GOOD NEWS

There’s a lot that we do know when it comes to Trinity at City Beach and its owner Justin Dick. For instance, unmatched lakeside dining, prime location poised at the entrance to City Beach, great food, excellent service, extensive wine list and full bar just to name a few. But here’s something you may not know, Trinity and its owner Justin Dick have been quietly making a significant impact in this community at about every level imaginable for years. Whether it be children locally or across the country by supporting organizations like Kinderhaven, which provides in-crisis sup-port to children, or Team Laughing Dog and its race across the country raising money for autism, or holding events such as “Yappy Hour” which supports the local Panhandle Animal Shelter, Trinity and owner Justin Dick together have made an impactful difference. “This is home,” says owner Justin Dick, who relocated to Sandpoint permanently in 2007 after a decade of visiting family in the area. He has spent as much revamping the restaurant as he has redefining the community. Children and educational causes are near and dear to his heart, says Justin, the father of 3-year-old Jace with wife, Shaunavee. “I was fortunate to grow up in a family that had a good sense of giving back,” says Justin of his parents, who started the original Cafe’ Trinity on First Avenue. Justin notes how Trinity at City Beach’s involvement in charitable causes like the Wishing Star Foundation Breakfast has gal-vanized his staff, whom he describes as family. “They will encourage me to spend time with my family,” he says “and I know that translates to how they treat our guests.” In only a few years, Justin has not only built a fantastic dining experience in the heart of Sandpoint but he has also man-aged to engage the community and his customers at a level that truly means something. “The exciting part of Trinity at City Beach,” says Justin, “is that there’s always more we can do.”

The Madness is BackWritten by Brooke Obaitek, Staff Writer

FROM THE SHS CEDAR POST

The annual Moose Madness competition between Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry is coming up fast. With the competi-

tion being only a month away, students need to remember that Sandpoint has yet to beat Bonners. What will it take to become the champions of this spirit competition?

Sportsmanship is the key. Within all the activities such as cheer, dance, band, choir and the basketball game, there needs to be sportsmanship shown by the fans and competitors, especially because it’s worth 20 percent of the scoring rubric.

Student involvement is also a huge factor. Sandpoint is a big-ger school than Bonners, so if a lot of our students are involved in the stomp routine, the moose call, the moose painting, and most importantly, the fundraising, then we will have the advan-tage.

Fundraising is the biggest aspect of the competition. Bonners Ferry has less students than Sandpoint, meaning they don’t have to raise as much money. Yet they have beaten Sandpoint in this category every year. Not only will an increase in fundrais-ing help us gain more points for Moose Madness, all the money earned will stay within our community.

Moose Madness will be held in the Sandpoint High School gym on December 16th. Come join the fun!

Christmas!Merry

Let’s Not Forget! No matter how much society tries

to change the meaning of Christ-mas, lets remember the true reason why we as a nation celebrate this time of year.

Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December and commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. The word Christmas is derived from the Old English word “Cristes maesse” which literally translates to Christ’s Mass. Although no one knows for sure the exact date of Christ’s birth, the date chosen to celebrate it is related to the Roman Saturnalia festival that lasted from the 17th-21st of Decem-ber. This date was chosen some-where during the 4th century AD by the heads of the church and the following is how Christmas evolved.

Christmas and Gift GivingGift-giving, likened the activity to that of the Magi, who gave gifts to baby Jesus, in this regard it became symbolic and necessary to the grand tradition of Christmas.

Christmas and Santa ClausThe character of Santa Claus is said to be inspired by Saint Nicholas of Myra, a bishop, who went around giving the poor children of his village gifts. The legend of Santa centres around the North Pole and his magical workshop of elves. Every year he makes presents for those children who were nice. Those who were naughty received nothing but a lump of coal. The figure of Santa has become inseparable from the tradition of Christmas on a whole.

Christmas and CarolsAnother important part of the Christmas celebrations are the sing-ing of carols. These have their origins in the past well before the concept of Christmas carols was actualized. Most of the popular carols we now sing were written in the 19th century and were sung from house to house near the Christmas season. Soon the church adopted this tradition in the 1820’s, giving these songs a greater sense of reverence.

LOCAL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

December 2011 SANDPOINT NEWSLINE 16

Brothers Rick and Randy Evans relocated their young families to Sandpoint just a few years ago, each with the objective of planting roots in ‘an amazing outdoor-oriented community that is all about family and friends’. Living in the same town for the first time since high

school, Rick finally convinced Randy (self-proclaimed coffee geek) to pursue his long time dream of starting his own cof-fee roasting business.

Evans Brothers Coffee was the result of many hours of brainstorming on Schweitzer’s Chair 6 during the brothers’ first winter in town. They set a goal to positively impact communities locally, and in the global communities from

which their beans would be sourced. Randy wanted to introduce the world’s finest coffees while connecting people to the stories behind the farmers, and the incred-ible journey coffee takes from ‘seed to cup’. Rick’s pas-sion also lay in connecting with people, with a goal of

building a long-lasting business that Sandpoint would be proud to call its own.

EBC has been true to their mission, hosting Neighbor-hood Tastings and successful fundraising events for area non-profits, donating coffee for large events like The Festival and Scenic Half, and leading by example in collaborating with other businesses towards mutual success.

Evans Brothers Coffee has quickly become a favorite Sandpoint business with many loyal customers. They have led a revitalization of the granary district, andhave expanded from the original Roasting Studio at 524 Church, by add-ing the Neighbor-hood Espresso Bar, and now Studio 524 Coffee Lounge. The Studio is a collabo-ration with pho-tographer Woods Wheatcroft and Al-tered Eco Designs, with an opening event scheduled for December 10th, 10am-1pm.
