Today, we are celebrating the Solemnity of the Lord’s Birth which is popularly known as Christmas.

But what is Christmas anyway? The word Christmas comes from the words Cristes maesse or “Christ’s Mass”. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, the Savior of all humankind especially for us Christian Catholics. Most historians peg the first Christmas celebration to Rome in 336 A.D. Christmas is both a holiday and a holyday. For us Catholics, it’s an important day in our liturgical calendar of the Church since the Lord became incarnate.

We give each other gifts during Christmas, what is the reason? We give Christmas gift because of a tradition that seems begin with the gifts that the wise men brought to Jesus. As stated in the gospel of St. Matthew: “On coming to the house they saw the child with his mother Mary and they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and incense and of myrrh.” Christmas is the greatest blessing for each one of us. It is because God has given us a gift that none of us can ever repay. It is not only the birth of Christ but it is more of the birthday of all those blessed to be baptized into the saving death and resurrection of our Incarnate Lord. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 504) has this to say about the Incarnation: “Jesus is conceived by the Holy Spirit in the Virgin Mary’s womb

because He is the New Adam, who inaugurates the new creation: ‘The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven.’ (1 Cor 15:45, 47) From His conception, Christ’s humanity is filled with the Holy Spirit, for God “gives Him the Spirit without measure.’ (Jn 3:34) From ‘His fullness’ as the Head of redeemed humanity ‘we have all received, grace upon grace,’ (Jn 1:16). Christmas is an occasion of joy. We come to an even greater appreciation of what Christ has done for us. We rejoice in the fact that his birth in that simple manger in Bethlehem opened for us the way to salvation.

Bo e Narodzenie O to Pan Bóg wchodzi w historię człowieka w sposób nieoczekiwany i najgłębszy z

możliwych. W swoim Synu, Jezusie Chrystusie, staje się człowiekiem. Bierze udział w ludzkim życiu jako jeden z nas. To „przyjście” Boga czyni historię życia każdego z nas świętą. To ważne, gdyż często mamy pokusę myślenia, że niewiele znaczymy. Nie należąc do „wielkich tego świata”, czujemy się trybikiem w potężnej maszynie rzeczywistości. Życie wydaje się szare, monotonne, może nawet pozbawione głębszego sensu. Wydaje się, że mamy niewielki wpływ na otaczającą nas rzeczywistość. Często ulegamy takiemu myśleniu i w głębi serca pojawia się jakiś smutek i gorycz. Nasze serca stają się „ciężkie”, przepełnione brzemieniem codziennych trosk. A Bóg? Może i On o mnie zapomniał. Może i Jego nie za bardzo obchodzę. Ewangelia, podobnie jak inne księgi Pisma Świętego, pokazuje nam coś zupełnie innego. Logika Boga jest tak inna od naszej. Jak pisze św. Paweł: On wybiera to, co słabe i mało znaczące w oczach świata: „Przeto przypatrzcie się, bracia i siostry powołaniu waszemu! Niewielu tam mędrców według oceny ludzkiej, niewielu możnych, niewielu szlachetnie urodzonych. Bóg wybrał właśnie to, co głupie w oczach świata, aby zawstydzić mędrców, wybrał to, co niemocne, aby mocnych poniżyć; i to, co nie jest szlachetnie urodzone według świata i wzgardzone, i to, co nie jest, wyróżnił Bóg, by to, co jest, unicestwić, tak by się żadne stworzenie nie chełpiło wobec Boga” (1 Kor 1, 26-29). Nasza wiara i zaufanie mogą być drogą, przez którą Chrystus stanie się widoczny dla świata, w którym żyjemy. Nie słowa, lecz czyny, decyzje i kierunek, w którym człowiek podąża, świadczą o nim, są dowodem jego wiary lub jej braku. Bóg w swoim miłosierdziu pozwala nam zobaczyć tylko fragment drogi, do „następnego zakrętu”, do drzwi, które na razie wydają się zamknięte. Nie musimy wiedzieć, co będzie „dalej”, jak potoczy się historia. Przecież skoro Bóg wzywa do podjęcia drogi, to nas na niej nie opuści. Tego właśnie doświadczyli Maryja i Józef. Dzięki takiej wierze i zaufaniu narodził się Jezus w Betlejem. Dzięki takiej wierze może narodzić się również w każdym z nas.

E s la Navidad! Jesucristo, bajó del cielo para salvarnos; pero lo que le empujó a bajar del

cielo por nuestra salvación fue el amor, nada más que el amor. Navidad es la prueba

suprema de la «generosidad» de Dios como la llama la Biblia (Tito 3, 4), o sea, literalmente,

de su amor por los hombres. Esta respuesta al por qué de la encarnación estaba escrita con

claridad en la Escritura, por el mismo evangelista que hizo el prólogo: “Tanto amó Dios al

mundo que entregó a su Hijo único, para que todo el que crea en él no perezca, sino que

tenga vida eterna” (Juan 3, 16).

¿Cuál debe ser entonces nuestra respuesta al mensaje de Navidad? Se pueden hacer

muchas cosas para celebrar la Navidad, pero lo más verdadero y profundo se nos sugiere de

estas palabras. Un pensamiento sincero de gratitud, de conmoción y de amor por quien vino

a habitar entre nosotros, es el don más exquisito que podemos llevar al Niño Jesús, el adorno

más bello en torno a su pesebre.

Para ser sincero, además, el amor necesita traducirse en gestos concretos. El más

sencillo y universal –cuando es limpio e inocente- es el beso. Demos por lo tanto un beso a

Jesús, como se desea hacer con todos los niños recién nacidos. Pero no nos contentemos con

darlo sólo a la imagen de yeso o de porcelana; démoslo a un Jesús Niño de carne y hueso.

Démoslo a un pobre, a alguien que sufre, ¡y se lo habremos dado a Él! Dar un beso, en este

sentido, significa dar una ayuda concreta, pero también una buena palabra, aliento, una

visita, una sonrisa.

Celebrar verdaderamente la navidad es festejar el encuentro de Dios con el ser

humano. Para cada uno de nosotros en esta navidad lo más importante es abrir las puertas

de nuestros corazones y de nuestros hogares para que Jesús nazca de nuevo en ellos. Navidad

es recordar el nacimiento de Jesús, el Hijo de Dios, anunciado por los profetas, esperado por

los justos; y vivirla en la vida cotidiana de día a día.

Navidad es celebrar el amor y la misericordia de Dios, que en Jesús su Hijo hecho

carne ha venido para compartir nuestros sufrimientos y nuestras esperanzas.

En esta navidad que Dios se ha hecho hombre, nos ha de hacer entender de corazón,

comprender esas razones que sólo el corazón alcanza que ser hombre es algo divino.

Rincón Parroquial Programación de la parroquia- Misas en español: Los domingos a las 12:15 pm. Todos los jueves a las 7 de la noche. Cada primer jueves del mes se celebra la misa para los enfermos donde pedimos la sanación física y espiritual para los participantes.

Hora Santa: Un momento de adoración al Santísimo Sacramento todos los viernes a las 7:00 p.m. en la Iglesia. Cada segundo viernes del mes tenemos la Hora Santa de Sanación pidiendo a Jesús sacramentado sanación espiritual y corporal. Únicamente los primeros viernes del mes la adoración tiene lugar en la Capilla de la Adoración al lado de la Casa parroquial.

Confesiones: Tienen lugar siempre media hora antes de la misa los jueves en el horario de 6:30- 7:00 pm. Además el viernes durante la adoración del Santísimo Sacramento de 7:00-8:00 p.m.

Despacho Parroquial: Suministra toda la información relacionada con los sacramentos, celebraciones y todas las actividades que se realizan en la Parroquia San José Obrero. Bautizos de los niños: Inscripciones para Bautizos son de lunes a viernes en el horario de la oficina de

9:00 am.- 4:45 pm Si los padrinos son pareja, deben estar casados por la Iglesia. Se requiere

certificado de matrimonio. Las pláticas pre-bautismales para los padres y padrinos tienen lugar en el salón

parroquial en la Parroquia St. Joseph the Worker el primer miércoles de cada mes, a las 6:30 pm. También puede asistir a las mismas en otra parroquia, pero en tal caso debe presentar el certificado que lo compruebe.

Los bautizos en la Parroquia se celebran el primer y tercer sábado de cada mes a las 9:15 am

Presentación de los niños: Se pide a los padres anunciar con anticipación en el despacho parroquial (oficina) o antes de la misa el deseo de presentar sus hijos/as en la misa de domingo. Todo eso para tomar los datos del niño o la niña ponerlo en la oración y mencionarlo en la misa.

Christmas Eve Family Mass & Gospel Drama

T he Family Mass will be celebrated in English on Christmas Eve at 5:00

p.m. All are invited to join in this liturgy as part of your Christmas celebration. Our Religious Ed students will be presenting our traditional Christmas Pageant retelling the scriptural story of Christ's birth after the proclaiming of the Gospel. The whole community can join in with familiar Christmas carols.

Keep Our Dear Lord company in the Adoration Chapel

P lease consider spending a half hour or more a week with Jesus in the

Blessed Sacrament. The Chapel is open weekdays from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm and 8:00 am to 10:00 pm on the weekend.

THE GIFT OF GOD’S WORD On this day of gifts and gift‐giving, it seems appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on the great gift of God’s Word. Because it is creative, God’s Word always points to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God’s Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the human. Because it is graceful, God’s Word establishes a relationship of deep intimacy between us and God.

At the heart of God’s Word lies a tantalizing tension between the mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us to respond, to act upon that meaning.

In the News at SJW Students in our English RE, Span-ish RE and Polish school who will be receiving their Confirmation this spring are busy providing services to the parish, the community and those in needs this Christmas sea-son. Some students set up the PADS facility at St. Alphonsus Li-gouri in Prospect Heights so that guests would have a place to spend the night out of the cold and hot meals to eat. Students also make Christmas cards to provide some cheers to guests at the Catholic Charities soup kitchen. Other stu-dents help in various events at St. Joe’s.

Guadalupanas Wedding On December 10th, we celebrated the first Guadalupana weddings here at St Joseph The Worker parish. It was a celebration of many blessings for the couples who made the deci-sion to say yes to the call of God, as well as for all those who were present for this histori-cal event in our community. We include these couples in our prayers and pray for all the marriages in this community and the entire world.

Sacrament of Baptism: Parents and Godparents play an important role in the faith life of your child. Please be aware that godparents must also be practicing Catholics. You must attend the preparation class and register your child for the sacrament. English: First, third & fifth Sundays: 2:30 p.m. Spanish: First & third Saturdays: 9:15 a.m. Polish: First Saturday: 10:30 a.m.; First & third Sundays: 4:00 p.m.

Sacrament of Matrimony: Congratulations on your Engagement! A minimum of four months advanced preparation is required. Please call the parish office for an appointment.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults): Anyone interested in becoming a Catholic or learning more about the Catholic faith is invited to call the office to contact Deacon Steve Stecker.

Religious Education: A child must be in the religious education program for TWO YEARS prior to receiving the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist or Confirmation. Communion for the Sick/Homebound: Ministries of Care visit and bring the Eucharist to the sick, homebound or hospitalized. Please call the parish office to arrange a visit.
