CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish December 21, 2014 Fourth Sunday of Advent “To renew all things in Christ” Dear Friends, Many of us have dreams and aspirations. They may germinate in our childhood and grow over the years. Usually, they revolve around the promise of a something better yet to come. For some people, the dream might be to have a beautiful home or a big family. Others might have a dream to travel to a foreign country or to enter the career of their choice. Each aspiration can be as unique as each individual. Some dreams come to fruition, some do not. Others unfold in a way other than expected. Whatever the case may be, our dreams are typically oriented to a future full of promise. As a child, I was fascinated by the history of Texas. What child wouldn’t be? I became enthralled with stories of James Fannin, Sam Houston, William Barret Travis, Davy Crockett, James Bowie, and others who fought for Texas independence. These figures seemed larger than life. Like many, I was particularly fond of the story of the Alamo. It was a classic story of courage, fortitude, and the ideological stance for freedom. Because of that, I dreamed that perhaps one day I would have a chance to wander through the actual Alamo and imagine what it was like for our Texas heroes to be barricaded within the walls of the mission. As a kid, that dream seemed far out of reach, but as providence would have it, I eventually did get to go see the Alamo and many other Texas historical sites during some of our family vacations as a young lad. When I look back at the Christmases of my childhood, almost all of my dreams for gifts were fulfilled. For the most part, I received what I had hoped for and I have to say that the joy of the season was truly present. Somehow, the overriding focus was always on the Christ-child. Church was central to what we did as a family and it always gave meaning to everything that happened at Christmas. All seemed good in the world and this time of year was an authentic joy. How well do you trust in the fulfillment of your dreams? King David, in the first reading this weekend, had a dream of building a suitable and permanent dwelling place – a temple – for the Ark of the Covenant. Through Nathan, however, God revealed that he would instead establish a house for David. This house would not be an edifice of stone, but rather a promise of a lasting dynasty that would endure. From this house would come a descendent who would be a Savior and King that would bring healing, pardon, and lasting peace for his people. This promise would require that David trust in something that he would not see fulfilled in his lifetime. Like David, Mary would be called upon to have faith in the promise that her Son would be that Savior that was first promised to David. Can you imagine what it must have been like for Mary to put her trust in the Lord, not knowing what was in store for her? She had to put faith in the Lord that he would lead her through the apparent “scandal” of her being with child. She had to trust that her child would bring about the ultimate fulfillment of all God’s promises, even though he was to suffer a cruel death at the hands of the Jewish elders and the 50 Years of Faith

Dear Friends,

Many of us have dreams and aspirations. They may germinate in our childhood and grow over the years. Usually, they revolve around the promise of a something better yet to come. For some people, the dream might be to have a beautiful home or a big family. Others might have a dream to travel to a foreign country or to enter the career of their choice. Roman powers. All she had to go on was a promise all those years. She did believe, and she gave her assent. Her “yes” brought to fulfillment God’s promise and indeed, a Savior was born. He is “Son of the Most High”.

Mary had a faith that was beyond human capability. Hers was a supernatural trust. That is the same kind of faith that we are called upon to have. When we are dealing with the many extraordinary struggles and difficulties of our lives, we are called to believe in the promise of salvation that is extended to us. We must hold on to hope that God will bring to fruition our dreams and longings. We must believe beyond hope that God is holding us in the palm of his hands. The promises of the Lord are good and his love is everlasting. As we draw our Advent journey to a close and celebrate the birth of Christ, let’s look forward to the abundant blessings that God has in store for us. On behalf of Fr. John, the deacons, the staff, and myself, I want to wish all of you a very Blessed Christmas! May you enjoy the blessing of family and friends, and the warmth of God’s love. Finally, may the peace of the Christ-child reign in your hearts!

By the time you read this, the students and staff of St. Pius X Catholic School will be on Christmas Break!

Students were released at 12:00 noon last Friday and will return to classes on Tuesday, January 6, 2015. The teachers and staff will return on January 5th for staff development. Half the school year is over – where did the time go?

This past week was pretty busy and filled with lots of activities. Starting on Monday, we had a 2nd Grade field trip to sing carols to some of our parish shut-ins and a visit to the Christmas Tree Forest, a Student Council meeting that afternoon, a school wide Christmas program on Tuesday, a repeat performance on Wednesday, a Manner of the Month Lunch catered by Jason’s Deli on Thursday, caroling by our 5th and 6th grade students at various skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers and classroom parties on Friday. Whew!

A big THANK YOU to Mrs. Chris Bryan (music), Mrs. Kathi Urbis (6th grade actors and actresses), Mr. Mike Conley (piano accompanist), all the staff and students for all their hard work in preparation for the Christmas program. It was a beautiful presentation.

When we return in January, we will start our 2nd semester of school. Planning is already under way for Catholic Schools Week that will take place January 26th through January 30th. A lot of fun things are in the works.

From all of the students and staff of St. Pius X Catholic School, we wish you a very Blessed Christmas and a prosperous, joyful and peaceful New Year!

Give as God gave at Christmas

Why do Catholics say Mary was born without Original Sin?

Discovering hope and joy in the Catholic faith. December 2014

The Catechism teaches that God gave Mary all the gifts necessary for her to become mother of our Savior. In fact, when the angel Gabriel addressed Mary as "full of grace" in Luke 1:28, he means that Mary had the special divine

help necessary for the task ahead. While we are cleansed of original sin at Baptism, Pope Pius IX infallibly affirmed that Mary's role

in Jesus’ work was so crucial that it kept her

from original sin at the outset.

St. Nicholas Legends abound about this saint but we know that he

was orphaned at a young age when his wealthy parents died. Generous to a fault, he reportedly threw money down a chimney to enable a poor man’s daughters to marry. This is the image that makes him the model for Santa Claus. As bishop of Lycia (now Turkey), he fought against heresies plaguing the Church in the fourth century. He was devoted to charity and the protection of the weak.

Pray for peace In the midst of your celebration of Christ’s birth, please pray that all nations will come to respect life from conception to natural death.

Believing vs. understanding When Mary heard she would give birth to the Son of God, she didn’t understand but trusted anyway, “Be it done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). She knew that we don’t have to understand to believe that God can do the

impossible.

We give because God gave. God gave us his son, so every December we imitate him by giving gifts to our loved ones. What about gifts for God? God gave the gift of himself. God was the first Christmas gift, lying in a manger. In his image, we are called to give the gift of ourselves to him. Go to Mass every Sunday and in between, too. Kneel in adoration before the tabernacle or in a Perpetual Adora-tion chapel. Go to Confession to stay connected. Give the gift of love. God loves freely whether or not we love in return. He asks us to share love with others. Give others your undivided attention. Put down the cellphone in meetings,

in conversations, and definitely at Mass. Listen when someone has a problem. Put people before things. Give the gift of prayer. Are your

prayers like a letter to Santa – lists of wants and needs? God already knows all that. Instead, pray for

friends or loved ones who aren’t active in

their faith. Offer Rosaries for

those who are sick. Ask God for guidance

and thank him for his goodness.

Give the gift of help. Don’t forget your parish where God’s work is done. Help clean the church, teach a class, shovel snow, support a ministry. Without you, God’s work won’t get done.
