bag Ministry delivered several full cars worth of cleaning items and toiletries to Morehead Hills low-income senior center in Durham.

Community organizations whose families received gifts included: Birth Choice, Catholic Parish Outreach, Duke Children’s Hospital, Helen Wright Center, Emily K Center and Justice Theater Project, Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Passage Home, Ronald McDon-ald House in Durham, Tri-Area Ministry Food Pantry, Hispanic Family Outreach, and St. Francis Inn in Philadelphia. Parish ministries that benefited included: Gabriel Project, Sister Parish Guatemala, Feed the Need, Five Support Circle fami-lies and a Refugee family, Prayer Shawl, and St. Francis Brown Bag Ministry.

We also were able to help a handful of parish families here at St. Francis who are going through a transition in their lives. One of those families said to me, in receiving their gifts, overflowing with emotion, “I just can’t believe the generos-ity of this parish. This community of faith is unbelievable. I will pay it forward in the future, I promise. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”

A special thank you to our many minis-try coordinators and parishioner Janet Smolenski for coordinating this drive for the parish.

Happy New Year! As we kick off 2018, many set new goals in January to make the new year great. It is a time for beginnings when we evaluate our gifts and talents and determine how we can best share them with each other. It is also a time when many families begin the process for searching for the perfect school for their child to begin or further enhance their educa-tion. This year, if you are looking for a new school, consider giving your child a Catholic education at the St. Francis Preschool and The Franciscan School.

We invite all parishioners to join us for Winter Open House at both schools on Sunday, January 28 from 12:30 until 2:30 pm. Open House will begin in Clare Fellowship Hall. We invite you to meet our fabulous faculty and staff and learn about our curriculum, which is bolstered by our ability to share our faith and live Catholic values every day.

Our schools offer an environment where God’s presence exists every day. Laughter can be heard throughout the classrooms and visitors are greeted by many smiling faces. The children can feel the pres-ence of the Holy Spirit that makes our schools unique and special places. Children are taught in a safe, nur-turing environment by talented faculty and staff who encourage them to share their gifts and talents with others. Imagine your child surrounded by a beautiful campus that is home to state-of-the-art facilities and

in a school where they are taught the gift of serving others to help those in need. If this is what you imagine school should be for your child, we invite you to make it a reality by joining our school community and family in 2018!

Several weeks ago, I invited the women of the parish to gather together to kick off for our new evening Women’s Ministry. It’s pat-terned on the example of our Friday Morning Women’s Group who have been meeting consistently and quietly for decades. Since that article came out, I’ve heard many stories of how much this gathering of women has meant – from helping celebrate weddings, children, graduations and grandbabies and mourning the losses of marriages, friends and spouses. The group comes together to share how they see their faith at work in their lives, and from that, beautiful relationships have formed.

We had 15 women come together and I asked them what they hoped to get from the group. There was a founding member of St. Francis who wants to get re-connected to the parish; there were young mothers who want to take the opportunity to share their faith with other women and give their husbands a chance to take care of the kids for a few hours; and there were members of the Friday morning group who have gone back to work and miss being part of a group of women who walk through life together and share how they see God alive in lives.

You know, you hear the same scriptures every three years in the lectionary cycle, but how often do you get the chance to really discuss what you hear in the readings? It’s always so refreshing when you hear something new in a scripture you thought you understood. And by hearing how God is working in the lives of the members of the group, you can see how powerful our God is – that each person hears His words according to their need and their situation.

Women’s Ministry – by Day and by Night!

So in January 2018, both the Friday Morning Women’s Group and the Women’s Ministry will begin meeting to discuss Bishop Barron’s Untold Bless-ings. The Friday group will meet each Friday morning in Padua Room in the Community Center and the Women’s Ministry will meet twice each month, starting on January 9 at 7:00pm in Anthony Hall Conference Room.

If you’d like to participate, please order your Untold Blessings Study Guide at Wordonfire.org. We already have the DVD and we will be ready to hear Bishop Robert Barron paint a beautiful and mysterious image of what it takes to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

To register for the group, visit www.stfrancisraleigh.org/womens-ministry-3/ or call Kathleen Owen at 919-847-8205x241.

And guys, it’s not just all about the women! There’s a Men’s Ministry devoted to the same type of faith sharing. Currently they meet on the first Monday morning of the month at 7:00am in Padua Room in the Com-munity Center. If that time doesn’t work for you, contact me and we’ll see if we can start an evening group for you, too! [email protected]

See you soon!

January 8St Vincent de PaulA Proud Daddy of 3 and a devoted husband was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in February. In order to meet

bills, our neighbor’s wife took on an additional job. The tsunami of billsresulted in our neighbor having to choose between food and rent and his medica-tions and doctor visits. Not surprisinglyextreme money issues was causing depression. His comfort counselor sug-gested the St. Vincent de Paul Societyhere at St. Francis for assistance as his claim for social security disability has yet to be approved. The immediate needs were late payments for rent and utility bills. The SVdP was able to provide pay-ment of the rent and utility and referral to CPO for food. World Day of Peace January 1st

To the creator of nature and humankind, of truth and beauty, I pray: Hear my voice, for the voice of all the victims of all wars and violence among individuals and nations. Hear my voice, for it is the voice of children who suffer and will suffer when people put their faith in weapons and war. Hear my voice, when I beg you to instill into the hearts of all human beings the wisdom of peace, the strength of justice and the joy of fellowship. Hear my voice, for I speak for the multitudes in every country and in every period of history who do not want war and are ready to walk the road of peace. Hear my voice and grant insight and strength so that we may always respond to hatred with love, to injustice with total dedication to justice, to need with the sharing of self, to war with peace. O God, hear my voice and grant unto the world your everlasting peace. St. John Paul II Please consider joining us when you can at the Peace Pole (outside of Clare Hall, near the parking lots) each Sunday after the 9:30 Mass to pray for peace.

“May peace prevail on earth”
