The Holiday Season is drawing near and while this is an ex-
citing, warm, family-filled time of the year, it’s also when we
send the most waste to the landfills. Albertans generate more
garbage per capita than anywhere else in Canada at nearly
1000kg per person per year with the national average coming
in at 700 kilos. After Christmas, the Edmonton Waste Manage-
ment Centre receives twice the amount of garbage as it does
in other months.
Christmas Trees - Live trees are the more sustainable choice. Although a fake tree should technically last year after year, research shows that they are discarded as they become less attractive after repeated use, often ending up in the landfill. Artificial trees use up resources during manufacture and transport and are made from the petroleum product, PVC. If you have an artificial tree you’d like to discard, it can be dropped off at the Reuse Centre free of charge so long as it’s in a box and all parts are included.
Live trees are generally locally grown and sold, contribute to air quality while they’re growing, and are recycled into mulch after the holiday season. Edmonton will pick up live trees for recycling starting on January 9, 2020. It’s really important to make sure all decorations and garland are removed before placing your unbagged tree next to your regular garbage for pick up. Trees will be picked up by the end of January, not necessarily on your scheduled garbage day. Also note that large trees should be cut into 2 m lengths.
Decorations - Choose quality decorations that will be able to be used year after year. Bring unwanted holiday decorations, bows and ribbons, and wreaths to the Reuse Centre. Strings of lights and other electronic items should be brought to your local eco station to be discarded.
Gifts - This is the area I really struggle with when trying to cre-ate a more sustainable Christmas. When I was little, Christmas was so special. While I absolutely loved spending time with family and the warm feelings that came along with this beau-tiful season, the presents were really important too! We did-n’t get gifts all year long like many kids do now; so Christmas was one of two times during the year we received new toys. I have family members and friends in the neighbourhood who would be more qualified to write this section that do things like giving experience-based gifts, talking to kids from a young age about the lack of importance of material items and the impact of new things on the environment. I will try to reduce
the number of gifts I buy my kids and will look for gently used items before buying new. In our family we also go through our toys in November, and send the ones that are still in good shape to the Salvation Army and other charities.
Gift Wrap - 540,000 tonnes of gift wrap, gift bags and tape are discarded in Canada each year after Christmas. Foil wrap, tape and ribbon are not recyclable, so try to use non-foil paper and minimal tape and ribbon. This will make the paper easy to reuse or recycle. Better yet, use fabric bags, a scarf, or some other creative way to wrap your gifts this year. You can even get a roll of brown postal packaging paper and some holiday rubber stamps and let the kids make the gift wrap this year!
Wishing you all the very best of the holiday season and a sustainable new year!

Our second event for the year was Fun Bingo on Friday, October 25. The evening was fun for the 6 players who attended. We played enough bingo games until every-one won a prize. The second last game led into the last game where both games were won by the same play-er. One player won 4 games. Congratulations to all the players who attended. Please mark your calendar for the next Fun Bingo on February 28. You might be a win-ner if you come to play. Hoping to see you at the Christmas Potluck on Friday, December 6 at 6:00 pm with the doors opening at 5:30 pm. Turkey, dressing, gravy and cranberry sauce will be provided. We are hoping that you will bring your appe-tite and if, you are over the age of 12, an item for the buffet table. The cost is $10 per adult, $5 for ages 12 – 18, $3 for ages 6 – 11, ages 5 and under are at no cost. Children under the age of 12 are encouraged to bring a Christmas drawing for a display—name and age on the back of the drawing. Entertainment will be at 7:00 pm. There will be door prizes with the lucky num-bers!! Bring your appetite and voices to take part in this festive season activity. If you can help with the Christmas Potluck, please phone Bev at 780-455-7072 or send a message to Donna at [email protected]. Junior and senior high students who need to “collect” volunteer hours for recognition, awards and scholarships, please consider this as an event. You will need to contact Bev or Donna for more details. A reference document will be provided for one or more hours.
If you would like to plan the 2020 events, please contact Bev or Donna. Our next meeting is on December 10 at 7:30pm at the hall. Please let Bev or Donna that you are planning to attend the meeting in case the meeting needs to be postponed for unforeseen circumstances.
