Dear Church Family - For our first worship series in 2021, we are exploring Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Peter Scazzero. I encourage each and every one of you to take in the Sunday message along with the daily devotionals related to this topic. I personally have been challenged and blessed by reviewing the material in preparation for the series. WARNING: This will not be easy. ENCOURAGEMENT: For those who engage in the process, it will be worth the effort! At the core of the material is the call to cultivate a vibrant relationship with Jesus. There are practices (habits) we can incorporate into our routine that will nurture our faith in Christ—Bible reading, prayer, silence, Sab- bath rest, etc. However, doing more for God will not in itself bring life transformation and a renewed mind. There must be submission to the Lord and to the work He wants to do in our lives. Christians often limit their spiritual growth because they fail to mature emotionally and work through the pain, struggle, and guilt they have been holding on to. The Lords desire is that each and everyone of you is growing to maturity in Christ—having the character of Christ and equipped with knowledge and spiritual gifts. Why? Because Gods plan is for every Christian to work in harmony with other believers in the Body of Christ (the church) to advance Gods kingdom. There is a hurting world that is longing to hear the truth you have come to believe. Through Gods grace, you have not only been saved but given the opportunity and responsibility to share His grace with others. You, the church body, have this responsibility. I will serve you as long as I am here, but I will be transitioning to a new role in the Spring. It is not appropriate for me to cast a vision for you at this point. Your new pastor has not been chosen, does not know you, and does not know the com- munity. I have no doubt you will embrace the new pastoral family well, but it will take time for them to get acquainted. As the body, you must lis- ten to Christ, discern His will, and move forward with the mission of reaching your friends and neighbors with the love of Christ. All the mem- bers of the church are counting on you to do your part—no more, no less. Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, may you know what is the hope to which He has called you, what are the riches of His glorious in- heritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe according to the working of His great might.Ephesians 1:18-19 Sincerely yours - Pastor Rich December 2020 TRINITY UMC STAFF Pastor Rich Rakay [email protected] Cell: (419)236-4692 Worship/Youth Leader Wayne Wells [email protected] Cell: 937-684-6684 Church Secretary Carol Higbea [email protected] Office: (419)692-0651 Fax: (419)692-0009 Tender Times Director Melissa Creps [email protected] Office: (567)765-0502 Custodian Kory Angel [email protected] Worship Musician Kathy Stewart [email protected] Choir Director Erin Stokes [email protected] Office and Mailing Address Trinity United Methodist Church 211 E. Youth Update

2020 is behind us, and I am looking forward to what God will do in 2021. As the youth group finished out in 2020, we completed a series that took us more in-depth in the Word of God. The series we studied was titled Explained. One of the major themes in this series was that “The point of the Bible is to know God better.”

We studied the different parts of the Bible and gained a deeper understanding of how the Bible is laid out and how to read it for ourselves. We had many good discussions, and it was fantastic to watch our students grow deeper in their understanding of the Bible and their relationship with Jesus Christ.

In December we had some fun. We were able to have our Christ-mas party at the Family Life Center. After overcoming a little fias-co with Pizza flying all over my car, our party was a lot of fun. We shared funny Christmas stories and had an entertaining white ele-phant gift exchange. We set up a TV so we could see our out of state student better on Zoom. We were also able to purchase very affordable laser tag equipment, and the students are having a blast (pun intended) using them. I am also getting some much-needed exercise trying to keep up with them! Thank You!

I would like to say thank you to all of our parents, who served the youth group by being our Youth group parent each week. We could not do what we do without you!

I would like to say thank you to everyone who gave me a note of encouragement, a Christmas card, or a gift this year. I appreciate the kind words and the special gifts that were given to my family and me.

If you supported the Youth group this year by donating to the youth designated fund or the camper-ship fund, I want to thank you. Your financial support helps us to provide affordable, Christ-centered opportunities for our students.

I also want to say thank you to the Delphos Jefferson Band Boosters for the gift they gave me and for the generous donation they gave to the youth group.

Thank You, church, for all of your financial support, encouragement and for covering our students, volunteers, and staff in prayer. It is wonderful to serve such a supportive congregation.

-Wayne Wells

Children’s Discipleship

Two years in a row, SCUBA has ended without our volunteers being able to say good-bye to the kids or give them materials for the summer. 2019 ended with a School cancellation on the last day of the program and 2020 ended in March because of the onset of Covid. Attendance for SCUBA in 2019 was around 15 students with a high of around 24. 2020 saw a significant increase in average attendance to around 45 students with a high of 53 students. Volunteers did a great job working through many difficult situations. The efforts all volunteers gave in serving the kids was truly appreciated. Volunteers were responsible for making sure the children were safe while walking from School to Church. Children met in the sanctuary for prayers and mu-sic before being served a snack. The children were broken into groups and went upstairs for the lesson and crafts. There was a closing prayer prior to dismissal. Several projects came out of the cancellation of SCUBA. In an effort to stay in contact with the youth that attended SCUBA, an Advent Calendar was mailed to each of the attendees from last year. Once we decided to send the calendars, discussions led us to the fact that all kids in school were hurting because of the unusual circumstances causing the shoe box gift program to come to life. Once the shoe box project started, it took on a life of its own. Initially we didn’t know how many kids attended Franklin School, it turns out there are 338. With 2-1/2 weeks until Christmas break we were wondering what we were going to put into the boxes. With 10 days until break we began to understand the boxes weren’t big enough. That’s when the project took yet another turn. We were asked if the extra items could be given to the teachers for their rewards program. (23) laundry bas-kets full of items from snacks to pencils were made up for all the teachers at Franklin. The last twist to the story was when Pastor announced that ½ the Christmas donations would go to the Franklin Schools Principals Fund. Your generosity provided $2,700 for the principal to use in assisting fami-lies in need. This project was one of the most unique that I’ve ever been part of at Trinity. Everyone I asked to help with the program did so and in a rare occurrence, I had people approach me and ask how they could help. I would like to thank those who assembled the boxes, setup tables, organized the distri-bution of the items by class (with military precision I might add), ordered special items for the boxes, purchased the wrapping paper and cut it to size for the boxes, organized the students that packed the gifts and wrapped them and designed and printed the labels for the boxes. We had a team of people that loaded the boxes into vehicles and delivered them to the school so that the kids could see the presents around the Christmas tree when they came into school Friday morning. I’ve described the role the volunteers had in this project, but the program wouldn’t have been possi-ble without the generous donations that made it possible. This was a very successful program that truly touched the kids, teachers and the administrators at Franklin. Thank-you!!! Notes:

1) The Nursery and Jr. Church are open! We meet each Sunday at the FLC during the 10AM Service.

2) A meeting will be scheduled in January to review and set tentative dates for other Children’s ministry programs scheduled throughout the year.

Habitat for Humanity

Last year at this time we were telling you that there was approval for the next habitat home to be built in Delphos. We are “starting to put things into gear” and “We are beginning the process for selecting a family” was the news from Habitat Lima. The family for the 2021 Habitat Delphos build has been selected but the house has not been completed. They have begun the construction and you can see the foundation if you drive down Washington Street. This is a start and Executive Director Bruce Hilty of Habitat Lima says the plan is to “keep moving forward” and “get started on further construction early this spring”.

For those of you who know Mark Suderman the volunteer coordinator, he has moved on and Caleb Farmer will be taking over those duties. To reach Caleb you may e-mail him at [email protected] or call the office at 419-222-4937. We will also try to keep you updated on the project so you may help with this Hands on Mission.

As we all know, 2020 was a wild year. One of the hidden consequences of 2020 that may not be on our minds was the rise of construction material costs. The mission committee hopes that you will consider supporting our January Mission feature by helping with your hands and/or donating funds to help support building the habitat house. All donations will be kept local and put into the Delphos build.

-Missions Committee

January Mission Feature

—The Mission Committee would like to send congratulations to Perry Wiltsie the youth children’s discipleship committee, Pastor Rich and every set of hands that helped with the boxes for all the kids at Jefferson elementary. This was definitely “We have hearts for mis-sions” embodied in the most precious way our church could reach the community by providing for the children.

Again thanks to each and EVERY helper. From those who prayed for the project and the people it would touch, to the donors (items and monetary), the organizers, the packers, wrappers, and the delivery

people.

-Thanks again for this hands on mission, Mission Committee —Special thanks to all who have helped with the recent funeral dinners. Because of the Covid-19 virus in the community, these dinners have looked different. We have had a set menu that has been cooked exclusively at the Life Center by a very limited number of helpers. Please remember even if you are not being called to help, your prayers for the families are always appreciated. —On behalf of the Delphos Community Christmas Project, thanks to all of you who donated to our church's Angel Tree this year. With your help, we were able to provide a brighter Christmas to 317 of our local children. God bless you for sharing! God bless you for your generosity and Merry Christmas! -Sue Wilkin for the Delphos Community Christmas Project

2021 Streaming Sponsorships Available

With the Covid-19 pandemic, our church quickly adapted by providing access to our services on Facebook. As we begin 2021, we are in the process of upgrading our camera equip-ment and the way we provide our services online. We have been able to provide access to our current church members and reach new people in our community and beyond. In 2021 we will continue to provide access to our services on Facebook, and we will

expand our online reach to our website, YouTube, Roku, and other online platforms. This ministry has blessed many people in 2020 and will continue to be a great tool to reach people for Jesus Christ in 2021 and beyond. Your sponsorship gift of $35 per week covers our

Norma “Toddy” Rozelle-Diers, 105, passed away on December 16, 2020. Norma was born on October 10, 1915, in Toronto, Canada to Robert and Gertrude (Sampson) Todd. On June 11, 1935, she was united in marriage to Robert B. Rozelle who passed away in 1983. She was then united in marriage on September 11, 1993, to Casey Diers who passed in 2005.

Norma is survived by a son and a daughter, Todd (Janet) Rozelle and Jacqueline (Edward) Fritz, all of Delphos; five grandchildren, James “JP” (Patty) Fritz, Eric (Gina) Fritz, Andrea (Doug) Duerr, Melissa (Christopher) Ellison, and Jacquie (Matt) Kill; two step-children Susan Dallas and Robert Diers; 11 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Stanley Rozelle; and two brothers Dr. Don (Nellie) Todd and Paul (Thelma) Todd.

Norma was a 75+ year member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Or-der of the Eastern Star Chapter #26, where she was a past matron and aide to the Grand Organist. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church Women’s group, the choir, and the Altar Guild. She was a Welcome Wagon hostess for seven years. Norma was on the PTA for Delphos City Schools for 25 years and volunteered at Franklin Elementary for 19 years. She was especially known for running the PTO Variety show at Jefferson School. Anyone from the 50’s would remem-ber her from this. She was producer and director making sure every child had the costumes they needed. She loved all the kids and loved giving them stage presence. She was also a Girl Scout leader for 12 years, and worked at the Allen County Election Board as a poll worker for over 30 years. She loved to swim, was always reading, and belonged to many bridge clubs. So while we say Norma was a “homemaker,” she gave of her time freely volunteering to help others. Having lived over 100 years, Norma was known for her entertaining stories and her laugh. She was always happy. Her vitality and love of others kept her young at heart. She will be greatly missed by many. The family would like to thank all her wonderful caregivers at Vancrest.

Note from your Mission Committee Until further notice, please hold off bringing anymore plastic bags. The committee has made mats for the homeless, but at this time the project has been put on hold. We are grateful for those who have already donated plastic bags in the past.

As we ease back into a normal routine for our worship schedule, we need everyone to take stock of ways they are willing to serve. Many have increased contributions to sustain church operations and helped behind the scenes with set-up at the Family Life Center or assisting with online communication. Now we need to focus on the ways we serve one another when we gather together. Our younger families have been without Jr. Church and the Nursery since March. While they might have been able to connect online, it is not the same as connecting in community—as you all know. In addition, the children have not had the church experience that is critical to their overall faith development. Some who have served in the past are no longer able to serve because of recommendations from their doctor, so we need others who may not have helped before to consider stepping up.

Please consider helping with Jr. Church (ages K-4th Grade), Nursery (8wks to pre-K), Liturgist (read scripture in worship), Usher/Greeter, Audio Visual Opera-tors or Card Ministry. Sign up sheets are located on the table in the back as you come in or you can call the church office.

Delphos Trinity UMC has partnered with WDOH 107.1 FM radio to broadcast our worship service on Sunday mornings at 11:30 am for many years. Many people in the community listen to the program - shut-ins, people traveling, or those home sick and are grateful that this ministry exists. It is a way for them to feel connected to the church when they can't be physically present. Our radio spot costs $45 per week.

If you would like to sponsor a week, we will record a special recognition of your choosing for the week you sponsor. There is a sign-up chart with availa-ble dates on the table in the back as you enter the Family Life Center or you can call the church office 419/692-0651.

The following dates are available for sponsoring the Radio Ministry: Jan. 17, 24, 31; Feb 14, 21, 28; Mar. 21, 28; Apr. 4, 11, 18, 25; May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; June 6, 13, 27; July 4, 11, 18, 25; Aug. 1, 8, 22, 29; Sept. 12, 19, 26; Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31;l Nov 7, 14, 21, 28; Dec. 5, 12, 24 (Christmas Eve $150), 26.
