The College of Media is proud to be the home of Illinois Public Media, and all of us in the college consider ourselves fortunate to have such an important partner that serves our community. The connection is unique, and one that benefits the college both on campus and beyond.

The professional journalists, technicians and producers at IPM are, in essence, an extension of our faculty, bringing the academic mission of the college inside the walls of Campbell Hall. Whether involved in news or community engagement, these professionals teach students through hands-on experiences that build on classroom learning. Student interns have been able to propose story ideas for the news department, edit radio interviews for the website, use social media to promote content and develop public service announcements.

Our students are encouraged to work on real-world projects—to cover stories happening right now, stories that affect the lives of thousands of residents across central Illinois. A number of these reports have been shared with the public through CU-CitizenAccess.org and Illinois Public Media.

At the same time, student stories aren’t limited to the issues and events happening in central Illinois. Illinois Public Media has also aired the documentaries produced by professor Nancy Benson’s students during their international reporting classes in Turkey, China, Romania, Italy and Peru. And Illinois Public Media was an important partner for professor Jay Rosenstein’s award-winning documentary, The Lord Is Not On Trial Here Today.

This election year offered up some interesting opportunities at Illinois Public Media for students. They were involved with editing and transcribing pre-election interviews and assisted with election night coverage as well. Students used social media techniques to cover the 2012 general election in a non-traditional way.

With your support of Illinois Public Media, you are also supporting the education of College of Media students. We cannot thank you enough and will continue to do our best to bring you stories that affect your lives.

In this special season of song and celebra-tion, turn to WILL-TV for specials featuring not only holiday music, but everything from pop and blues to rock, classical and opera.

At 6:30 pm Sunday, Dec. 2, The Tenors: Lead with Your Heart features Victor Mi-callef, Clifton Murray, Remigio Pereira and Fraser Walters performing music from their newly released album in a concert from Las Vegas’ Smith Center.

Then, while on tour in November 1981, The Rolling Stones dropped in to Muddy Waters’ Checkerboard Lounge in Chicago to catch a performance by the legendary bluesman. Soon the group was on stage jamming with Waters, Buddy Guy and Lefty Dizz—a unique occasion captured on film as Muddy Waters & The Roll-ing Stones Live, which airs at 8 pm Thursday, Dec. 6.

At 8 pm Thursday, Dec. 13, Live from Lincoln Center presents The Richard Tucker Opera Gala, fea-turing the Tucker Foun-dation’s 2012 award winner joined by opera luminaries and mem-bers of the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Choral Society.

Fulfilling musical gift wishes

And get the behind-the-scenes story of the making of The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour, the least known of the various films starring the iconic group. Never theatrically re-leased or nationally broadcast on U.S. tele-vision, the 1967 film received only sporadic TV syndication in the 1980s. Now Great Performances presents The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour Revisited at 8 pm Friday, Dec. 14, packed with unseen footage and contri-butions from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Martin Scorsese, Peter Fonda and Terry Gilliam, among others, plus special context for the era. The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour film follows at 9 pm.

At 8 pm Friday, Dec. 21, Grammy Award-winning baritone and University of Il-linois School of Music professor Nathan Gunn and actress Jane Seymour are the featured performers in Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

In working with choir director Mack Wil-berg to prepare the program, Gunn said they were in agreement that the music should be an even mix of “classical” and “standard.”

“That’s why we performed In dulci jubilo, Mighty Lord and King All Glorious from the Bach Christmas Oratorio, Sing Lullaby, Silent Night and Angels, From the Realms of Glory in addition to White Christ-mas, Winter Wonderland and Let It Snow. I also ham it up a bit while singing Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

“The combined choir and orchestra are the largest musical body I’ve worked with, plus the largest audience for that kind of stage,” Gunn said. “I want to remind WILL-TV viewers to look at how happy all the performers are while playing, singing and dancing, and to take note of the choir’s incredibly good diction.”

Gunn was “very impressed” at how well organized the rehearsals were—espe-cially since the orchestra, the choir, the dancers and the stage help are all volunteers. “Everyone was thoroughly prepared and very welcoming,” he con-tinued. “I love the Christmas season and to be able to begin it last year with that concert made me very happy.”

Holiday specials all month long

As part of The Evening Concert in December, WILL-FM is presenting special programs that highlight the season’s celebrations.

At 7 pm Monday, Dec. 10, the NPR favorite Hanukkah Lights features Hanukkah stories and memoirs written by acclaimed authors expressly for the show and read by NPR’s Susan Stamberg and Murray Horwitz. It’s followed at 8 pm by Chanukah in Story and Song with The Western Wind performing songs of Spanish Jews, Yiddish melodies of Eastern Europe and modern Israeli tunes.

Then at 9 pm Friday, Dec. 21, it’s a new Paul Winter Solstice Concert from New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine, featuring gospel singer Theresa Thomason, Mbira master Chris Berry and the Paul Winter Consort with a variety of singers and the cathedral’s pipe organ.

At 7 pm Saturday, Dec. 22, A Christmas Celtic Sojourn features harpist Catriona McKay, fiddlers Chris Stout and Winifred Horan, and cellist Natalie Haas. Singers include Chieftains vocalist Alyth McCormick from Scotland, the four-part

harmonies of Navan and the vocals of Mick McAuley and Eamonn McElholm.

Beginning at 8 pm Monday, Dec. 31, NPR’s Toast of the Nation takes you from coast to coast with four celebrations of midnight in different time zones. The party continues until 4 am.

Holiday specials with Curious George and The Cat in the HatGeorge and The Man with The Yellow Hat are puzzled about what to give each other for a Christmas gift. The Man is having trouble reading George’s wish list and George doesn’t have a clue about what to get for The Man who has everything. Will they be able to find the answers before Christmas morning? Find out when Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas airs at 7 pm Sunday, Dec. 16.

Then in a new special, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About Christmas (7 pm Sunday, Dec. 23), the Cat in the Hat, Nick and Sally help a lost reindeer find his way home to Freezeyourknees Snowland in time for Christmas. On the way, the Thingamajigger breaks down and they must depend on a variety of animals—and their remarkable abilities—to help them make an amazing journey home.

Celebrating a musical legendAn all-star celebration of the life and work of composer Marvin Hamlisch is the focus of the New York Philharmonic’s New Year’s Eve from Live at Lincoln Center at 7 pm Monday, Dec. 31. Hamlisch, who died in August, won three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globe awards in addition to receiving the Pulitzer Prize for A Chorus Line.

We’ve been making changes over the past few months to strengthen our radio schedule. When looking for a companion weekday program for WILL-AM’s Focus, we elected to move Fresh Air to 11 am. This created a balanced block of news and informational programs, and allowed us to air Fresh Air live. In the past we’ve received numerous audience requests for us to air NPR’s Talk of the Nation. By moving Fresh Air, we were able to add Talk of the Nation to our schedule at 1 pm weekdays. We recently added State of the Re:Union (see accompanying article) at 1 pm Sundays. Radio Programming 101By Bob Culkeen, WILL Station Manager

Part of my job as station manager is making sure that we’re continually evaluating our radio schedule with the goal of delivering the finest available programs to our listeners.

We look at program offers, audience suggestions and support, program performance, value, diversity and balance, staff input, program cost and our budget.

We’re fortunate to be able to choose from offerings of National Public Radio, Public Radio International, American Public Media, the British Broadcasting Corporation, independent sources and other public radio stations, as well as our WILL-produced programs. I, along with other staff members, listen to the programs, research information about the potential audience and analyze other aspects of the programs to make our decisions. In some cases, rather than airing a complete national series, we select individual, premium programs to make up a series that we program ourselves, such as The Evening Concert on WILL-FM, made

Gifts for all seasonsAt WILL, we tend to think primarily of membership gifts. The average single gift to WILL is a little more than $100. That number has remained stable for several years. We’re grateful for nearly 13,000 Friends of WILL whose gifts of all sizes keep our operating budget humming. Private support (from individuals and businesses, primarily from individuals) makes up more than 40 percent of our budget each year.

Have you ever wondered, apart from your annual gift, what you can do for WILL? You might consider a gift of appreciated stock. Making a gift of stock you’ve owned for some time—that has increased in value—would translate into capital gains tax liability if sold. But, stock can make a very effective gift to a non-profit organization like WILL. From a tax planning standpoint, it may in fact be better to give appreciated securities rather than make gifts of cash. If you give stock directly to a nonprofit like WILL/Illinois Public Media, the organization receives the full market value of the gift—no capital gains tax is assessed. Such a gift may allow you to make a donation bigger than you may have considered possible.

State of the Re:Union joins AM scheduleThe current narrative of our nation, says Al Letson, is that things are falling apart. And yet, when you zoom in close, you see that everyday people are doing extraordinary work to help each other, to engage their community and to overcome obstacles.

That’s what State of the Re:Union, produced by Letson and airing at 1 pm Sundays on WILL-AM 580, is all about—telling those stories about the dreamers and doers in cities and towns across America.

State of the Re:Union was created by Letson as an entry in the Public Radio Talent Quest, which aimed to identify a new generation of public radio on-air talent. The show was one of two winners awarded start-up funding, and Letson has produced four seasons of programs that look at how a particular American city or town creates community, the ways people transcend challenging circumstances and the vital cultural narratives that give an area its uniqueness.

FM side of the dial, we moved Live and Local to 4 pm, which created a block of related programs. Before this move, the FM format shifted from talk to music throughout the day.

All the recipes will be compiled into a cookbook that will be a thank-you gift for supporting WILL during the March TV membership drive.
