From the PastorWhat is YOUR favorite Christmas story? Is it The Gift of the Magi about the

impoverished couple who sell their most prized possessions to be able to give each other a Christmas gift? He sells his pocket watch to buy her combs for her beautiful hair; she cuts and sells her hair to be able to give him a watch fob? Is it The Grinch Stole Christmas? Dickens’ The Christmas Carol? Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Match Girl? Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales? Or maybe ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas?

Christmas is the one time of the year that we all tell stories. It is storytelling season! In songs, movies, poetry, books, and beautiful illustrations...I think part of the reason is that Christmas holds so many memories for all of us—along with our hopes for ourselves and our world. Light shining in the darkness, candles glowing on gathered faces in the long evenings.

But I believe the even deeper reason is that Christmas celebrates God becoming part of humanity and our humblest human realities. And that encourages us to look around at our lives and see the sacredness there that is so easy to miss. Unless they are totally commercial or superficial, Christmas stories shine a light (the light of Christ?) on our human capacity for generosity, hospitality and reconciliation across differences and enmity. Some of the best Christmas stories aren’t made up at all—they capture simple, real acts of unexpected kindness. They are times when God’s presence helps us bridge seemingly impossible divides to show us we can in fact live together as one.

This is the heart of THE Christmas story:

“For the wolf shall live with the lamb.” —Isaiah 11:7

“A light to…guide our feet into the way of peace.” —Luke 2:79b

“Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they will learn war any more.” —Micah 4:3b

Matthew 2:1-15: The pagan magi travel miles to find the devoutly Jewish couple and their infant king.

“He has brought down the powerful….and lifted up the lowly” —Luke 2:52

As I write this, news of terror attacks in Paris has just come in...another chapter in the 21st century story of shifting enemies and ancient hatreds. But as those who follow Christ, our story is always first and foremost how the light of Christ still shines on the darkness in our humble lives, and on the torturous twists of history. This isn’t just the Christmas story—it’s our own real story. We are part of it, and the world desperately needs us to live out the reconciliation God brings in Christ, in our own seemingly small and humble ways.

Peace on earth. Good will to all.

May it be so. Come, Lord Jesus.

Blessings to you this Advent and JOY! JOY! to you this Christmas!

—Pastor Kathy Hawks

Christmas Pageant is for all agesDec 20 at 11 a.m. worship

Always wanted to play Mary in the Christmas Pageant? Or maybe baa like a sheep, or even be the angel to announce Jesus’ birth? This is your year! Join us for our Impromptu Christmas Pageant—where anyone of any age can play the role they would like to play. You can even arrive at church ready in your costume!

Children will be exploring each character at Kids’ church in the weeks prior to the pageant. We will use our imaginations to explore what it might have felt like to be Mary, an angel, a wise person, and even a sheep. As the pageant draws near, kids can think about what they would like to be in the pageant. They can even work on their own costume at home and come dressed on the morning of the pageant. They can also wait until the moment the pageant begins and choose their character as the spirit moves.

Some parts will be rehearsed. Narrators will practice their scripts. Choirs will rehearse beautiful songs, and kids’ church will prepare their own musical offering. A few volunteers will be preparing a collection of costumes to use and some will make plans for helping characters get to the right place near the altar.

The beauty of this type of pageant is that everyone can participate. Some will participate with open ears and eyes, and some may participate with their entire body up on stage. Please join us in this celebration as we retell the story of Jesus’ birth!

Family Christmas Eve ServiceEspecially for childrenDec 24 at 4 p.m.

Once again, a children’s story provides a fresh window on the meaning of the Christ child.

This year’s story is The Sparkle Box...Sam is so excited about Christmas! He’s thinking about his Christmas list, anticipating holiday parties, and puzzling over one very mysterious gift — a sparkly box sitting on the mantel above the fireplace.

On Christmas morning, when Sam finally opens the Sparkle Box, he finds...come and find out! Every child will receive their own Sparkle Box to bring home, and families may discover a new Christmas tradition.

Lucia FestDec 13 at 5 p.m.

YOU are invited to join in the fun of an Our Redeemer’s tradition! Each year the youth of Our Redeemers bring the story of Sancta Lucia to life, and continue a treasured tradition.

This is a beloved tradition in Sweden and Our Redeemers is delighted to bring Lucia’s message of light and charity to the community with a traditional tåg (procession), music, food, dancing and costumes.

You’ll learn a little Swedish and have a great time bringing holiday cheer to our community.

The Giving Tree is HereThe Christmas tree in the narthex/lobby festooned with gift tags is an Our Redeemer’s tradition that features requested items by people involved in Mary’s Place Shelter for women and children, Compass Housing Alliance shelters, and our own Road to Housing program. You are invited to take a tag from the tree—each one represents a gift. After you select your tag, please pick up a set of instructions, then add your name to the sign-up sheet nearby.

The earliest deadline will be Sun Dec 14, with a rolling deadline closer to Christmas for certain gifts, like those for our Safe Parkers. Each tag will be marked with its charity-specific deadline. The gifts do not need to be wrapped, but it would be helpful if the tag was securely attached. Thank you!

Thank you and blessings to Paula Hlastala for coordinating this important Advent activity!

Beer & CarolsOn Tuesday, Dec 15, Pastor Gretchen is hosting our first annual Beer and Carols. Join us from 7–9 p.m. at the Hale’s Ale’s Brewery on Leary for singing, beverages and great spirits! This is a great event to share with your friends and family, so invite away! For more information, please contact Gretchen at [email protected].

Architect Selected for Vision Aligned Building ProjectIn November, the Vision Aligned Building (VAB) team met and came to a decision on the selection of an architecture, planning and design firm, after the thorough vetting process outlined in detail in last month’s edition of The Visitor. In early December, the team will be meeting with the principal architect and project designer of the selected firm, in order to exchange ideas, clarify expectations, and further hone the scope of their work on the upcoming project. Once a contract has been entered into with the selected firm, we will be introducing them at a special Congregational meeting early next year (look for more information on the date in the next edition of The Visitor). The VAB team is comprised of Mike Hlastala, Pastor Kathy Hawks, Jim Arnold, Andrew Brissette, Kirsten Malone, Guy Michaelson and Don Boelter, Parish Administrator.

If you have already returned a pledge card for our 2016 ministries and mission, thank you so much. When all of us take this opportunity to give, we move toward making a reality of the plans that God has inspired in us for changing lives, meeting concrete human needs and deepening community in the model of Christ.

If you intend to make a pledge and have not yet done so, you may return your confidential pledge card in the offering plate or to the church office, or simply email Parish Administrator Don Boelter the amount you would like to pledge weekly, monthly, or yearly.

More Pledges Received This Year Than Ever Before

10 The Visitor December 2015

Thank YouGreetings from Lutheran World Relief! Thank you for your generous gift of $795.42 in support of the people of Nepal following April’s devastating earthquake.

Your support means so much to people like Kamal Bahadur Gurung. It took years for Mr. Gurung to build a house for his family in the Lamjung district, but only mere moments for his house to be destroyed by the earthquake. Thankfully he, his wife, children and mother are all safe. Now the family faces the long journey to recovery.

Because of your compassionate gift, they won’t have to face that journey alone. LWR has made a commitment to a long-term response to the earthquake that will help families repair their homes, rebuild their livelihoods and better prepare them to face future disasters. Your gift not only makes this long-term work possible, it sends a powerful message of God’s love to the people of Nepal.

Please keep in touch so we can show you your gift in action! You can visit our website (lwr.org) or our blog (blog.lwr.org) for pictures and updates. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or any of LWR’s staff at 800.597.5972 or [email protected].

On behalf of LWR, our partners, and especially those we are serving together in Nepal, please accept my thanks once more for your gift. God bless you!

With Gratitude,

Daniel V. Speckhard President and CEO, Lutheran World Relief

Thanks to Our Redeemer’s youth for inspiring our generosity.

Celebrate Allison Sutton's MinistrySunday, Jan 3

Although she is not leaving the congregation, Jan 3rd will be Allison’s last day as a member of Our Redeemer’s staff. Our lives have been greatly enriched by Allison’s ministry and presence among us; she is a bastion of energy, spirit, organization, and zeal for life! God’s blessings on Allison’s discernment and future endeavors.

In words from her letter:

I am full of gratitude for the time I have shared at Our Redeemer’s. I have so appreciated this community, the theology, the mission, and, of course, the amazing people that make these things come alive. Our community has inspired me with its spectacular vision full of radical love, challenged me with its heart for social justice, and comforted me with a soul that intrinsically knows how to care for people.

The children, youth, families, and young adults here are a true gift to the world. God has created an incredible bunch with abounding gifts, and they have responded to the call to be the light of the world with a resounding, “YES!” Thank you for inviting me into your worlds, for sharing your laughter, for forgiving me when I’ve failed, and for showing me what God’s love looks like.

Because of my respect, love, and appreciation for this place, I would very much like to remain a member of this congregation and support this transition as best I can. Please let me know how I can be most helpful during this time—even if it means stepping away for some time to allow a new person to settle into this life-giving ministry. My last Sunday will be Jan 3, 2016.

A celebration of her work at Our Redeemer’s will be held between services on Jan 3. Please contact Pastor Gretchen if you would like to help organize!

DEEPENING COMMUNITY

Everybody Place Lunch ReturnsFourth Wed of every month, starting Jan 27 at 12:30 p.m.

Do you feel disconnected between the different worship services, or because you have been gone for a while, or because life has changed? Everybody Place Lunch is a chance for us to connect, and reconnect!

Recently, a group of great folks got together to see if there was energy to reinvigorate the Everybody Place Lunch at Our Redeemer’s. The answer was a a resounding YES! We talked quite a bit about what it would be like to get to know new members, or friends of friends, or folks that have been away for a while. What a gift to gather around a meal!

After much discussion, we have decided to give having a regular potluck rotation a go. Dinah Coble has graciously agreed to organize “potluck sharing.” Two or three groups will take turns bringing food, and cleaning up. There is no pressure to make something fancy, unless that’s something that brings you joy. (Going to the deli counter at Fred Meyer is what brings me joy! Ha!) If you would like to participate in the rotation, please email Dinah at [email protected].

We also talked about ride sharing, and making sure that people can physically get to church to participate. If you would like to ride share, please let me know at [email protected].

I am so very grateful to be part of a community that cares for each other, and wants to be connected. Also, be assured that I am working on my collection of jokes to share with you!
