Tradition of Oplatki
in Poland during Early Christian
with a simple white wafer, baked from flour and water. The wafers are wonderfully designed to display
Christmas images, such as the Nativity.
The significance of the Oplatki Christmas wafer is in shadowing the Eucharistic meal Catholics participate in at Mass. Just as we share in the Eucharist as one family in Christ and receive Christ’s love through the Eucharist, the Oplatki allows for one’s immediate family to come together and share the love they have for one another. This symbolism is deepened by the fact that the name
, means "House of Bread," which makes the Oplatki tradition an especially beautiful way to celebrate
season.

A great big “thank you” to all of our parishioners who donated so generously to our parish-wide Thanksgiving and Christmas Collection. Your charity enabled us to provide bountiful dinners for all of our 14 families. Our clients
and personal care items (which cannot be purchased with food stamps).
Your monetary donations were a welcome addition to our treasury—they will enable us to help our clients in the cold winter months to come!
We wish you and your family a blessed Christmastime and may you have a healthy, happy New Year!
Blood Drive Heartfelt Thanks! The 2019 Blood Drive at St Gabriel’s was very successful thanks to our many wonderful donors! We had 60 donations! That means we actually helped or saved 180 lives!!! Despite a few cancellations and deferrals, we did a fantastic job…together! It was truly a team effort.

Mary’s Corner...The Gift of Compassion At this time of year, the warmth of fond memories and hope balance the chill in the air. It’s also a time to look back on the past year of natural disas-ters and mass shootings. One can start to feel powerless in the face of these calamities. This is a dangerous place to be because sooner or later the powerlessness translates to numbness. If there is a salve to this infection of the soul, it will be found in compassion, a willingness to get out of our comfort zone.
Mobilize - If you have the funds, pull out your phone and donate to causes you care about or help a next door neighbor. You can make an impact.
Be there - If you can, volunteer at a food bank or home-less shelter. Seeing someone’s face light up simply because you are helping deliver a basic need (such as food or clothing) will brighten your soul more than any Christmas tree lighting. Giving of yourself is Christ-like.
Remember the power of prayer - We believe prayer brings us closer not only to God, but also to each other. Sometimes it seems as if praying doesn’t have a direct effect on people who are suffering miles away. However, prayers for those we don’t know show how far reaching the term ”Body of Christ” really is. The power of prayer cannot be over estimated. As we celebrate Jesus’ birth, may we remember those in need of our compassion and support.

Choosing Godparents for your Baby
From time to time, questions and controversies arise as to who may serve as a Godparent for the Sacrament of Baptism. Therefore, this is a review of
Below is the criteria to be considered before the parents of a child ask someone to be a Godparent for their son or daughter:
Since Baptism is the initial, foundational Sacrament in the life of a Catholic, great care must be taken in deciding who will serve as a Godparent. The guidelines above are meant to assist parents in making a reasonable and secure decision as to who will fulfill this critical role for their child. Since the guidelines are provided by the universal Church and individ-ual priests are not vested with the authority to dispense from them, these guidelines will be strictly followed at all Catholic Churches.
The decision of choosing a Godparent should be based upon who would provide the best example of Catholic living for the child and not merely for reasons of maintaining family harmony. A Godparent is not chosen to honor the Godparent, but for the well-being and faith development of the child.
must be a practicing Catholic, at least 16 years of age and have received the Sacraments of Initiation (i.e. Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation). Further-more, if this person is married, the marriage must be a valid, sacramental marriage (i.e. one recognized and blessed by the Catholic Church). The potential Godparent must be registered in a Catholic parish and able to obtain from his or her parish priest a letter of eligibility to be a Godparent. Only one Godparent is required by Church law. This Godparent may be a man or a woman. However, if two Godparents are selected (the more common practice), then there must be one man and one woman chosen. In other words, a child cannot have two men or two women as Godparents. In extraordinary situations, when two Catholic Godpar-ents cannot be found, a baptized person who belongs to another Christian denomination (i.e. Methodist, Lutheran, or Presbyterian) may serve as a Christian Witness. However, former Catholics who have left the Catholic Church for another Christian denomination are not permitted to serve, either as a Catholic Godparent or a Christian Witnesses.

SOMETHING EXTRA Guests’ Night Out
Friday, January 17 6:30 p.m. St. Valentine Church Frawley Hall
What’s better than a hot cup of soup or a hearty bowl of chili on a cold Winter night? Do you enjoy being amazed by magic? Or how about just enjoying a glass of wine with some friends after a long week! You can have all of these things and maybe even make some new friends
at the Guests’ Night Out hosted by the St. Valentine Women’s Guild.
This event is open to all adults in our grouping, Women, Men, Couples and Singles. There will even be a Strolling Magician performing table magic and hypnosis during and after dinner!
The Guild members will provide the soups and chilies but we would appreciate any Guests bringing an appetizer or a dessert – of course if you have a favorite soup or chili; that would be a most welcome addition as well. Even if cook-ing is not your thing, please consider coming just to enjoy the fun and fellowship after the hectic Holiday Season. The evening is BYOB and there’s no charge, we just ask that you make a reservation so we know how many guests to expect.
Please contact MaryAnn Surma at 412-831-7078 or Audrey Walbert at 724-518-6894 for reserva-tions or questions. We hope to see you there!
