ANNUAL CAROL SING
The dark skies and slightly misty weather didn’t dampen the spirits for caroling at Mystic Seaport on Sunday, December 18th making this year’s Community Carol Sing a success once again! The Mystic Seaport Carolers some 40 voices strong; and the Brass Quartet, enjoyed the applause, bell ringing and appreciation from the lively crowd of visitors who came to sing along. With voices strong, and under the splendid direction of Maestro Jamie Spillane, the carolers gave meaning to the holiday season. Steve White, the museum President, welcomed the crowd, while Jamie inspired them with his overwhelming enthusiasm. In the spirit of giving and through the generosity of those who attended, a donation that totaled seventy boxes (approximately 1,400 lbs. of canned goods and boxes of non-perishable food items) were donated to the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. Coastal Gourmet provided warm cider and hot chocolate for purchase to help keep revelers warm in The Donald C. McGraw Quadrangle and the Thompson Exhibition Building made for the perfect venue!
Staff was outstanding in their efforts, especially Security, the gate personnel, and the Interpretation Department. Thirty nine volunteers performed their duties with efficiency, enthusiasm and good cheer, providing comfort and direction to visitors, collecting food donations and distributing song books. Many thanks to all!!

2017 MALLORY INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM Proposals are now being accepted for the 2017 Mallory International Exchange Fellowship Program. This
year the Fellowship will be used to support a colleague(s) from a foreign museum, library, historic site,
or other educational institution in any discipline related to Mystic Seaport’s mission to travel to Mystic
Seaport for research and study purposes. The Mallory Fellowship Endowment was established in 1993
by Wade and Angela Thompson to honor Clifford and Pauline Mallory for their many years of service to
Mystic Seaport. The stated purpose of the fund is “...to create an international exchange program
between the Seaport and other institutions...” Proposals should be submitted by a Mystic Seaport staff
member sponsoring a colleague from a foreign museum, library, historic site, or other educational
institution to travel to Mystic Seaport.
The submitter of the successful proposal(s) will have the general responsibilities of any project Manager-- to ensure that funds are spent according to the approved budget, and to prepare a 1-2 page narrative project report at the conclusion of the project, which the Advancement Office may forward to the donor. Funds are available to fund one or more projects (total funding for the Fellowship Program not to exceed $8,500).
Each proposal must contain:
- Project Title
- Title Page including name and signature of staff member, department director, and vice president sponsoring the proposal. Proposals from DDs or VPs must be signed by Steve White or Susan Funk.
- Project Abstract (1-2 page maximum) including goals and intended outcomes of the project, description of the resources to be researched, and names of colleagues for consultation.
- A letter of support from the foreign institution.
- Project Budget indicating proposed budget period and detailed breakdown of expenses not to exceed $8,500 per project.
- Proposed Exchange timeframe and schedule.
- Resume of the proposed visiting Museum professional participant.
Due date is January 31, 2017. Proposals should be submitted to Jeanne Gade, Director of HR, for transmittal to Mallory Fellowship Selection Committee for review. Late submissions will not be accepted. Proposal Evaluation and Selection:
Proposals will be evaluated by the Selection Committee on a number of different criteria, particularly the relationship of proposed activities to the advancement of Mystic Seaport’s mission and strategic initiatives. The Selection Committee consists of 5 staff members, including past Mallory Fellowship recipients. The top 3 proposals may be shared with the donors for their involvement and input prior to making the final selection. Selections will be announced by early February 2017.
PUBLIC PROGRAM PROJECT MANAGER
I am pleased to announce that Arlene Marcionette has accepted the position of Public Programs Program Manager, effective January 9. Arlene joined Mystic Seaport in 2013. Arlene brings a depth of experience in creation and implementation of programs and events. Her broad experience, from NY Fashion Week to the Morgan’s 38th Voyage and Mystic Seaport galas, provides a strong foundation for this new position. Please join me in congratulating Arlene on this new position.

MYSTIC SEAPORT FOR EDUCATORS
RECENT UPDATES
We have recently updated the Mystic Seaport for Educators website to include some new items:
· SeaChange Resource Set: There are short artifact articles for each of the artifacts in SeaChange. Remember that the lighter blue words in the text expand to give you more information if you click on them and, lots more related info can be found in each artifact’s sidebar including recommended readings, classroom ideas, special worksheets, conservation reports, etc.
· “Science of the 38th Voyage of the Charles W. Morgan:” Six 45-minute lesson plans for grades 5-8, focused on the science projects done during the 38th Voyage. Lessons were written by Alexandra McInturf (Williams-Mystic Alum) and Dr. Lisa Gilbert of Williams-Mystic. Lessons include: “Storm-Tracking Science,” “Where are the Whales?,” “The Whale Pump,” “Water Transparency and Whales,” “Eavesdropping on Echolocation,” and “North Atlantic Aliens.”
· “Animals in Sea History:” This is a collection of over thirty 2-page articles and illustrations about maritime animals, by Dr. Rich King. The articles were originally created for Sea History magazine. Browse through to find great information on everything from the Grampus to the Great Auk! Thank you to Rich and to Sea History Magazine for sharing this information with us.
· Various new Artifact Articles and Living Documents: Some include “Messing About in Boats,” Luis Norris Wilcox Letter, Red Coral Necklace, Concertina, Captain William Evans Letter, and many more…
If you are not familiar with the website, it is a collection of short articles and other educational features, created by teachers and professors, museum teachers, volunteers, and occasionally interns. We are a very small team, proofreading, fact-checking, and entering the data. We do our best, but if you ever run into any mistakes or problems on the website, please feel free to contact us and let us know. In addition, if you know something more about an artifact or document on the site, or have an idea, we’d love to know! We always appreciate input from staff and teachers and try to incorporate it as quickly as possible. -Krystal Rose & Laura Nadelberg
