New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday cleared sale of four Sahara prop- erties in India - Vasai, Jodhpur, Pune and Chauma in Gurgaon - to help raise funds to secure bail for the group's chair- man, but sought details on its deal to raise $650 mil- lion by mortgaging three hotels abroad. The Sahara Group needs to deposit Rs 5,000 crore in cash and another Rs 5,000 crore by way of a bank guarantee as a con- dition to releasing Subrata Roy and two directors, who have been in jail since March 4, 2014. A bench comprising Justices TS Thakur, Anil R Dave and AK Sikri, cleared sale of domestic properties for Rs 2,696 crore, after hearing argu- ments from Sahara and Sebi. Sahara handed over Rs 184.50 crore received as down payment for the properties to Sebi. The rest of the amount was secured by post-dated cheques with undertak- ings from the buyers to court that they would be honoured. These payments will be due by May 2014 and the proceeds minus transac- tion costs and other taxes will be paid to Sebi. This is the first time the Supreme Court will have a dedicated bench to hear cases pertaining to public interest and all fresh PILs may be heard by the new bench from now. Currently, such cases are scattered over different benches. Notifying the constitution of a two-judge bench on Wednesday, the CJI, through an official note, expressed concern over pendency of several cases in the Supreme Court without a proper hearing. Cases that relate to prob- lems in society and those which have a direct impact on the rights of the people are the areas where the constitutional mechanism has to play a proactive role so as to meet the goals of the Constitution, according to the note. “Honb’le the Chief Justice of India is of the view that these cases shall be given a specialised approach for their early disposal so that the masses will realise the fruits of the rights provided to them by the constitu- tional text,” stated the note, adding the CJI’s order aimed at securing social justice — one of the ideals of the Constitution. Secretary General VSR Avadhani told The Indian Express that the CJI has directed that the Social Justice Bench would start functioning from December 12. The new bench will devise a procedure to expedi- tiously deal with the issues and would continue to sit on every working Friday at 2 pm to monitor the imple- mentation of its directions to authorities concerned. Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Uday U Lalit would comprise the bench, which will hear not only the pending cases but also all the fresh mat- ters on . Mahendra SinghThe government has accepted a proposal toban the sale of loose cigarettes andincrease the minimum age from 18 to 21 forthe sale of tobacco products. Such type ofinitiative will deter children from taking upsmoking. Earlier the government had issueddirectives to ban smoking in public places.RSS will say, “Ek cigarette peena gareebidarshata hai, poora packet kharidna hamariSanskratik mahanata ka dyotak hai”. Whenwe were young, artists with improvised longlegs used to lure the youth by dispensingcigarettes free. If I remember correctly, thebrand used to be “Passing show”. We usedto follow them for some distance for havingfun.Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in favour ofprivatization of railway stations where hotelsand restaurants will be constructed. Howgood. I will then head towards the stationnot for catching a punctually running trainbut to stay in the hotel and have food. Modiwill ask me to proceed and say, “I will trans-
fer the money in “ Jan dhan yojana”account. This scheme should be trans-formed in to Shram Dhan Yojana”. employment mustbe the priorities of the
government. For achieving this, we willneed to work silently with dedication andrefrain from wearing a fancy jacket with aflower and speaking endlessly. Germanstalk less and work more. Youth who want tolearn this language should be allowed to doso.Few years back, Samajwadi Party leaderMulayam Singh used to lay emphasis on theusage of Hindi language but he had sent his
Akhilesh Yadav to Australia for pursuinghis studies. Friends, we have no time towaste and get our attention diverted by
selfish and power seeking politicians. Academicians, the Editors, members of thecivil society, college principals should set
the right path for our students to fol-low. Students are intelligent and
they are capable of taking rightdecisions. They will also seek parental
guidance. These days the sit-uation has become suchthat the Supreme Courtneeds to intervene in allmatters. It’s an alarming sit-uation and we must strive
to correct it.

Bhadralok's 'shock' at Mamata is sexist, classist
Nijera 34 bochhor khomotaichhilo. Kichhu korteypaareni. Aar jaara korchheytaader bamboo diyeberachhe. (They were inpower for 34 years andcould do nothing. And theyare shoving the bamboo(up the rear ends) of thosewho are doing something.)Bengali bhadralok areaghast. For years theymerely turned its nose up atMamata because of herunpolished rough and tum-ble street-tough ways, butthey tolerated her in a waythey would not have tolerat-ed a man from her classbackground. Now, to them,it looks like Didi is showingher class. The Telegraph
pasted a bamboo curtain onits front page with a bannerheadline saying BAMBOOREPUBLIC – No word istoo crude, no gesticulationtoo loud. And the copysmirks “Readers who insiston their right to know mayturn to Page 8 – only if youmust and you are agedabove18.”The bhadralok doth protesttoo much. Didi’s languagewas slangy, earthy and inbad taste but hardly X-rated. School students rou-tinely say the algebraexamination was a “totalbaansh”. In the lexicon ofinsults most of which relateto vile acts being perpetrat-ed on mothers and sisters, bamboo is hardly settingthe Hooghly on fire.Should a politician, espe-cially a chief minister, watchher mouth? Absolutely. Nomatter if she curses up ablue streak in private, should she maintain a cer-tain decorum in public? 100percent.

Donors urged to pledge support
id agenciesworking inAfghanistan are
urging the internationalcommunity to make long-term financial commitmentsor risk seeing the countrycollapse. The conferencecomes after a recentincrease in attacks by theTaliban. President AshrafGhani, who took power inSeptember, has vowed tobring peace after decadesof conflict. He is expectedto use the conference toseek endorsement for hisplan for a "transformationdecade" from 2015-24, andguarantees that troop with-drawals will not be quicklyfollowed by cuts in financialaid. "As Afghanistan has acommitment to introducereforms, it will tell the inter-
national community, in par-ticular, donors at the meet-ing, that this is our agendafor reform and based on it,they should assist and sup-port us," PresidentialSpokesman NazifollahSalarzai told Afghan TV.BBC diplomatic correspon-dent James Robbins saysthe meeting will encouragethe new Afghan govern-ment to do far more thanformer President HamidKarzai to tackle corruption, improve the country's secu-rity forces and demonstratethat no-one is above thelaw. For all the expressionsof goodwill President Ghanican expect to hear today,he also knows that he hasto rebuild trust betweenAfghanistan and its interna-tional partners. The view
here in Kabul seems to bethat he has made a goodstart but there is disap-pointment that he andAbdullah Abdullah - the defacto Prime Minister - havestill not agreed on the makeup of the cabinet.Appointing ministers to thekey security portfolios isconsidered to be particular-ly urgent in the hope ofimproving co-ordinationbetween the police and theAfghan army. For Afghans, creating jobs will clearly beone of the measurablesigns that dysfunctionalgovernment is on thewane. But what could reallymake the difference to peo-ple's hard-pressed liveshere is whether PresidentGhani's hopes for reconcili-ation and, ultimately, peacecan succeed where thepast efforts have failed. lineMeanwhile, a coalition ofBritish and Irish charitieswill warn the conferencethat a combination of cutsin their international fund-ing and growing securityfears among their staffthreatens to reverse theprogress that has beenmade.
